Alvaro Domecq La Janda Fino Jerez-Xeres-Sherry 750ml
Expert Review
Michael Schachner of The Wine Enthusiast writes 90 Points | A tan-gold color and oily aromas of almond and walnut open this surprisingly refined Fino. Flavors of butter, peanut and baked apple turn smokier and huskier as this sits, while nut flavors control an expansive finish.
Gratavinum Rocaforts Vi de Paratge Gratallops Priorat 2019
Winemaker Description
Cherry red color of medium intensity, medium layer. The nose is intense, with notes of jelly beans and red fruits combined with mineral notes of flint and a light background of toast. At the entrance to the mouth we will find soft tannins, with high volume and fat, well compensated by good acidity and a general feeling of verticality. Red fruits and mineral notes stand out, resulting in a long and intense aftertaste.
Evolution
In good conditions of this bottle will evolve positively for at least the next 7 years.

Agricola Calcarea Sin Bulla Blanco 2022 750ml
Winemaker Description
Juan Jurado belongs to a new generation of young winemakers who see potential in the Marco de Jerez region beyond traditional fortified wines. After living away from his native Andalusia for many years (from Sitges to Australia via London), during which time he trained in the world of wine and sommellerie, he decided to return to his roots to start a project focused on authentic wines that reflect the diversity of the Jerez Region beyond Finos and Olorosos.
In 2022, Jurado invested all his savings to purchase a small vineyard in the Miraflores de Sanlúcar estate, along with winemaking equipment including a press, destemmer, casks, and jars to produce his first vintage. This marked the birth of Agrícola Calcárea, a project dedicated to crafting honest wines using minimal yet sufficient intervention to showcase the unique characteristics of each vineyard through classic and ancestral varieties of the Marco region.
The resulting wines are highly aromatic, featuring stone fruit, citrus, and white flower notes, with chalky and salty undertones. On the palate, they are savory and mineral, with a touch of bitterness.
Agricola Calcarea Porfia Tinto Tintilla Rota 2023 750ml
Winemaker Description
Andalucía has a long tradition of producing non-fortified wines—reds and whites made from the same grapes used for fortified wines (Sherry). In Andalucia these still wines are known as Vinos del Marco de Jerez or Vinos de Pasto. It is important to highlight that these wines do not belong to the Jerez-Xeres-Sherry DO. In recent years, producers like Willy Pérez, Ramiro Ibanez and others have led a movement to bring these wines back into the spotlight, aiming to place them on tables around the world.
During a recent in-store tasting with Nacho Monclús, Spanish & South American Portfolio Manager at T. Edwards Wine & Spirits, he introduced me to a producer from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Andalucía: Juan Jurado of Agricola Calcarea.
Mr. Jurado represents a new generation of winemakers who have spent years working abroad, gaining experience in vineyards as well as in both front- and back-of-house roles in the restaurant industry. These experiences have enriched their perspective, and upon returning home, many have sought to revive the long-standing traditions of their ancestors. Mr. Jurado is one such story.
After more than a decade away, he returned to Andalucía and founded Agrícola Calcárea, producing wines in a small-scale, garage-style setting. His wines quickly gained national recognition, attracting the attention of the press. Now, his work has reached New York City, where wine lovers can experience his unique expressions firsthand.
When Nacho presented the wines to me, I was immediately drawn to their beautifully designed labels. The three wines I tasted featured indigenous Andalusian grape varieties, including Palomino (also known as Listán Blanco) and Tintilla Rota. All three expressions stood out, but my palate that day had a particular affinity to Agrícola Calcárea Porfía Tinto 2023 — an electric, vibrant red made from Tintilla Rota.
Porfia Tinto 2023 is unlike any other Spanish red currently available in the NYC market, this wine is a testament to the energy and innovation defining the new wave of Andalusian winemaking.
Porfia Tinto 2023 opens open with an alluring nose of sun-kissed black fruit: black cherries, black berries with undertones of dried Mediterranean herbs. On the palate this red is harmonious walking a tight rope of tannins, acidity and flavor: Suave tannins, crisp acidity and just perfect fruit quality.
Pair this red with Pan-Roasted Quail lightly dressed in thyme butter sauce.

