Winemaker Description

Winemaker Ntsiki Biyela grew up in Mahlabathini, a rural village in Kwazulu Natal, and matriculated from high school in 1996. Having spent a year as a domestic worker, she was awarded a scholarship to study winemaking in 1999. She graduated in 2003 with a BSc in Agriculture (Viticulture and Oenology) at Stellenbosch University and joined boutique winery Stellekaya Wines the following year.

Ntsiki’s ambition to create her own wines grew following a collaboration with Californian winemaker, Helen Kiplinger, as part of Mika Bulmash’s Wine for the World initiative. In addition, she has consulted in France, making wine under Winemakers Collection in Bordeaux.

Finally, she sits on the board of directors for the Pinotage Youth Development Academy, which provides technical training and personal development for young South Africans in the Cape Winelands, preparing them for work in the wine industry. The programme offers them the unique opportunity to emulate her own considerable success.

Winemaker Description

The Chianti Classico Riserva has a ruby red hue with a trace of garnet. The nose is elegant, displaying hints of spice and fruit. This is a well-structured wine with smooth tannins and a long finish.

James Suckling 94 Points | Attractive aromas of ripe cherries, dried strawberries, dried orange peel, spices and crushed stones, following through to a medium to full body with compact tannins that are firm and finely grained. Smooth and textured with vivid fruit underneath and a lingering finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.(2020). 

Robert Parker 93 Points | In the bottle with the black label, the organic 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers ripe fruit with measured intensity that never feels heavy or overdone. Achieving this level of balance is not easy in a hot growing season such as this. This wine is characterized by an especially linear and direct personality that pushes it over the palate with good momentum. (2020).

Jeb Dunnuck 92 Points | A rich ruby color, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva is a selection from the best vineyards, aged for two years. The nose opens to ripe and polished aromas of toasted cedar, cherry lozenge, menthol, and spiced orange peel. Medium-bodied, it offers ripe tannins that fold into a more mineral texture, with mouthwatering stony earth and a rather long, clean finish.

Wine Spectator 90 Points | A juicy yet firmly structured red highlighted by bright cherry and blackberry fruit. Reveals dense tannins that inform the finish, where accents of earth and mineral linger. Balanced in a youthful, exuberant way. Best from 2025 through 2039.

Winemaker Description 

A luscious blend crafted each year to take advantage of the grapes that performed best in the vintage.

The nose opens with a mix of ripe blackberries, blueberries and dark cherries, intertwined with notes of mocha, vanilla and cracked peppercorn. The palate bursts with juicy concentrated fruit flavors, lush dark plum and a hint of boysenberry leading the way.

This wine features a plush, velvety entry, followed by a full-bodied mouthfeel that reveals fine tannins and balanced acidity.

James Suckling 91 Points | Perfumed aromas of wild blackberries, violets and and tobacco leaves. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins and acidity, giving notes of blackcurrants, cedar and dried herbs. Needs time for the tannins to soften. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

Wine Advocate 90 Points | Truchard's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is the best I can recall from this reliable Carneros producer. Black cherries and cassis are joined by hints of vanilla and violets on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is streamlined and smooth—a linear style with ample concentration and length, focused and fresh, with some slightly herbal notes on the finish.

Luscious aromas of raspberry, plum and cassis fill your senses with a touch of cedar and vanilla. Layers of ripe cherries, red currants and berry jam provide a rich mouth feel. Ripe tannins focus the palate and provide a lengthy finish of spice and deep red fruit.

The word "Balade" is French for wandering.  This is a fitting term for our annual exploration of single-vineyard pinot noir blocks on the west coast.  Each vintage, we will bottle only the most compelling and nuanced expression of pinot noir from a single selected vineyard and release it as a limited bottling.

Dark Purple-violet tones with enticing aromas of blackberry and boysenberry notes.  Sophisticated on the palate with flavors of black cherry, wild blackberry and jammy plum.  Balanced and structured, this wine has beautiful acidity that lingers through to a long, mouthwatering finish.

Matt Kettmann of the Wine Enthusiast writes 92 Points | Dried cherry, baked plum and a full spice rack of aromas show on the nose of this bottling. Tense, slightly sappy tannins frame the sip, where black plum, stewed cherry and bay leaf flavors lead into a wood smoke-kissed finish.

