Winemaker Description

A very different year from 2022! After the spring frosts, the sun was long in coming, and the end of spring was marked by a lot of rain and humidity.
No drought to deplore this year, but excess humidity throughout the year, and until the harvest.

Diseases (mildew and powdery mildew) set in very early in the vines, the result of a cool and humid summer.

The 2023 harvests were marked by a lot of loss of grapes, due to rot (acetic pitting), linked to excess humidity.

For wines, the 2023 vintage is fresher than the previous year, with less alcohol concentration.

The aroma is rather floral and very fresh, with a nice balance. For reds, the tannins are more supple and the aromas are finer and more delicate.

If no wine region on earth can rival the stylistic diversity on display in France’s Loire Valley, the appellation of Anjou offers the perfect microcosm of the region as a whole. Long a staple of the bistros of Paris, the area is home a to a mind-bogglingly vast array of expressions— from white to red, bone-dry lusciously sweet, still to sparkling— derived from a handful of different grapes, from Cabernet Franc and Gamay to Sauvignon Blanc and Charodnnay. But one grape variety could be called the most distinctive of all: Chenin Blanc.

Sourced from vineyards that fall exactly along the border of the two sub-regions of Anjou, this gorgeously subtle white from fourth-generation winemaker Pascal Biotteau comes from the village of Saint-Jean-de-Mauvrets, situated on the old Roman road from Angers to Poitiers. 

Notes

The Mary Taylor Anjou Blanc Pascal Biotteau 2023 is a beautifully fresh and expressive Loire Valley white, made from Chenin Blanc. It offers bright aromas of crisp green apple, ripe pear, white peach, and delicate floral notes, with hints of honey and citrus zest. On the palate, it is vibrant and well-balanced, with refreshing acidity and a clean, mineral-driven finish.

Sourced from the rolling vineyards of Anjou in the Loire Valley, France, this elegant Chenin Blanc captures the region’s signature freshness and purity. Pascal Biotteau crafts this wine with a focus on terroir-driven expression, resulting in a lively, food-friendly white that pairs beautifully with seafood, soft cheeses, or light poultry dishes. A perfect choice for lovers of crisp, mineral-driven wines.

Winemaker Description 

Notes of plums, cherries, strawberries and fresh oranges, subtle hints of cassis, raspberries and blackberries. There is a mineral touch on the nose and a saline and toasted touch stands out on the palate, with a very fresh and balsamic finish. An original and explosive wine.

Rocky limestone clay soil of very low fertility. Altitude of the vineyards: 800m above sea level. Spontaneous fermentation, aged 6 months, 1/3 of the grapes fermented and aged respectively in clay amphorae, French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks.

Jeb Dunnuck writes:  Moving to the reds, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is one of the riper, broader, sexier wines in the vintage. Blackberries, roasted herbs, cured meats, chocolate, and Provençal garrigue all define the aromatics, and it’s full-bodied on the palate, with a powerful yet balanced style. Classic cuvées don’t get much better than this in 2020. It will keep for 10-15 years. The blend is 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvedre, brought up all in concrete.  Drinking 2022 to 2037.  - Jeb Dunnuck 93

Matt Walls writes:  Broad and full on the palate. Concentrated but not heavy, the alcohol slightly warming. It suits the traditional style, however, and this wine provides plenty of bang for buck in a traditional style. It’s lush and generous. Winemaker Description 

A richly flavored red with autumnal aromas, plush red/black fruits and peppery spice. Few other Provençal reds can match the power and grace of this bottle (its form a traditional Normandy "Calvados" shape that only Gourgonnier uses).

This is a classic "barbecue wine" but with enough elegance for a formal dinner.

• The Perfect Match: Grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic.

• Casual: Wood-fired pizza with olives and sausage or a hearty Ratatouille.

• Vegetarian: Roasted eggplant with miso or lentil stews.

Josh Raynolds of Vinous writes 92 Points | Bright ruby. Displays ripe, spice-accented cherry and dark berries, along with hints of succulent herbs and spices. Juicy and expansive in style, offering well-concentrated red and blue fruit flavors and a touch of cracked pepper. Creamy tannins sneak in late and add a gentle grip to a long, spice- and floral-driven finish. All de-stemmed fruit and raised in concrete tanks.