Bodegas del Rio Manzanilla Pasada Oro Solera Playa 750ml
Experience the Distinctive Flavor of Bodegas del Rio
Experience the distinctive flavor of Bodegas del Rio Manzanilla Pasada Oro Solera Playa, an exceptional sherry that represents the pinnacle of traditional Spanish winemaking. This rare Manzanilla Pasada spends nine years under flor, making it the most intensely aromatic bottling from this prestigious bodega. With only 1,500 bottles produced, this is a limited-production treasure that showcases the perfect balance of tradition and innovation from one of Spain's most respected sherry producers.
Nine Years Under Flor
This Manzanilla Pasada is distinguished by its extended aging of nine years under flor, the layer of yeast that develops naturally on the surface of the wine in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. This prolonged biological aging creates the most intensely aromatic profile in the Bodegas del Rio range, developing complex flavors and aromas that set it apart from younger Manzanillas. The "Pasada" designation indicates this extended aging, resulting in a wine of exceptional depth and character.
Tasting Profile
The Oro Solera Playa offers a delightful fusion of aromas that are both invigorating and complex. On the nose, you'll find the most intense aromatics with hints of almonds, brine, and a touch of citrus. The palate showcases good freshness and balance with a rich texture and layered flavors that develop into a harmonious blend of dried fruits, notes of chamomile, and subtle salinity. The wine finishes with a distinctive salty twist and a pleasant bitter note that reflects the unique terroir of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where the Atlantic Ocean influences the character of these exceptional wines.
Limited Production Excellence
With only 1,500 bottles produced, this Manzanilla Pasada represents a rare opportunity to experience one of the finest expressions of Sanlúcar sherry. Bodegas del Rio has earned a prestigious reputation for their exquisite sherries, and their commitment to sustainable practices ensures that the grapes are cultivated with care and precision. Over the years, the bodega has refined its techniques, making each bottle an experience in itself and a sought-after choice for connoisseurs.
Serving & Pairing Suggestions
This incredibly versatile sherry is perfect for various occasions:
- Aperitif - serve chilled (6-8°C) before meals
- Seafood - pairs beautifully with fresh oysters, clams, and grilled fish
- Tapas - complements olives, anchovies, and jamón ibérico

Spanish Sherry Heritage
Bodegas del Rio's dedication to quality is evident in every sip of this Manzanilla Pasada. Chill the wine slightly before serving to enhance its crispness and refreshing qualities. The wine's capacity to adapt to different cuisines makes it a must-have addition to any collection, celebrating the richness of Spanish culinary culture and the unique terroir of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
Bodegas del Rio Manzanilla Fina Solera Playa Azul Joven 750ml
Winemaker Description
A young Manzanilla with four year of biological aging. Thanks to the proximity of the sea, the aging under flor is intense. The wine has complex character, resulting in great elegance, plenty of finesse, with a delicate and saline finish.
Our Notes
A vibrant young Manzanilla with plenty of character. Aromas of green olives, green citrus fruit, and a pungent saline quality bind all the aromas and flavors together. Serve well-chilled in a white wine glass and pair with Marcona almonds, potato crisps, and Jamón de Bellota. But also try it with cold potato and leek soup, sprinkled with crisp bits of pancetta. Manzanillas are my ideal apéritif wine to awaken the palate before a meal.

