Winemaker Description

This vintage of our Malbec Clásico is fully representative of Altos Las Hormigas style, as the joyful and fresh expression of Mendoza Malbec. Displaying a bright ruby red color, this wine has a fruity nose of plums and raspberries complemented with herbal notes. 

The first palate shows supple tannins with a balanced acidity that is the secret of its freshness. Notes of crisp red fruits fill the mouth, with a soft texture and a long finish. This is a pleasant wine, ideal to pair with various dishes, from red meats to pasta or grilled vegetables.

Catena Malbec presents a deep violet color with purple reflections. This microclimate blend of four unique vineyards offers intense aromas, soft texture, and concentrated flavor. Deep aromas of ripe red and dark fruits are joined by delicate violet and lavender notes, with traces of vanilla and mocha.

A rich, concentrated mouthfeel is highlighted by flavors of blueberries and blackberries with a touch of leather and cinnamon. The wine has well-integrated tannins, bright acidity, and a flinty minerality that provides exceptional length to the finish.

Pair with roast turkey, grilled steak, salmon, and pasta.

Wine Advocate 92 Points:  The 2021 Q Malbec comes from Altamira and Chacayes and was made with a significant part of full clusters (especially Altamira) and aged mostly in concrete to keep that sense of purity. It has notes of some blue fruit, aromatic herbs and a citrus twist, reminiscent of green tea. It is floral, expressive, perfumed and fine-boned, with a medium-bodied palate where the tannins are fine and there's some grip. 500,000 bottles produced. 92+James Suckling 93 Points:  A spicy malbec with a touch of fine herbs, oyster sauce and dark minerals to the fresh blueberries. Wine & Spirits Magazine 93 Points:  A selection from vineyards in Vista Flores and La Consulta, this wine is fun and zesty, focusing on malbec’s fresher side with wild blueberry flavors and violet scents. Bright red color with intense violet hues. Fresh nose of violets and rich plum marmalade laced with chocolate and vanilla oak flavors. A soft, sweet entry leads to a well-structured and long, persistent wine. Round, silky tannins.

Joaquin Hidalgo writes:  The 2022 Malbec Felino is 55% from the Uco Valley and 45% from Lujan de Cuyo. Only 7% of the wine was aged for up to six months in barrels. The 2022 has a rich, purple hue. The nose features dark and red fruit, including blackberry, plum and floral and jammy notes. The palate is creamy and expansive, with a juicy, fresh character and plenty of flavors before the lasting, plush, fruity finish.  - Vinous 91

James Suckling 91 Points | Blackberries and blueberries on the nose, followed by a spicy undertone and some cocoa powder. A very subtle, gamy edge, too. Medium to full body with lots of dusty tannins on the palate, following through to a long finish. Some cocoa powder at the end.

This hand harvested, 100% Malbec wine is from multiple vineyards in the Uco Valley. The wine predominantly shows notes of coffee, blueberry, and chocolate with secondary notes of licorice, black cherry, cinnamon, baking spices, and sage.

The complexity of the wine extends into the palate by being big and bold without being flabby, with smooth tannins and light acidity. The wine finishes extremely strong with plum, cassis, doughnut cake, and fine silky tannins. A wine that out delivers it’s price by tenfold!

Cuma Malbec is NOP certified organic. Terroir: Sourced entirely from estate vineyards high in Argentina’s northwest Andes. This extreme elevation lends itself perfectly to organic viticulture. Hot days, cool nights, lack of rainfall and a dry shallow soil allow for minimal human interference to the natural growth cycle of the vines. Vinification: All organic practices are carried over from vineyard to winery where the wines are carefully handled throughout the entire vinification process.

Cuma is produced to be drunk young, therefore little oak is used in the winery; instead the wines are aged at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks in an effort to showcase their natural complexity and deep fruit flavors.

Sharp, lively red with violet hues. Intense legs reflect the wine structure, dying the glass like shiny cherries. Aromas of plum marmalade typical of Malbec combine with raisins, vanilla and hints of rosemary. Fruity on the palate, soft with pleasantly sweet tannins

Winemaker Description 

Fourth generation winemaker Federico Benegas Lynch was born and raised in the El Trapiche winery, where from a young age, his father had taught him how to blind taste wines. When he grew older, he went on to study with some of the best winemakers at wineries around the world. In 1999, under the guidance of Angel Mendoza, Trapiche’s head winemaker, Federico repurchased the old vineyard (Finca Libertad) that had belonged to his family, and was planted by Don Tiburcio. The following year, Federico bought a nineteenth century winery, outfitted it with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment, and began producing wines under the Bodega Benegas label. In 2010, Bodega Benegas acquired Finca La Encerrada, located in Gualtallary, Tupungato in Uco Valley; perched at over 4500 feet above sea level, the vineyard is among Mendoza’s highest altitude vineyards. It yields elegant wines of intense color, with pronounced fruity and floral aromatics and remarkable texture, due in large part to the exceptional climate and soil conditions.

Tasting Notes

The first attack of the taste of the wine is sweet, with bright notes of pineapple and peach. The second wave of taste is marked by delicate citrus notes and invigorating acidity, resulting in a perfect balance of freshness and sweetness. Light, aromatic aftertaste.

In terms of quality and price, this is arguably the best 'Bordeaux blend' in our portfolio, made by a winemaker who is passionate about the wines of his French cousins but still proudly Argentine. 50% Malbec, 20% Cab Franc, 20% Cab Sauv, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot.

A nose of black fruits, spices, white pepper, clove, cardamon, eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary - complex in other words, with a fantastic finish.

Federico Benegas Lynch was raised at ‘El Trapiche’, a winery established in 1883 by his great, great grandfather, Don Tiburcio Benegas, one of the original pioneers of Argentine wine. The winery was finally sold in the 1970s and in 1998, following a successful business career in Buenos Aires, Federico returned to Mendoza to re-kindle his lifelong passion and professional destiny, wine. He bought Finca La Libertad, an historic 40-hectare vineyard with ‘soils’ of stone on the old Upper Mendoza riverbank in Cruz de Piedra, and the old winery that belonged to his mother’s family which he quickly set about refurbishing. His idea was based on the traditional French Châteaux system, where proprietorship of vineyard and winery are inextricably linked.

James Suckling 95 Points | Super saturated from the color to the flavors and finish, this wine shows how concentrated and layered a malbec can be. The color is dark to the rim, the aromas boast blueberries, dark cherries and creme de cassis, and the flavors layer black fruit over spearmint, cocoa and graphite nuances. Full-bodied, firmly tannic and balanced for many more years of improvement. Best from 2028.

Vinous 93 Points | The 2022 Malbec Bramare Valle de Uco blends grapes from a selection of vineyards across the Uco Valley. Twenty percent was aged for up to 18 months in oak barrels, while the remaining 80% was kept in tank. This purple-hued wine features notes of wet stone, black fruit, mint and blueberry, complemented by a fine layer of light oak. It is broad, smooth and concentrated on the palate, with a juicy mouthfeel that showcases wood nuances and a long, fruity finish. This lovely vintage balances concentration with freshness.

Wine Spectator 90 Points | There's a decent amount of oak, but this red wears it well, offering a chocolaty cast offset by fresh Santa Rosa plum and raspberry flavors with a slight graphite bite. Finishes with savory and mocha notes around plush tannins. Drink now through 2034.