Georgina Hindle writes: A rich, full and heady nose. On the palate there's ripe blackcurrant, red cherries, raspberries and strawberries but also some mint, black pepper and truffle. Excellent precision and density with a seductive dark chocolate edge. Feels well handled with a sense of classicism. A powerful, muscular and confident wine, but with suppleness - this has density but also grace with a cooling finish comprising liquorice, mint and soft salinity. A great wine. James Suckling writes: A perfumed nose of mulberries, plums, chocolate orange and cloves. Hints of toffee, too. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins. William Kelley writes: The 2019 Gazin is a fleshy, dramatic wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of ripe berry fruit mingled with subtle hints of truffle and violets, its new oak already entirely integrated. Jeb Dunnuck writes: While the 2019 Château Gazin isn't going to match the 2018, it's an elegant, solid Pomerol delivering spicy red and black cherry fruits, notes of cedary herbs and flowers, medium-bodied richness, silky yet building tannins, and a great finish. Winemaker Description 

Montesecondo represents the purest expression of the Sangiovese grape that this earth produces. The aging process occurs in cement tanks, allowing the grapes tannin to soften, leaving space for the fruit to express itself and giving light to the wine. The grapes, 100% Sangiovese, come from our younger vines with a planting density of 6250 plants per hectare.

Bart Hopkins, 67 Wine Buyer: For centuries, Sicily has been a crossroad of cultures, languages, and religions. With a multitude of cultural exchange, many things came from distant places, grape varieties included. The Syrah grape had its origins in Persia and Mesopotamia and migrated across Europe finding its way to Sicily. The hot sunny climate is a perfect home for this intrepid grape variety and is conducive to natural organic farming.

Tenuta Rapitala Nadir Syrah is rich and well endowed with layers of black fruits and earthy spice. Full bodied and robustly structured with savory complexity and a chewy texture. Abundant and robust in the mouth, with supple tannins providing good grip on the finish, this is a perfect wine for foods of substance, such as pizza, pasta, grilled or roasted meats and hearty vegetable dishes.

This bright, lively wine showcases an abundance of berry flavors and aromas. Red raspberry, wild blackberry, and a touch of cranberry are balanced with spicy notes of anise and cinnamon. This medium-bodied Zinfandel lingers for a long, smooth finish.

The Caprice has a ruby color with garnet. The nose is fruity (cherry and raspberry) and tasty with a nice expression of ripe Merlot. On the palate, the attack is fresh with fine and elegant tannins.

Decanter Michaela Morris, 91 Points | Produced since 1979, Castellare’s annata sees its usual dollop of Canaiolo Nero as well as a brief passage in small French oak barrels. It is slightly confected to begin, then comes into focus with pure, fresh dark raspberry. Intense floral nuances of violet and rose join in, carrying over on the palate. It is concentrated in flavour with a light dusting of chalky tannins, while intrinsic juiciness keeps it agile. Admirable depth and length for the category. -Michaela Morris,

Winemaker Description

An authentic expression of Chianti Classico. Only native grapes, to maintain the most typical formula of the most famous of Italian wines, respecting tradition and the territory, enhancing the beautiful ruby red of Sangioveto. A wine which with its typical characteristics strives to achieve maximum elegance.

Bright ruby red, the color of Sangiovese.  The nose is fragrant and fresh with pleasant hints of red fruit, licorice, black currant and a hint of vanilla. Expresses a pleasant sweetness on the palate, it is round, soft and fruity. Acidity and persistence characterize a very elegant aftertaste.

Winemaker Description

70% Frappato/30% Nero d'Avola. From organically and Biodynamically farmed estate vines, averaging 20+ years old and planted on chalky, sandy soils. The bunches are harvested by hand, destemmed and co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in concrete tanks. Maceration lasts approximately two weeks. The wine is aged in concrete tanks for 6 months and bottled unfiltered. Sulfur use is modest. "SP68" is the Strada Provinciale 68, the country road on which the Occhipinti winery and home vineyard lie.

SP68 is a road but also a young wine. Fresh and pleasant, with a delicate taste that brings with it the taste of the sun and the freshness of this land. Juicy flavors of strawberry, raspberry and wild herbs complimented by refreshing acidity and soft tannins.