Vina Sastre Ribera del Duero Flavus Blanco 2019 750ml
Winemaker Description
Viña Sastre is an iconic, family-run winery in the heart of Ribera del Duero, famous for making long-lived, elegantly structured wines from organic, old vines grown near the Duero river. Flavus is an incredible, singular white wine made from indigenous cayetana blanca grapes from 100-year-old vines, selected from Sastre’s historic Pago de Santa Cruz vineyards at 800m to 840m for their complexity and ability to age gracefully. Sastre handcrafts classic wines through extremely low-yielding biodynamic farming methods, fermenting exclusively with native yeasts.
In Pago de Santa Cruz, a small amount of white cayetana blanca grapes have always existed alongside the red tempranillo, co-planted and traditionally mixed into the field blend destined to be one of Spain’s most iconic wines. Through Jesús Sastre’s good friend and Rías Baixas pioneer Gerardo Méndez, they first researched and separated the white grapes from the blend, making the first Flavus in 2007 to make a simple, charming white wine for near-term consumption. Ribera del Duero does not have much of a tradition for white wines, so the initial concept was to make something simple and humble. Instead, they discovered through the cellaring and consistent tasting of verticals of Flavus over the years that the wine is capable of improving in bottle for a decade or more, leaving tasters stunned by the unique, complex flavors which develop. There is no designation for Ribera del Duero blanco, so while this mighty blanco may be a “Reserva” qualitatively and spiritually, bureaucratically, it carries the humble Vino de Mesa designation. Perhaps in the future, the appellation will see the same possibilities for value and quality in their white wines as their more famous reds.
Vinification – Following a manual harvest, the wine spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel. No malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked and aged in stainless steel for ten months, followed by two years of bottle age prior to release.

Romate Reserva Especial Regente Palo Cortado Jerez-Xeres-Sherry 750ml
Expert Review
Wine Spectator 89 Points | There's a richness here offsetting the firm structure, but the iodine and roasted walnut notes shine on the finish. Caramel, burnt molasses and tobacco round out the flavor spectrum. Drink now. 1,750 cases made.
Winemaker Description
Mahogany colour with iodine tinged edges. Strong and nutty, with hints of varnish, caramel and vanilla. Very dry, well-rounded structure, with faint hints of saline, a slightly bitter and long- lasting finish.

Winemaker Description
Amazingly brilliant showing a pale yellow color. Clean and sharp, displays fresh green apple aromas mingled with enticing almond notes. Very nice salty nuances that evokes the sea. Sheer class with a dry palate.

The traditional cathedral architecture of Osborne cellars provide the ideal atmosphere for sherry aging and maturation: high ceilings and numerous windows complement the "Criaderas and Soleras" aging technique, the required method for Sherries producing consistent quality year after year. Osborne exceeds the aging requirements set by the Sherry Control Board to provide their wines with extra complexity and extraordinary character.

