About Monprivato

Monprivato is one of the most celebrated single-vineyard crus in all of Barolo — and Giuseppe Mascarello’s exclusive domain. The 18 Year Old is a single malt Scotch whisky of serious distinction. It spends fifteen years maturing in American white oak casks before approximately 30% is transferred into Spanish Oloroso sherry casks for a further three years. Once both elements reach 18 years, they're blended back together to create a whisky with a rich bouquet and full, rounded flavour.

For a whisky of this age, this expression has maintained an incredible degree of vibrancy thanks to its delicate floral spirit and fine Oloroso casks, where the raisiny sweetness of the sherry is toned down by the nuttiness of the American oak.

The result is a symphony of understated opulence. Marzipan, fresh apple and pear, milk chocolate, red berries, candied ginger, and praline on the nose build slowly, leading into a fruity, spiced palate. Flavors of soft gingerbread, molasses cake, cherry pie, spiced plums, almond nougat, and dark chocolate intermingle with faint strains of pipe tobacco. Situated within the picturesque Spey valley, Rothes is home to five distilleries all tucked along the tiny main street - unbeknown to passing visitors. Amongst these is Glenrothes hidden in a small glen on the outskirts of the village. 

Today Glenrothes single malt is used as the heart of Cutty Sark blended whisky. Approaching the distillery your eyes are drawn to the right where the village graveyard stretches up the hill. As whisky matures it evaporates, this is known as 'the angels share.' Feeding off the evaporated whisky is a black sooty fungus, which gives an eerie atmosphere to the place. The blackened grave stones under the shadows of tall trees surrounded by distillery buildings.

Tasting Notes: Toasted malt with fruit aromas, hints of green apples and fresh coconut. A subtle salty sea air is also present. Sweet with floral and fruit flavours, banana, and lemonade with a slight walnut edge.

Winemaker Description

We embraced the structure up front when making this wine because we wanted a strong phenolic profile to bind with and stabilize the tannin. Baking spices (clove and cinnamon) with a kiss of oak.

Ripe black fruit on the palate, black currant and blackberry. A hint of vanilla and smooth tannins on the plush finish.
