This vintage of our Malbec Clásico is fully representative of Altos Las Hormigas style, as the joyful and fresh expression of Mendoza Malbec. Displaying a bright ruby red color, this wine has a fruity nose of plums and raspberries complemented with herbal notes. 

The first palate shows supple tannins with a balanced acidity that is the secret of its freshness. Notes of crisp red fruits fill the mouth, with a soft texture and a long finish. This is a pleasant wine, ideal to pair with various dishes, from red meats to pasta or grilled vegetables.

Joaquin Hidalgo writes:  The 2021 Malbec Clásico Made with Organic Grapes is 75% from Luján de Cuyo and 25% from the Uco Valley. A mild purple color. The bold aromas feature plum and notes of spice, herbs and mint. On the palate, it has good grip and acidity with a degree of structure and moderate fat. Winemaker Notes

Catena Malbec presents a deep violet color with purple reflections. This microclimate blend of four unique vineyards offers intense aromas, soft texture, and concentrated flavor. Deep aromas of ripe red and dark fruits are joined by delicate violet and lavender notes, with traces of vanilla and mocha.

A rich, concentrated mouthfeel is highlighted by flavors of blueberries and blackberries with a touch of leather and cinnamon. The wine has well-integrated tannins, bright acidity, and a flinty minerality that provides exceptional length to the finish.

Pair with roast turkey, grilled steak, salmon, and pasta.

Wine Advocate 92 Points:  The 2021 Q Malbec comes from Altamira and Chacayes and was made with a significant part of full clusters (especially Altamira) and aged mostly in concrete to keep that sense of purity. It has notes of some blue fruit, aromatic herbs and a citrus twist, reminiscent of green tea. It is floral, expressive, perfumed and fine-boned, with a medium-bodied palate where the tannins are fine and there's some grip. 500,000 bottles produced. 92+James Suckling 93 Points:  A spicy malbec with a touch of fine herbs, oyster sauce and dark minerals to the fresh blueberries. A very fresh and nicely chewy expression of malbec with a medium to full body on the palate. Tannins are tight, fresh and grained. Mostly from Paraje Altamira and Los Chacayes. Try in 2025.

Wine & Spirits Magazine 93 Points:  A selection from vineyards in Vista Flores and La Consulta, this wine is fun and zesty, focusing on malbec’s fresher side with wild blueberry flavors and violet scents. The snappy herbal pop in the tannins suggest vertically-integrated complexity, from purposeful harvest to Zuccardi’s light-handed vinification.

Bright red color with intense violet hues. Fresh nose of violets and rich plum marmalade laced with chocolate and vanilla oak flavors. A soft, sweet entry leads to a well-structured and long, persistent wine. Round, silky tannins.

This hand harvested, 100% Malbec wine is from multiple vineyards in the Uco Valley. The wine predominantly shows notes of coffee, blueberry, and chocolate with secondary notes of licorice, black cherry, cinnamon, baking spices, and sage.

The complexity of the wine extends into the palate by being big and bold without being flabby, with smooth tannins and light acidity. The wine finishes extremely strong with plum, cassis, doughnut cake, and fine silky tannins. A wine that out delivers it’s price by tenfold!

A young profile wine, it has a fresh style with violet floral aromas and flavors of plum, cherries, dried berries, and an aftertaste of white pepper-corns. Ideal to consume now for its robust and untameable vitality.

James Suckling 91 Points | Blackberries and blueberries on the nose, followed by a spicy undertone and some cocoa powder. A very subtle, gamy edge, too. Medium to full body with lots of dusty tannins on the palate, following through to a long finish. Some cocoa powder at the end.

Dorothy & Bernie of 67Wine.com | We visited the Mendel winery on one of our first visits to Mendoza about 18 years ago.  The winery was introduced to us by our friend Paulo Costa, who was then President of Novartis Pharmaceuticals.  Mendel Winery was started by a well known Buenos Aires pharmaceutical family with Roberto de la Mota, known as one of Argentina’s greatest wine makers. The Mendels began the winery with the intent of making great wines that were more refined than what was found in Mendoza.  We fell in love with their Cabernet which was powerful, yet not overwhelming.  We still find it one of the best, most accessible and harmonious Cabernets made in Mendoza.   Dorothy & Bernie “Follow the Drinker”

James Suckling 92 Points | Aromas of currants, sweet tobacco and oyster shell follow through to a medium to full body with firm, creamy tannins and a steely finish. Drink after 2021.