Jeb Dunnuck writes 92 Points |  Not yet bottled, the 2020 Gigondas offers more dark fruits as well as masculine notes of ground pepper, crushed stone, and sappy garrigue. Medium to full-bodied and nicely structured, it’s another rock-solid wine from this estate. The blend is 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, destemmed, and aged in concrete tank.

Jancis Robinson 16 Points, James Lawther MW writes:  Fruit bright and lifted on the nose. Supple and round on the palate. Firm, chalky tannins. Clean and fresh on the finish with some persistence.  55% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre. Organic.  Drinking 2022 to 2028.

Producer Description 

Intense, brilliant garnet color. On the nose, aromas of garrigue develop alongside spices and black fruits. Fleshy and dense palate, with notes of jam, ripe fruit, and spices.

The Domain: The history of Mas des Restanques began in 1995 with the union of our two family lands. After several years in a cooperative cellar, we took the plunge, created our own cellar, and released our 1st vintage in 2007.

We began orienting the domain towards Organic agriculture in 2009 and were certified by "Ecocert" in 2012. In 2019, our son Philippe joined us on the estate to continue the tradition while bringing new perspectives to the business. As a family, we put all our efforts into vine cultivation in order to offer consumers the best grape sources. Then, the low yields on clay soils limestone, thoughtful work of the harvest, and the development of our wines bring to our cuvées character, strength, and balance.

From oranges…

It comes from the distillation of high-quality Italian oranges, processed in their entirety of pulp and juice according to the exclusive Bonaventura Maschio process. Due to the production technique and the lower sugar content, it clearly differs from liqueurs and infuai.

Rich and ripe dark cherry fruit, along with attractive spicy, smoky notes. Fleshy and full, with surprising depth and length. This wine is intended to be consumed in its youth and is a terrific complement to roasted meats, pastas and pizza – the ultimate trattoria wine.

G.E. Massenez Uses Only Choice, Ripe, Hand-Picked Fruit. Made From Wild Raspberries By Means Of A Proprietary Recipe. Massenez Framboise Sauvage or wild raspberry is a style of eau-de-vie that uses raspberries as the base distillate. 

They say it's noteworthy for its "delicacy" and "mirrors the fragility of the raspberry." Fruit eau-de-vie is generally a drier taste but with aromas and character that reminds intensely of the fruit. This Was Introduced By G. E. Massenez Back In The 1930s. Producer Description.

An Icon of the Massenez Brand, the William Pear eau de vie “Prisoner Pear” captivates with its olfactory and gustative qualities and the pear-shaped bottle with a whole pear inside.

The bottle is attached to the pear tree when in flower... so the fruit grows inside the bottle. When the pear is ripe, the fruit and bottle are carefully detached. Williams Pear Eau-de-Vie from the Massenez distillery is outstandingly refined, concentrated and balanced. An intense emotion true to the personality of the original fruit.

Color: Clear, colorless, with characteristic fruit Eaux-de-Vies brilliance. A supple, fluid Eau-de-Vie.

Nose: Clean and typical of Williams Pear, with no strange notes. The intense nose is an indication of the quality of the selection of the original fruits and delicate distillation. Very fruity, long lasting and truly inviting bouquet.

Palate: The rounded ‘’ grain ‘’ of the Pear is very noticeable. In the mouth, a very intense floral note gives great freshness. Intense fruity note, with an initial perception of fresh fruit overlaid by ripe fruit and marmalade or jam. Very prominent spicy endnote with a hint of Liquorice typical of williams pear.

Massenez Williams Pear Eau-de-Vie was awarded the Gold Medal at the Concours Mondial des Spiritueux in Canada in June 2011 and 2012.

Kirsch from the Massenez distillery is outstandingly unique in character, strength and balance. An intense flavor for an eau-de-vie of unrivaled aromatic complexity.

Clear and colorless, may acquire yellow green highlights as it ages; characteristic fruit eaux-de-vies brilliance. Clean, typical Kirsch with no off notes.

Golden yellow liqueur with fine green shades reminding of the elder bush. Powerful and exotic nose, with lychee and spices (saffron, licorice) notes. Floral tasting notes enhanced by a touch of acidity. Various flowers blossoming on the palate: pink, hawthorn, fresh and dry flowers intermingle. 

Liquor inseparable from the Spritz Blanc cocktail where elderberry liqueur replaces Apérol, it is very difficult to execute.

