While not untrue, calling Cheverny a value alternative to Sancerre would completely overlook the virtues unique to this appellation. It is a much zippier expression of Sauvignon Blanc compared to its famous neighbor, more citrusy than grassy. When Kermit introduced this wine in July 1993, he said, “Salvard makes the most drinkable, quaffable Sauvignon Blanc I have ever tasted.”

Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont's most respected producers, and Le Orme — whose name translates as "the footsteps" or "legacy" — is the estate's flagship Barbera d'Asti. Great color intensity. On the nose it expresses with splendid force the character of the Carménère variety, (berries, eucalyptus and leather), with notes of roasting -laurel and clove-, liquorice and pepper black. Great amplitude in the mouth and round tannins. Retronasal aromas of toasted bread and spices, ending in a long aftertaste.

This great wine is the ideal companion for roast lamb or pig as well as meats cooked over coals and spiced with aromatic herbs and licorice.

Drink this outstanding, classy white over the coming 2-3 years. I never cease to be amazed at the quality of the Côtes du Rhône white from this team, especially given the quantities produced.

The wine is built around Vinhão, a rare tinturier grape (red pulp, not just red skin) that gives the wine its striking deep color and structural backbone. Rabo de Anho — an untranslatable, rarely planted indigenous variety — rounds out the blend, adding lightness, freshness, and a delicate floral lift that keeps everything in balance.