The Barda Pinot is a sensational value high-end Pinot Noir for lovers of pretty, fine-boned styles rather than the rich, mulchy examples.

Cranberry, pomegranate and other red fruits dominate the buoyant nose. It is pine needle fresh, alpine in feel, with a flowing and gentle fruit-sweet core, and shows a savoury, dusty edge to the finish.

The fruit for the Barda Pinot is sourced from Bodega Chacra's younger vineyard, planted in 1990 from cuttings from their ungrafted original vineyards from 1932 and 1955. It is a wine of heritage, and pure class.

About Bodega Chacra

Bodega Chacra is located in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia, in the dead centre of Argentina.

Founded in 2003 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta - the grandson of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, creator of Sassacaia, one of the monuments of Italian wine. After trying a Patagonian Pinot at a tasting in NYC, Piero began searching for site in the Rio Negro region, a search that bore fruit in the Mainque area. He took over a site with ungrafted vines dating back to 1932, and the development of a world class winery too shape, with a focus on organic and biodynamic viticulture.

He brought legendary Meursault producer Jean-Marc Roulot on board to aid in the planting and vinification of Chardonnay - not a bad advisor! Piero's dedication to producing outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay was rewarded when Chacra Treinta y Dos Pinot 2018 was named Best Wine in the World by James Suckling.

Joaquin Hidalgo of Vinous writes 93 Points | The 2021 Monastrell hails from Los Chacayes in the Uco Valley and was all fermented in whole bunches before spending six months in concrete eggs. Garnet-red in hue. The nose presents aromas ranging from chocolate to dried flowers and watermelon to herbs. The palate is dry and grippy. Well-balanced acidity complements the vibrant tannins, resulting in a lean, compact mouthfeel. The 2021 is a long-lasting red for aficionados.  Drinking 2023 to 2031.

Ver Sacrum (Sacred Spring) GSM is from the Uco Valley about 2 hours drive from Mendoza into the higher mountains.  GSM is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre or Garnacha, Syrah and Monastrell whether you use French or Spanish names for the grapes.   The blend produces a wine that is leaner and "Rhone like”  very different from the Malbecs produced in Argentina.

70% Grenache Noir, 15% Syrah, 15% Monastrell co-fermented. A cool, semi-carbonic maceration lasts 8 days. Fermentation in a 3,000-litre raw-concrete egg-shaped fermenter with no skin contact. Ambient yeasts only. 50% of the wine is aged here on its lees, the other 50% is aged in third-use French oak for 6 months. 8 months in bottle before release.

The Catena Chardonnay combines the unique expressions of three high altitude vineyard sites. The wine shows an intense greenish color with yellow notes. The extraordinary combination of these vineyards offer honey and tropical fruit flavors while lending notes of citrus, pears, peaches, and white flowers with a strong minerality and a delicated note of vanilla. The mouthfeel is clean, with a fresh, clean acidity.

James Suckling 93 Points | This almost-Bordeaux-style blend includes 72% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc, 5% malbec and 2% syrah. It offers deep, dark black cherries, blueberries, umami and subtle savory notes on a mouth-filling, moderately tannic texture. Great structure comes with a lively through-line of acidity. It’s hearty and sophisticated at the same time.

Eduardo Soler started Ver Sacrum in 2012 after spending some time in the Gredos, in Madrid, and falling in love with the mountain Garnacha. An avid mountaineer who has had a career managing and running ski resorts in Argentina, he decided to start making wines, all from Rhone varietals. His idea is to make fresh ones, with lower alcohol (12.8 percent) and lighter skin contact, not exactly what Argentina has been known for. 

His wines ferment from native yeasts and there are no corrections, no filtration, or pump overs. The winery currently sources from two different vineyards in Barrancas (Maipu) and Los Chacayes (Uco Valley) where they have  planted Grenache, Monastrell, Carignan, Roussane, Marsanne, Mencia, Syrah, Teroldego, and Nebbiolo.  

