Winemaker Description 

These ancient, own-rooted País vines are 800 meters from the Bío Bío river in a dry river bed that used to hold the river. The soil is especially unique with an alluvial top-layer over black, sandy (basaltic) soils.

This is “País Franco”—as in piè franco—meaning the vine is ungrafted like most of Henriquez’s vines, but the name also draws attention to how this cuvée is one of the most honest, pure and frank versions of the variety available.

Monica Larner writes;  The 2018 Maremma Toscana Ornello is a blend of Sangioveto (Sangiovese), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from the design winery of Rocca di Frassinello on the Tuscan Coast. This wine pays homage to the "butteri," or cowboys, that roam this remote and hilly terrain with their sturdy horses and leather hats. Decanter, 93 Points, 2021: A wonderfully classic expression of Napa Cabernet from Rombauer in 2021, leading with blackberry, cherry, liquorice, graphite, and cedarwood. Medium-bodied with pure blackberry fruit, baking spices, creme de cassis, and red currants with a long lingering finish. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 4% Cab Franc aged 16 months in French oak (75% new). Koerner Rombauer moved to Napa Valley in 1972. He had no intentions of getting into the winery business and became a partner in Conn Creek Winery in 1976, but had his garage bonded as a winery. Officially bitten by the wine bug, Kerner sold his interests in Conn Creek in 1980, made the first Rombauer wines at Shafer, and stored them in his bonded winery garage. A little side note: Koerner's great aunt Irma Rombauer wrote 'The Joy of Cooking'.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 91 Points, 2021: Almost entirely estate grown, Rombauer's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon does include a bit of purchased fruit from Blair (Calistoga) and Renteria 360 (Oakville). Marked by scents of cherries, cedar and dusty earth, this wine is full-bodied, supple and silky, with softly dusty tannins on the finish.

The color is intense and beautiful, almost black with purple, reddish hues. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, piecrust, spice, and mint mingle and leap from the glass. The palate is full and concentrated with similar aromas but also featuring black currant and sweet red cherry with the mild presence of oak, seamlessly integrated. Signature finely structured tannins and balanced acidity give way to a long finish which continues to build after that last sip.