Fazenda Agricola Pradio Mencia Ribeira Sacra 2021 750ml
Winemaker Description
Xabi Soeanes is in love with his Galician countryside, and he’s even more taken in by its nearly forgotten past. His greatest desire, his dream, is to share this cultural treasure with the world, through the lens of his varietally blended wines—the
historical winegrowing practice of this area.
Fazenda Prádio (named after a local tree known as a false maple, or sycamore) is located within the Chantada subzone, one of the coldest of Ribeira Sacra, heavily influenced by the Atlantic.
His 3.5ha of vines, a collection of Mencía, Caíño Longo, Merenzao, Brancellao, Godello, and other indigenous varieties, are perched on wide terraces between 180-300m that overlook the Miño River gorge and are carved out of a steep hill split with granite and schist. Xabi practiced organic and biodynamic farming for years but after a series of seasons that almost put him out of business, he keeps the door open to move freely when needed.
Oriol Artigas El Rall 2022 750ml
Winemaker Description
El Rall Artigas Alella Red, biodynamic wine, 50% Merlot, 20% Garnatxa Negra (Grenache Noir), 20% Syrah, and 10% Sumol from 4 vineyards planted on granitic sand.
Oriol’s ancient vineyards of native vines are largely based on granite rock, known locally as Sauló, at between 100 and 350 metres elevation. This results in wines often rich in minerality, conjuring aromas that will take you all the way to the Mediterranean.
The grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tank with 3 days on the skins, then transferred to a mix of stainless steel tanks and used barrels to rest for approximately 18 months before blending and bottling with no sulphites.
El Rall Artigas is natural, hot climate red wine which is bursting with flavour and although 100% pure, there is no real funkiness, just soft fruits and tension from the granite soils.
Campeador Rioja Blanco Viura 2022 750ml
Winemaker Description
Limited Production - only 1,900 bottles produced.
Today we present the Vintage 2022 of Campeador Viura, the first white wine to be produced under the Campeador brand which, as you know, was created in 1916 to produce the first Rioja cavas. This is a limited edition in the style of the great historic white wines of Rioja. A wine that can be considered a wine for cellaring, so you can keep it in your private cellars for a few years or you can drink it immediately thanks to its harmony, intensity and subtlety.
It is a slightly disruptive Viura, but at heart it is a classic wine, like a vintage. It is always very floral and a little citric. The use of the skins was intended to provide a little bit of support, a little bit of nerve. You can see a halo of freshness that may indicate good ageing, but we will see if the wine itself achieves homogeneity”.
Campeador Viura 2022 comes from an old Viura vineyard. Harvested by hand, the grapes were destemmed, destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. At this point, the winemaking process is bifurcated. One part is vatted and treated as clean must, while the other part is kept with its skins in the style of a traditional Rioja red wine.
Fermentation takes place in wooden vats and ageing in French oak vats. As you can see, we wanted to recover from the annals of Rioja winemaking a very old-fashioned way of making wine, starting the process with the skins and finishing it off with a moderate ageing in barrels.
On the nose it has more oxidative Viura sensations, as if it were from an older vintage.
It is the palate that reminds us that we are talking about a young wine because of its hints of citrus and stone fruit.
Guimaro Mencia Ribeira Sacra 2024 750ml
Experience the Richness of Guimaro Mencia Ribeira Sacra
Producer Description
Guimaro means 'rebel' in local dialect. Old vine Mencia vines leads to concentrated and juicy grapes. Savory and silky, with luscious flavors of red fruit, plums, earth, and sweet spice.
Cultivated since Roman times, Ribeira Sacra’s steep terraced vineyards are some of the most picturesque and treacherous to work in the world of wine – think of the Douro, Cote Rotie, or the Mosel. Like those most dramatic terruños, winegrowing here is not for the faint of heart; it takes spirited determination, eternal optimism, a sense of tradition, and a willingness to collaborate. Pedro Rodríguez of Adegas Guímaro embodies all of these qualities.
Memo Summary Notes
The 2024 Guímaro Mencía is a standout "young tinto" (Joven) from one of the most dramatic wine landscapes in the world—Ribeira Sacra, Spain. Guímaro (meaning "rebel" in Gallego) was a pioneer in putting this region on the map, and the 2024 vintage continues their tradition of producing high-energy, mineral-driven reds.
Mencía is often described as a cross between Pinot Noir and Syrah, making it exceptionally versatile:
-
Local Spanish Pairing: Charcuterie (especially Chorizo or Salchichón) and dishes heavy on pimentón (Spanish smoked paprika).
-
Entrées: Roasted pork loin, grilled sausages, or even seared duck breast.
-
Vegetarian: Earthy dishes like roasted beets, lentil soup with kale, or mushroom empanadas.
-
What Makes Guimaro Special
Guimaro Mencia Ribeira Sacra is a remarkable red wine that stands out due to its exceptional quality. This wine is made from 100% Mencia grapes, which are known for their vibrant acidity and deep flavor profile. When you taste Guimaro, you’ll immediately notice the balance of fruitiness and earthiness, complemented by hints of spice. Its unique character isn’t just a coincidence; it reflects the rugged terroir of Ribeira Sacra, where the steep slopes and slate soils contribute to the complexity of the wine. This blend of factors makes Guimaro a must-try for any wine enthusiast.
Tasting Notes and Food Pairing
On the palate, Guimaro Mencia delivers an explosion of flavor. Expect notes of ripe cherries, dark plum, and subtle herbal undertones, which create a nuanced experience. The wine's smooth tannins and refreshing acidity make it versatile for food pairing. This means it complements a range of dishes beautifully. Pair Guimaro with grilled meats, rich stews, or even a selection of aged cheeses. However, if you prefer lighter fare, it also goes well with roasted vegetables or a simple pasta dish. So, whether you're hosting a dinner party or enjoying a quiet evening, Guimaro will elevate your meal.
Craftsmanship and Sustainability
Guimaro is crafted with a commitment to sustainability, ensuring that every bottle reflects a responsibility towards the environment. The winemakers practice organic farming, which enhances the authenticity of the wine while preserving the natural ecosystem of the region. This dedication to quality and the environment is evident in every sip. Because of this commitment, you not only enjoy a delicious wine, but also support sustainable practices that benefit future generations. So, choosing Guimaro means enjoying a great wine while also making a positive impact.