100% hand harvested Grenache Noir from a single vineyard in the Los Chacayes IG within the Uco Valley.  Grapes are 25% whole cluster and undergo semi carbonic maceration for 14 days and fermentation in concrete eggs. Aged 50% in concrete eggs.

This wine has a dark, intense color, with hints of violet. The nose reveals a complex mix of aromas including raspberry, black pepper, violets, cloves and subtle notes of dark chocolate. On the palate the wine is well-balanced with a refreshing acidity and ripe tannins that contribute to the harmony and smoothness of the palate.

98 Points Decanter | Fresh berries such as blackcurrant, violets, balsamic notes and tobacco combine in the nose. On the palate, it’s harmonious and refined, showcasing good freshness and extremely subtle, fine tannins. The cool summer of 2019 made this vintage one of the best in decades. Caro 2019 is one of the finest incarnations of this Bordeaux-inspired wine, a blend of 64% Malbec with 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in barrels for 18 months. Boasts significant ageing potential; at least 10 years.

95 Points James Suckling | Chocolatey, cedary oak with truffles and tobacco here. While there is a lot of oak to flatter at this stage, it still delivers restraint, bearing and class. Keep smelling and you'll find scented, dark lead pencil, meaty spices, fine blackberries and a hint of tar. Ripe and rich, but nuanced, with more complexity that takes time to fully uncoil. Really silky, precise and polished tannins, loaded with some fruit sweetness on the palate, then extending to the finish that lasts a minute. Drinkable now, but better to hold.

94 Points Robert Parker | The serious, balanced and quite complete 2019 Caro was made with 64% Malbec and 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and produced in a classical style. It's a wine with ripeness, Mendoza sun and Bordeaux elegance and subtleness. It feels harmonious and integrated, with 14.5% alcohol and good balancing freshness. It matured in French barriques and 4,200-liter oak foudre for 14 months, which was a shorter élevage and using larger-volume containers to achieve neatly integrated oak. It's complex, clean and elegant, and the palate reveals a velvety texture with juicy fruit and round tannins.

93 Points Wine Spectator | Elegantly styled, with lovely notes of plumeria and cocoa nibs clinging to lush blackberry and cherry flavors, which are buoyed by fresh acidity midpalate and fan out around fine tannins. This wine is 100% hand harvested Garnacha from a single plot that is all planted to goblet within the estate vineyard in the Los Chacayes IG within the Uco Valley. The palate is soft and round with red cherry and baking spices with a light tannin backbone. A very nuanced and layered wine.

The Wine Advocate 99 Points | The 2020 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard is nothing but phenomenal. It's very fresh and balanced and, for a warm year like 2020, doesn't show any heat or excess; it's subtle and has an ethereal character within the powerful and exuberant character from Gualtallary. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and some full clusters, sometimes up to 70% of the volume. It's intense and powerful, but something makes if feel light on its feet and with great inner power. This is still young and should develop nicely in bottle and for a long time.

James Suckling 96 Points | Ink and licorice with blackberry and black olive aromas. Medium-to full-bodied with round, fine tannins that are crunchy and refined. It has a juicy undertone and a savory finish. Just a hint of cedar and caramel at the end.

Vinous 95 Points | The 2020 Cabernet Franc Gran Enemigo Gualtallary hails from the higher-altitude regions of the Uco Valley. Despite being produced in a warm year, this wine maintains a juicy essence, although it lacks depth. It opens with an intense bouquet of grapefruit, violet and wild herbs. Natural fruit flavors emerge on the palate, highlighted by blackberry hints and a chalky texture, culminating in a long, fruit-driven finish. This wine is vertical, showcasing slightly riper fruit nuances. It’s interesting how a region like Gualtallary can shift its profile between warm and cool years, emphasizing the extremes.

Wine Spectator 93 Points | Fresh rosemary, graphite and tobacco accents meld with an elegant, orange peel–accented raspberry and plum core that reveals cocoa nib details while unfurling around a nice lift of fresh acidity, driving the flavors onto the finish structured around tannins. Drink now through 2040.