Intense purple robe. Rich and fruity nose of ripe Merlot; chocolate and toasty oak flavors. Fresh red fruits with fresh strawberry notes, light spices, harmonious tannins, with exceptional freshness. It has all the characteristics of ageing potential and concentration.

A brilliant ruby red, on the nose it is intense and fruity with ripe red fruits, a perfect example of classic Montepulciano-wines from this region. Rich, full-bodied, warm, fresh, with soft tannins and a long finish, it is the perfect accompaniment to grilled red meat, but also great just by the glass all at a great price.

Winemaker Description

Lush, layered and complex, this enticing Pinot Noir draws you in with aromas of ripe raspberry and black cherry, as well as notions of pennyroyal, clove and sweet baking spices. On the palate supple tannins and elegantly balanced acidity frame juicy flavors of blackberry and Bing cherry, with savory hints of nutmeg, leather and breakfast tea emerging on the long, robust finish.

91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Once again, the 2024 Pinot Noir Saint Georges presents one of the best Pinot Noir value propositions in the Central Coast. A poised and pretty nose of red and black fruits with woody, balsamic accents is followed by an elegantly lush palate, concluding with a fresh, balanced finish.

As with the Juvenile bottling, the 2022 Zinfandel Old Vines punches above its weight in this vintage. The nose is considerably deeper, fuller and more polished, opening with aromas of crushed plums, wild berry preserves, tobacco leaves and similar autumnal accents to its younger sibling. The palate is light- to medium-bodied, carrying through the polished quality of the nose and melds it with a subtly dusty tannin structure and bright acidity. The finish is straightforward and easy to drink, offering generous layers of fruit, spice and floral notes.

Winemaker Description

Dark brambly fruits, such as dark berry and fruitcake, dominate the palate. Notes of gingerbread, black pepper, and cinnamon add a beautifully spiced complexity. Hints of Herbs de Provence and a slight herbal quality are present.

Old Vines is composed of a variety of old sites from California that are either too small to be made into a vineyard designate wine or are “new” to the Turley family (and way of farming). Vines are anywhere from 50 to 130 years old, and a true representation of California old vine Zinfandel, hailing from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador and Paso Robles. There is no better way to gauge the classic character of old vine Zinfandel in California than through this wine.

Producer Description 

Pretty limpid-purple color, with violet undertones. The nose reveals a seductive aromatic bouquet with notes of red fruit such as blackcurrants and blueberries mixed with notes of leather and violet. The palate is full of freshness and well balanced with aromas of very ripe fruit, pepper and elderberries with very soft tannins giving this wine great drinkability.

Full-bodied, even robust, with a capacity to age but with such supple smoothness that it can be eminently drinkable even when young.

Bart Hopkins, 67Wine Buyer, writes: Coste di Moro is a more structured and substantial Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with rich dark fruit aromas: plums, blackberries and black cherries with earth and spice adding layered complexity. Robust and chewy textured in the mouth with robust tannins adding good grip and mouth presence. With a little more bottle age than many of its peers, this lovely Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is drinking at its very best right now, and will deliciously complement rich pasta sauces and anything off the grill. Demeter certified Biodynamic.

The 1100 ha of vineyards are located at an altitude of 432 m. a.s.l. between the lopes of the Majella National Park and at 15 Km from the Adriatic Sea, enjoying a peculiar position and a particularly favorable climate for organic and biodynamic farming. Today, with 80% of certified organic vineyards and 35% of biodynamic certified ones it is possible to walk through the vineyards of Cantina Orsogna partners and live totally immersed in an eco-friendly agricultural organism.

Ruby red colour with intense aromas of red fruit and black cherry jam, light notes of cocoa and toasted oak complete the bouquet. The palate is warm, fairly tannic but soft on the finish.

Bart of 67Wine.com writes | Starmont was created by Napa Valley winery Merryvale Vineyards in 1989, with the purpose of crafting wines from grapes sourced from selected cool climate vineyards located in northern and central California.Their 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon shows off the fruits of their efforts with terrific fanfare. There is a lovely essence of black fruits on the nose with layers of earthy spice and herbal complexity. Full bodied and concentrated with generous flavors coating the palate showcasing velvety richness and elegant tannins that flow effortlessly into the long lasting finish. This is a Cabernet lover’s Cabernet! Serve it with hearty bean and vegetable dishes, strong cheeses and anything off the grill.