A Lychee flavored liqueur, a rare sub tropical fruit originating in Southern China where the lychee is famed as “the King of Fruits”. The lychee grows to approximately 3-4 centimetres in size, oval to rounded-heart shaped with a bumpy skin that is red in color.  Once the skin is peeled, the crisp juicy flesh is white or pinkish, translucent and glossy like the consistency of a grape. Lychees have a sub-acid sweetness with a wonderful freshness. The fruit is also high in the antioxidant Vitamin C and the essential mineral Potassium.

Askos is the name of our project dedicated to the research, selection and cultivation of local heritage native varieties.The symbol is an askos, a Greek “decanter” dating from the 1st century B.C.

Deep ruby red. A wine with great character on the nose: sensations of black and red berries are backed by spicy notes, hints of licorice and cocoa and notes of eucalyptus. It is a full-bodied but not heavy wine, extremely satisfying and easy to drink. The alcohol percentage is well-balanced. Delicious now, it will age well.

Deep ruby red in color with violet hues and a full and persistent fragrance; notes of prune and cherry jam, sensations of caramel and pepper that reinforce a very interesting nose indicating a strong body; on the palate it is wide and warm, with flavors of pulpy fruit; it has a very long finish with scents of raisins and almonds.

Intense straw yellow. Stand out characters of apricot, pear, apple, peach, citrus, green almond, with notes of sage and mineral scents. Excellent acidity, sensations that recall ripe fruits. Great structure and strong flavor.

The Mastroberardino family is responsible for the recovery and relaunch of the ancient “Greco” vine, in the process of extinction, the identification of the production area and its vinification in purity. The result of a rigorous selection of grapes, Novaserra, which has become a classic, expresses an organoleptic complexity never reached. On the label are reproduced the details of a painting by Raffaele De Rosa, made on one of the vaults of the aging caves.

Full, complex and intense, with notes of cherry, violet, wild berries, and a distinctive spicy aroma. This elegant wine has flavors of plum, black cherry, strawberry and intense spices. Aged for 24 months in French oak barriques and Slavonian casks, then a minimum 24 months refinement in bottle. aging potential of 50 years or more. Pair with mature cheeses, truffles, porcini mushrooms, Ragout and other dishes with long cooked sauces and roasted red meats.

The Wine Enthusiast 94 Points | This wine has a deep, dark and tempting core of black fruits and oak spices that is surrounded by the velvety, welcoming texture expected from a Merlot. Blackberries, blueberries, toasted wood and cedar bring out complexity on the palate and linger on the finish. Best through 2030.

The Wine Spectator 88 Points | Tightly structured and focused, displaying red and black currant flavors laced with notes of cedar and herbes de Provence as this builds toward firm tannins. Best after 2024. 2,427 cases made.

The 2021 Alexander Valley Merlot offers notes of violets, marionberries and fresh plums with hints of black cardamon pods, cedar, green tobacco and white sage. Medium-to-full bodied with silky smooth texture and supple tannins.

Tinto Rey means Red King. Tempranillo is the king of Spanish red wines, the most important varietal in our Matchbook Vineyard and the foundation of this unique Tempranillo/Syrah blend. 

The aromas of our 2022 Tinto Rey are pure Spain in a glass: dark chocolate and earth and dusty cellar. The flavors are dense and complex with cedar and mocha layered over dried blueberry, poached fig and baking spices. A hint of eucalyptus hangs in the background. The finish is smooth with a balanced grip of tannins; silk with a backbone. This full-bodied red wine will pair well with the best cuts of meat.

Winemaker Description 

Materia Prima Orange is a pale amber, slightly cloudy orange wine produced entirely from biodynamically grown Xarel-lo and Sauvignon Blanc. It's simple to drink but full of incredible skill.

On the nose, it has citrus peel, tropical fruit, and compote, and on the palate, it has a fine structure with pleasant density and tannins. The finish is long and complex, making this a must-try for anyone who enjoys Orange Wines.

Wine Enthusiast 95 Points | First inhalations pick up nothing but sweet, beguiling ripe peach perfume; aeration expands the aroma by adding tarter scents of peach skin and pit. Palate entry is lean, tart and acidic yet ripe; the midpalate finds the acid underpinning gracefully balancing the sweet, peachy ripeness. Aftertaste is long, light-bodied and appropriately juicy.