Winemaker Description 

El Gran Enemigo Gualtallary shows a deep purple color with red highlights. Its aromas are intense and elegant. Cabernet Franc brings sweet spices, black pepper and light notes of eucalyptus and thyme. Malbec brings notes of ripe black fruits, blackberries and black cherries. The oak aging gives a touch of chocolate and vanilla to blend. The taste is complex, sweet impact with structured tannins, and a very long and persistent finish. This wine was made in honor of the old Pomerol style where Cabernet Franc was blended with the other Bordeaux varieties.

This wine is excellent with grilled meats and various cheeses.

Fourth generation winemaker Federico Benegas Lynch was born and raised in the El Trapiche winery, where from a young age, his father had taught him how to blind taste wines. When he grew older, he went on to study with some of the best winemakers at wineries around the world. In 1999, under the guidance of Angel Mendoza, Trapiche’s head winemaker, Federico repurchased the old vineyard (Finca Libertad) that had belonged to his family, and was planted by Don Tiburcio. The following year, Federico bought a nineteenth century winery, outfitted it with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment, and began producing wines under the Bodega Benegas label. In 2010, Bodega Benegas acquired Finca La Encerrada, located in Gualtallary, Tupungato in Uco Valley; perched at over 4500 feet above sea level, the vineyard is among Mendoza’s highest altitude vineyards. It yields elegant wines of intense color, with pronounced fruity and floral aromatics and remarkable texture, due in large part to the exceptional climate and soil conditions.

Tasting Notes

The first attack of the taste of the wine is sweet, with bright notes of pineapple and peach. The second wave of taste is marked by delicate citrus notes and invigorating acidity, resulting in a perfect balance of freshness and sweetness. Light, aromatic aftertaste.

Winemaker Description 

Aromas of black ripe fruit and roasted bell pepper together with the typical freshness of the variety mingle softly with the fermentation notes rendering elegance and hits of cocoa and vanilla.

Mouth: Powerful wine with juicy and ripe tannins. In the mid palate it exhibits a set of layers where the aromas appear and complement the wine, giving it an elegant and very expressive long finish.

Arlow Wants To Be A Low-Alcohol Wine For Health-Conscious Wine Lovers.

"Over the last five years, we've seen increasing demand for solutions to moderate alcohol intake,” Arlow CEO Brandon Joldersma tells Forbes. “While non-alcohol wine has prospered, we discovered that there has been little innovation in low-alcohol wine.”

Joldersma highlighted the complex process of creating Arlow’s wines, involving blending full-alcohol wines with dealcoholized ones to achieve the desired 6.5% ABV. After a lot of experimentation, Joldersma says the team—including a winemaker and a flavor scientist—realized that they could create wines with around half the alcohol (and calories) of regular wines, which on average can have ABV levels between 12% and 15%, depending on the varietal and winegrowing region.

Thankfully, we have an in-house team that can dedicate the time required to get these blends right,” Joldersma says. “We taste hundreds of wines from our vineyard partners in California, working through a litany of blends to make sure we’re hitting the mark. It’s an art as much as it is a science.”

Thanks to the Uco Valley’s dry climate and phylloxera-resistant sandy soils, farming organically at Domaine Bousquet, from day one, was not only possible, but expedient.

Other factors that set this landscape apart include constant breezes from the Andes to the west, helping mitigate heat-stress in this desert-like climate. Significant day/night temperature differentials contribute enhanced aromatics, while sandy soils result in low fertility, desirable for vine stress and ideal for good drainage.

Thanks to the Uco Valley’s dry climate and phylloxera-resistant sandy soils,
farming organically at Domaine Bousquet, from day one, was not only
possible, but expedient. Other factors that set this landscape apart include
constant breezes from the Andes to the west, helping mitigate heat-stress
in this desert-like climate.

Winemaker Description 

Only 9 Percent Alcohol. Vegan. Using proprietary techniques, we were able to gently reduce the wines alcohol to 9% while maintaining 100% of the wines natural taste.