Wine Enthusiast 92 Points | This opulent, concentrated wine offers red and black currant, blackberry and huckleberry woven together with green bell pepper, black licorice, tobacco leaf, blueberry compote and lemon zest. James Suckling 90 Points | Ripe black fruit with notes of baking spices, pine cones, cedar and bark. Medium- to full-bodied with creamy tannins. Succulent and fruit-forward yet a little fluid in the finish. Lots of spices and hints of sandalwood at the end.

The goal for Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon is richness and balance, with just the right amount of restraint to achieve a fresh, elegant example of Cabernet Sauvignon from California’s North Coast winegrowing region. On the nose, blackberry and boysenberry leap out of the glass with graphite and cedar adding complexity, while hints of sage and juniper maintain a fresh element. A focused entry with a generous mid-palate leads into a structured finish that lingers pleasantly.

James Suckling 93 Points | If all Cotes-du-Rhones were as good this, then the appellation would have a much better reputation. This deftly combines a full body and ample velvety tannins with a generous red fruit character plus hot earth and spice nuances. Excellent balance in the long, surprisingly elegant finish. Winemaker Description 

This wine displays a deep red hue with ruby tints and notes of sun-ripened black fruit on the nose. The palate offers a velvety texture and spicy notes underpinned by ripe black fruit, blackcurrants and black cherries.

A more modern take on the traditional Côtes du Rhône style, this wine combines structure, freshness and smooth tannins. It has a seductively elegant, intense and long-lingering finish.

This organic wine comes from the loess-rich site of Haidacker. The nose is juicy and stylish, with black-cherry aromas. Luis Gutiérrez writes: The 2021 El Jorco achieved higher alcohol than the 2019 and 2020 I tasted next to it, reaching 15%. They did a slightly shorter maceration, down to 42 days, and a shorter élevage of 14 months in 500-liter barrels. They consider 2021 a slightly warmer year than 2020, but still the wine comes through as a little more elegant; it's pale and aromatic, perfumed, fine-boned, nicely textured, very tasty, clean, precise and focused but with clout and tannins that might benefit from a little more time in bottle. Curiously enough, there's less alcohol and the sensation of ripeness here than in the bottling from the pink granite part of the vineyard that is sold under the name Vino de Familia. The result of a long history, Burgundy and its wines are known worldwide. Pinot Noir is a native grape variety of the area. Bourgogne Pinot Noir is the regional appellation whose wines can come from any part of Burgundy. This wine exhibits the characteristics of the great red Burgundies.

Our Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2021 has a ruby color. Its nose reveals notes of blackcurrant buds. Its round and fresh palate offers notes of cherry for a soft finish.

Decanter 90 Points | Conero is a little-known DOC in the coastal province of Ancona in the Marche. This 100% Montepulciano wine – the principal grape of the denomination – is vinified in stainless steel then matured in a mix of large casks and used barriques for 18 months. Fresh and dried cherry notes mingle with floral overtones, followed by a round mouthful of spicy, crunchy red berries and plum supported by plentiful but integrated tannins and good acidity. 

Wine Enthusiast by Jeff Porter writes 89 Points | Aromas of spiced blackberry jam, black tea and roasted rosemary lift from the glass of this darkly hued wine. Structured with firm, yet balanced tannins, with flavors of black cherry, licorice, clove and cedar on the lingering and giving finish.

Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2022 displays signature elegance and freshness, despite the vintage’s solar character. A deep red-purple hue and ripe black fruit, spices and lightly toasted wood aromas shine through in the wine. A generous and juicy prologue is ensued by rich, firm tannins, while the finish is aromatic, plush and persistent. The wine already offers a delightful drinking experience and will reach perfect maturity within ten years.

James Suckling 95 Points | The brightness and purity of fruit is so beautiful here, showing flowers and currants. Very aromatic. Lots of finesse and focus on the medium-bodied palate with super-fine tannins and a lovely finish. 

