The 2023 vintage of Illumination reveals aromatic purity and incredible depth. Classic notes of grapefruit peel, lemon curd, and white peach are layered with undertones of ginger tea, wild thyme, and clover blossom - the floral character a hallmark of the cool vintage. On the palate, flavors of kumquat and guava mesh with wet slate and elderflower. A lovely textural roundness is balanced by racy acidity and minerality. While vibrant in its youth, this wine's structure also promised aging potential.

When making Illumination our ultimate goal is to produce a white wine of true character. The Wine Advocate 94 Points | Grapes for the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc L’Après-Midi were picked from September 21 through November 2—an especially long harvest window. “It was a special year because everything was pushed back,” Winemaker Robert Fiore says, noting that the cooler season resulted in very lively wines. Blended with 4% Sémillon, the 2023 L’Après-Midi is open and inviting. Pineapple, peach and guava are accented by tones of beeswax, dried tarragon and candle smoke on the nose. The palate is bursting with concentrated, tropical, spicy flavors. Its vibrant acidity provides the perfect foil, lending the wine a shimmery feel, and it has a long, perfumed finish. 1,850 cases were made.

2023 'L’Après-Midi' (The Afternoon) was named in honor of the pleasures of a slow and lazy afternoon, which according to Sir Peter is a good time to start enjoying this wine. This is one of our two estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon blends.

The grapes are grown alongside our red Bordeaux varietals within Les Pavots Vineyard, benefiting from the steep slopes, excellent drainage, and cool air at altitude. The wine is whole-cluster-pressed and then naturally fermented in a barrel, forgoing a second malolactic fermentation to preserve the fruity and zesty character of the Sauvignon Blanc. It is predominantly made from Sauvignon Blanc, with just a touch of Sémillon.

You will find tropical fruit notes including lemon, tangerine, and a hint of peach.  Great wine. It is not grassy but rather soft on the palate. Very elegant, balanced and not over ripe. Staff tasted & recommended.

Winemaker Description 

History: George Elworthy trained as a winemaker at Lincoln University, and worked several vintages in Marlborough and overseas. When Jules Taylor started her own wine label in 2008, trained winemaker and hubby George Elworthy became general manager (or “general dogsbody”). Not wanting to let wife Jules have all the fun, George launched his own label in 2011. With his tongue firmly in his cheek, he called it “The Better Half” Style: Delicious, fruit-driven wines that are meant to be enjoyed right now. Not left to gather dust in your wine rack.

Winemaking: Wines are fermented using minimal intervention and modern winemaking techniques.

Vineyards: Grapes are sourced from a selection of grower and estate vineyards in sunny Marlborough, all of which are 100% certified by the Sustainable Winegrowers NZ Scheme.

2024 Vintage:

The 2024 Marlborough season was warm, dry and windy. Vine growth began late, and it quickly became obvious that the harvest would be much smaller than previous years.

With fewer berries on the vine, the warm temperatures through summer caused one
of the shortest ripening periods on record. Cool evenings helped retain acidity during ripening and balanced the concentrated, ripe fruit flavors.

Grapes were harvested from various Marlborough sites throughout March 2024, with a high proportion coming from the slower ripening, more aromatic Awatere subregion. The wine was fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures and bottled under screwcap for maximum freshness.

Food Match:

Enjoy al fresco with fresh shellfish with a squeeze of lime, or any kind of salad. For
something more substantial, pair it with Thai- or Vietnamese-flavored dishes.

Color: Pale yellow.

Nose: Punchy citrus aromas of lime and grapefruit leap from the glass, along with notes of guava and fresh cut grass.

Palate: Dry, juicy and intensely flavored on the palate, with bright citrus notes and a pop of guava. The finish is long, carried by vibrant, refreshing acidity and a dash of salinity.

Salt River Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of five different vineyard sites located around Stellenbosch. The anchor of the wine is the now a 35year-old bush vine vineyard grown on the slopes of Bottelary. The other components are trellised and bush vine vineyards, with various different aspects, planted in granitic soil. These vineyards have combined exceptionally well in creating the saline mineral style of Sauvignonn.

Pale straw colour. Intense aromas of ripe citrus and tropical fruit that lead to a fresh palate with medium body. The wine’s characteristic fruit intensity is balanced by fresh acidity and moderate alcohol. The finish is long.

Producer Description 

Our 2023 Sauvignon Blanc has aromas of grapefruit, lime zest, white flowers, white peach, lemon grass, and orange peel. On the palate are aromas of pineapple, guava, tropical fruit, Asian pear, candied lemon, and green melon. The wine has a bright acidity and wonderful texture on the mid-palate.

 While the core of this wine is Sauvignon Blanc, the Musqué, Sémillon, and Viognier add a lot of floral notes and viscosity to this vintage. We captured these wonderful floral notes by fermenting each variety separately in concrete eggs, stainless steel drums, and tanks.

The French oak barrels, in which 10% of the wine aged in, were very lightly toasted to preserve the delicate fruity aromas and provide a creamy texture to the mid-palate of the wine.

Winemaker Description 

This wine’s tart, spiky glints of passion fruit tease the nose amidst all its lemony freshness. With a little air, the passion fruit note grows smoother and fuller. The palate glows in this fruitiness and complements it with creamy richness. It’s lovely and seductive now but sure to get even better.

James Suckling 92 Points | Grapefruit, lemongrass and golden apples on the nose, alongside salted almonds. It’s medium-bodied, cool and mineral, with zesty and reductive undertones. Made in clay vessels.

A racy, flavoursome vintage showing green pineapple, gooseberries and quince on the nose along with a refreshing salinity from ocean spray and kelp. The palate delivers green citrus, lemongrass and litchi, given an edgy textural linearity from flint and oyster shells.

Earthy whites have always been of interest to Guy – Aged on lees, made in alternative vessels, with body and texture. Our White of Earth is made of Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in cool microclimates of the upper Galilee and spontaneously fermented in clay amphora.

White of Earth is bright energetic wine, aromatic with a mouth filling texture. Aromas of exotic fruit, grapefruit, and citrus blossom lift from the glass.A mineral, energetic, full dimension white.

Vineyard

Elkosh Vineyard in the Western Galilee has a sunken vineyard that acts as a cold sink. It provides a great location for growing great whites, with prolonged ripening for extra character and complexity.

Production

The grapes (Sauvignon Blanc) were hand-picked at the end of summer and gently pressed into clay Amphora, where the juice was allowed to ferment spontaneously. The shape of the vessel allowed the yeast to circulate building mouth feel into the wine. The wine was further aged in the terracotta urns for a further six month and was bottled late in the spring.

The 2024 Dissonance shines with a beautiful, complex bouquet of lemon, lime, acacia flower, dried apricots, and a hint of Pecorino cheese. Pear and peach attack on the palate with good richness up front, impeccable balance, and bright acidity upon first sip. A long finish of pear and grapefruit complete this wine that is beautifully integrated from start to finish.

Harvested by hand at night from a little vineyard in the Russian River comes this delightfully fruity yet complex wine. The mouth is full of rich subtropical passion fruit and melon. We achieve this fullness by leaving the juice on lees for an extended period of time building the flavor.