This resulted in an 85 calorie per 5 oz. serving Rose. The wine is naturally dry with zero sugar, yet imparts the perception of sweetness from the juicy red fruit flavors combined with an elegant minerality. The wine is then cold-stabilized for one week.

In terms of quality and price, this is arguably the best 'Bordeaux blend' in our portfolio, made by a winemaker who is passionate about the wines of his French cousins but still proudly Argentine. 50% Malbec, 20% Cab Franc, 20% Cab Sauv, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot.

A nose of black fruits, spices, white pepper, clove, cardamon, eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary - complex in other words, with a fantastic finish.

Federico Benegas Lynch was raised at ‘El Trapiche’, a winery established in 1883 by his great, great grandfather, Don Tiburcio Benegas, one of the original pioneers of Argentine wine. The winery was finally sold in the 1970s and in 1998, following a successful business career in Buenos Aires, Federico returned to Mendoza to re-kindle his lifelong passion and professional destiny, wine. He bought Finca La Libertad, an historic 40-hectare vineyard with ‘soils’ of stone on the old Upper Mendoza riverbank in Cruz de Piedra, and the old winery that belonged to his mother’s family which he quickly set about refurbishing. His idea was based on the traditional French Châteaux system, where proprietorship of vineyard and winery are inextricably linked.

Expert Review - Vintage 2019 

James Suckling 92 Points | Notes of mulberries, dark plums, chocolate, toasted hazelnuts and baking spices. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Fruity and layered with a rich, flavorful finish. 

Vinous 91 Points | The complex nose presents notes of plum and violets with hints of blackcurrant, balsam and country herbs over aromas from the aging process.

Winemaker Description 

Intense and deep color with purplish hues. On the nose, intense aromas of red berries, plums, and violets. There are also mentholated notes, spices, and quince touches provided by the Merlot. 

The Petit Verdot adds an exotic touch, as does a note of very ripe red pepper from the Cabernet Sauvignon. 

There are also mineral notes that are typical of the region, and vanilla notes indicating the wine’s aging in French oak. Great body and structure, with sweet tannins that will continue ripening. Persistent finish.
Good aging potential.

Gran Famiglia Bianchi was created as a tribute to the 90th anniversary of the winery. This is a wine that expresses the diversity of varieties that can be produced in this large terroir: Malbec; Merlot; Cabernet Sauvignon; Petit Verdot, and Tannat. 

The vineyards are located in Vista Flores, in the renowned Los Chacayes area (Uco Valley), in the province of Mendoza, at an altitude of 3,600 feet above sea level. In addition to the outstanding quality of its soil, this location offers a unique temperature range that produces wines of excellent color and exceptional organoleptic properties. 

The grapes were hand-picked. Fermentation was completed at controlled temperatures. 50% of the wine then spent ten months in French Oak barrels. After bottling, the wine was aged an additional eight months before release.

James Suckling 95 Points | Super saturated from the color to the flavors and finish, this wine shows how concentrated and layered a malbec can be. The color is dark to the rim, the aromas boast blueberries, dark cherries and creme de cassis, and the flavors layer black fruit over spearmint, cocoa and graphite nuances. Full-bodied, firmly tannic and balanced for many more years of improvement. Best from 2028.

Vinous 93 Points | The 2022 Malbec Bramare Valle de Uco blends grapes from a selection of vineyards across the Uco Valley. Twenty percent was aged for up to 18 months in oak barrels, while the remaining 80% was kept in tank. This purple-hued wine features notes of wet stone, black fruit, mint and blueberry, complemented by a fine layer of light oak. It is broad, smooth and concentrated on the palate, with a juicy mouthfeel that showcases wood nuances and a long, fruity finish. This lovely vintage balances concentration with freshness.

Wine Spectator 90 Points | There's a decent amount of oak, but this red wears it well, offering a chocolaty cast offset by fresh Santa Rosa plum and raspberry flavors with a slight graphite bite. Finishes with savory and mocha notes around plush tannins. Drink now through 2034.

Deep purple color. Very complex character with aromas of red fruit and violets with hints of spices. On the palate it has a very good structure, fresh acidity and fine grain tannins.