The Wine Advocate 94 Points | The Ornellaia 2022 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc that saw 15 months in barrique with one-third new oak. Following in the general Ornellaia philosophy, the team has been leaning off long maceration times for more delicate extraction. Blending for this wine usually occurs 12 months after fermentation. This vintage is structured and rich with sweet tannins and a supple texture. This hot vintage brings more fruit weight for sure, but the wine remains fresh and well balanced overall.

Decanter Magazine 93 Points | Merlot-dominant Serre Nuove is deeper, earthier and spicier in aroma compared to Le Volte. It has cool, balsamic herb edges with a concentration of chocolatey dark berries at the core; a finessed style that impresses. The tannins are fine and slightly grainy and grippy, and the acidity rings out. A wine of sapidity and freshness, this is a delightful option for drinking in the near- to mid-term,

The Wine Spectator 93 Points | A smooth red, this evokes cedar, plum, black currant, blackberry, vanilla and resin aromas and flavors. Broad and dense, with accents of leather, earth and tobacco on the long finish.

Vinous Media 93 Points | The 2022 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is everything a second wine should be. Open-knit and racy, the 2022 caresses the palate with succulent red fruit. James Suckling 91 Points | Blackcurrants, black olives and dried herbs with some smoked-meat and charred-wood character. It’s medium-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Focused and flavorful. Lightly chewy. Better from 2024.

The Wine Advocate 92 Points | The 2024 Pinot Noir Reserve, which contains fruit from many of the single vineyards in the Patricia Green portfolio, is elegant and energetic. It boasts pure, detailed aromas of red cherry, blackberry, bergamot, anise and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate is detailed and spicy with silky tannins, vibrant acidity that lures you back to the glass and a long, nuanced finish.

The 2024 Willamette Valley Reserve Pinot Noir is, as always, a great indicator of what to expect from Patricia Green Cellars’ wines from the vintage. In this vintage’s case it is even more than that. This wine has flavor intensity, texture, complexity, structure and length that are usually impossible to find in this combination in a Pinot Noir at this price point because wineries generally don’t have this much incredible old vine wine available to not only supplement their entry-level Pinot Noir, but be the actual backbone of it. This is red-fruited, highly perfumed Pinot Noir with the sort of high-level texture and length that are normally found in wines of double the price and more. This is utterly delicious now but will be a rare bottling at this level that would age easily for over a decade.

This bottling comes from terrific sources. The Reserve has always been a wine that looked to excellent and renowned vineyards for its make-up. The 2024 has an excellent and a completely unique pedigree, as noted above, for a wine at its pricing. For instance, nearly 16% of this bottling comes from fruit off of Hyland Vineyard. Our Hyland Vineyard, Coury Clone Pinot Noir bottling retails at $75/bottle. All of the barrels in the Reserve from Hyland easily could have gone into the Hyland Vineyard bottling had we chosen to make that much of that wine.

This wine carries the breadth of the winery in other ways as well. From completely destemmed grapes to 100% whole cluster fermentations, all winemaking stylistic decisions are represented within this bottling. The level of vineyards in this wine has always been something else and this year that facet is concentrated to an incredible degree. The 9 vineyards that make up this bottling would all be most winery’s best vineyard. Over 77 barrels of the 178 total barrels come from vine planted between 1972-1983. That’s 42–53-year-old vines in a $30-ish bottle of Pinot Noir. That is essentially unheard of in this day and age. 2024 Reserve Pinot Noir is nothing BUT a pedigree monster!

As noted earlier, the 2024 vintage is simply a great vintage. Possibly as great as the 2023 which we have touted as the greatest in the 25-vintage history of the winery. All the 2024s are particularly richly red-fruited, intense, deep and delicious at early ages in this vintage. Perfect for a bottling that values consumption at a youthful age even if it possesses unusual aging capacity for an Oregon Pinot Noir at this price.

This winery has always been dedicated to the concept of the highest-level quality without necessarily attaching a corresponding price point. Patty and I always wanted to have a winery that made wines that we liked to drink, but more importantly a winery that had wines we would, were we the customer, feel good about paying for. This Reserve Pinot Noir is as an important bottling to us and this winery as the lowest production, super-fancy, and exclusive wine that we make. Lots of people see, buy, and drink this wine and that is something that we love.