Vinas Viejas de Pegaso Cebreros Granito 2021
Expert Review - Vintage 2021
Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate 96 Points | The 2021 Pegaso Granito has a very clean nose and comes through as very approachable, with an elegant personality. They picked all grapes together (there were some unripe grapes) and fermented it all together. The wine has a medium-bodied palate, the granularity of the tannins is extremely small, and it has a very fine mineral sensation. It has incredible elegance and finesse, with lifted aromatics, high-pitched, acute, fine-boned and with the frontal tannins from the granite soils.
Producer Description
Cebreros is both the name of the village and the appellation of origin in the southeast of the province of Ávila, within the greater Sierra de Gredos region, the mountainous area located on the continental divide of Spain. The region is unspoiled, wild, rustic, full of energy and light, and as authentic as it gets. It is a transitional zone where northern Spain gives way to southern Spain. The wines from the Sierra de Gredos mountains to the west of Madrid (aka Vinos de Madrid) have finally begun to claim their rightful place alongside other top wine regions focused on producing world-class garnacha. For many insiders, the region is now leading the conversation about this Mediterranean garnacha grape, now understood to be indigenous to Spain.
Whole clusters are picked by hand in small boxes, with a strict selection made in the vineyard. The clusters are de-stemmed, crushed, and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and large neutral French oak foudres. The wine is then aged for 18 months in new and used 600L French oak barrels sourced from different forests.
Vinas Viejas de Pegaso Cebreros Barrancos de Pizarra 2021 750ml
Expert Review - Vintage 2021
The Wine Advocate Luis Gutierrez writes 97 Points | From the vines on the mid slope and has a very elegant, fragrant nose with notes of concentrated violet and a solid palate. The slate tannins give a talcum powder texture, and the wine opens up in the mid-palate, making it very expansive. In the long term, it seems like the slate gives a better palate and the granite is more nose.…This has the combination of the cooler year and the resilience of the slate soils, coming through as complex and elegant, powerful and concentrated but with an ethereal side to it too. Bravo!
Producer Description
The Pizarra vineyards are found on red metamorphic slate soils, which are unique to the village of Cebreros, folded into the mostly granitic mountain range. This slate soil makes Cebreros unlike any other village within the Sierra de Gredos region. Pizarra soil is located above 950 meters, up to 1200 meters, mainly with an eastern orientation.
The wines from here have a signature expression: they are always fresh, complex, direct, and profound. Pizarra is a limited production wine produced from over 60-year-old, bush-trained garnacha vines, yielding 15hl/ha from the vineyards of Arrebatacapas, La Redonda, La Curva, Fuente Fabian, and Presidente. The farming at Pegaso is organic, and the wines are made with low intervention and minimal sulfur at bottling.

Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana Wellington Palo Cortado VOS 20yrs Jerez-Xeres-Sherry 500 ml
Producer Description
Palo Cortado is unusual, in that it first ages under a film of yeast ‘flor’ which protects it from oxygen, but unexpectedly loses its flor and ultimately ages oxidatively. Only 1-2% of all sherries produced ultimately become a Palo Cortado. Thus, the freshness of Manzanilla and Oloroso and the complexity of dry Amontillado are combined. When aged over twenty years it is entitled to the designation VOS (Very Old Sherry). This sherry was once sold to British troops under the name ‘Wellington’, and the 1st Duke of Wellington’s portrait is still used on the label today.
The palate is full rich and rounded. A very light amber color given its advanced age, and a bouquet that demands attention. Delicate and pure on the nose. Penetrating aromas, nutty yet with tangy freshness. Completely dry, but notes of butterscotch and walnuts. A clean, racy style, with almond and hazelnut husk notes backed by toasted corn, walnut and singed sandalwood accents. A touch of dried persimmon echoes on the very dry finish. One of the great dry sherries. 17.5% ABV.
Las Beatas Lanzaga Telmo Rodriguez Rioja Cosecha 2020 750ml
Producer Description
Las Beatas is a spectacular 1.9 hectare property which Telmo and Pablo have invested tremendous time and energy: 15 years of renovative viticultural work took place before a single bottle was made.
There are at least ten grape varieties grown on eight terraces, predominantly Tempranillo with 30% Garnacha, some Viura and traces of many other rare, perhaps unidentified cultivars, all planted on cold sandy soils. Las Beatas was made and aged in a single 1200 liter old French foudre. This is a refined, elegant and fluid wine with great complexity and nuance that will age beautifully.

Marques de Murrieta Capellania Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva 2018 750ml
Expert Reviews - Vintage 2018
96 Points James Suckling | Mineral, macadamia, pine nuts, white sesame and white fruit with a touch of spice. A bright and linear Capellania that shows excellent tension, freshness and complexity. Long and appetizing finish. More taut and gastronomic now. 100% viura. Drink now or hold.
95 Points Tim Atkin | The cooler 2018 vintage was ideally suited to the production of high-quality whites like this pure Viura from a six-hectare plateau at 485 metres within the extensive Castillo Ygay estate. Modern, perfumed and poised, it has finely integrated French oak, fennel, thatch and beeswax aromas, herbal complexity and a nutty, fragrant, citrus zest palate. 2025-40
94 Points Wine Advocate | To catch up with the current vintages that I shall review every 12 months from now on, I tasted two vintages of some of the wines, including the whites. The 2018 Capellanía is 100% Viura from the plot that names the wine. The vineyard is six hectares planted in 1945 at 485 meters altitude, the highest in the estate. It fermented in concrete, the first vintage to do so, as it was fermented in stainless steel until then, and matured in second-use French oak barrels for 22 months. It spent a further seven months in concrete, a long élevage, with the idea to produce a structured white with aging potential, while keeping the varietal character. The wine is subtle and elegant, following the path of all the wines in the portfolio here, still marked by the élevage in oak, spicy and smoky. The palate is balanced, with a nice combination of fruit and oak, with a soft texture, clean, focused and tasty. It has 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.1 and 6.10 grams of acidity. 21,836 bottled and 688 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2022. This is now released with the Gran Reserva back label.
Taanug Pinord Macabeo Xarello Kosher 2022 750ml
Winemaker Description

PM Spirits Fino Saca Junio 2021 Jerez-Xeres-Sherry 750ml
Winemaker Description
This saca de Junio comes from a Fino solera that has aged in a bodega in El Puerto de Santa Maria. It has spent the entirety of its time aging beneath a veil of flor. Typically used for blending purposes, this remarkable solera has never previously been bottled on its own.
Nicolas Palazzi was raised surrounded by his family’s vineyards in Bordeaux and introduced to spirits, Cognac and Cognac cellars through a dear friend of Nicolas’ grandfather. This gentleman will be referred to as “Mr. X”.
Established somewhere in the Cognac region of France, Mr. X’s family started distilling at over a century ago. Recognizing in Nicolas a fledgling passion for Cognac, this mysterious man shared his knowledge and connections within the small and commonly impenetrable world of artisan Cognac. This gave rise to PM Spirits, as Nicolas began sourcing, collecting, aging and blending these rare casks and subsequently releasing limited series bottling in the USA.
PM Spirit’s passion for artisan spirits has slowly broadened its focus over the years to include within its portfolio other small-scale hand-crafted distillates such as Sicilian Grappas, French Eau-de-vies & Liqueurs, Rum, Tequilas, Mezcals.
