Crafted by Greg Brewer. Diatom is a project defined by "subtraction." He removes everything that usually masks Chardonnay—oak barrels, malolactic fermentation (the buttery stuff), and aging—leaving only the pure, electric soul of the grape.
The "Diatom" Name: It refers to diatomaceous earth, the plankton fossil-rich soil found in Santa Barbara. The wine is designed to taste like the soil and the sea.

Sonoma Coast Chardonnay: Decoy LIMITED by Duckhorn Vineyards
Expert Review - Vintage 2023
James Suckling 93 Points | A ripe but balanced wine with plenty of golden apple and Bartlett pear flavors on a smooth, buttery texture. Some green apple acidity brightens up the ripeness, lifting vanilla bean, toast and butterscotch nuances. Full-bodied.
Winemaker Description
Building on our rich winemaking heritage, we invite you to experience Decoy Limited wines. Crafted using grapes from some of the most acclaimed California vineyard sources, including our own estate properties, these wines showcase the pinnacle of Decoy winemaking.
The 2023 growing season started with a cool, wet winter, followed by a moderate spring, which delayed budbreak and bloom across several regions. Some vineyards were two to four weeks behind typical schedules, creating a unique timeline for harvest. Our team began picking in mid-September, progressing steadily from northern to southern blocks, with full harvest underway by October. A series of warm spells helped push the grapes to peak ripeness. Careful vineyard practices, including strategic leafing and crop adjustments, were essential this year, resulting in red wines with deep color and intensity, and white wines with fresh aromatics and lively acidity.
Memo Summary Notes
The Decoy LIMITED by Duckhorn Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2023 represents the "elevated" tier of the popular Decoy brand. While the standard Decoy Chardonnay uses grapes from across California, the Limited label focuses strictly on the cooler, high-quality maritime vineyards of the Sonoma Coast, resulting in a wine with more precision, depth, and structural complexity.
The balance of creaminess and acidity makes it an ideal companion for:
-
Seafood: Dungeness crab with drawn butter, lobster rolls, or seared scallops.
-
Rich Mains: Roasted chicken with a cream-and-mushroom sauce or Fettuccine Alfredo.
-
Vegetarian: Roasted squash with sage butter or truffle-infused mushroom risotto.
Rich Flavors and Aroma
The Decoy LIMITED Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2023 delivers a rich and vibrant flavor profile, making it an exceptional choice for wine enthusiasts. This Chardonnay is celebrated for its bright notes of green apple, pear, and citrus. Because of its balanced acidity and mouthfeel, it pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Whether enjoyed on its own or with food, this wine promises to enhance any occasion.
Terroir-Driven Excellence
What sets Sonoma Coast Chardonnay apart is its distinctive terroir. The grapes are sourced from the picturesque Sonoma Coast, which allows for a unique blend of cool coastal breezes and sunny days. This results in grapes that produce a complex wine, with layers of flavor that develop beautifully. However, the winemakers at Duckhorn Vineyards have mastered the art of presenting these characteristics in a bottle, providing an experience that truly reflects the region’s essence.
Perfect Pairing for Food Lovers
If you're looking to elevate your dining experience, the Decoy LIMITED Chardonnay is an excellent choice. It pairs wonderfully with seafood, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta dishes. Many enjoy it with lighter fare, as it complements the flavors without overwhelming them. So, whether hosting a dinner party or relaxing at home, this wine is versatile enough to suit any palate, bringing joy to the table.

A fascinating play of light fruit and dark spice is finished with a bright squeeze of orange peel.
Menage A Trois RED Blend 2023 750ml
Winemaker Description
Ménage à Trois Red Blend brings together three strange bedfellows: Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. James Suckling 92 Points | A creamy and flavorful chardonnay, offering white peaches, raw walnuts, lemon rind and melon. Rich but clean and textured, with medium to full body and delicious stone fruit in the middle. Tense, juicy finish
Winemaker Description
The 2023 vintage could be the vintage of the decade. It is among the coolest growing seasons in Napa Valley in the past ten-plus years, resulting in wines that are exceptionally flavorful, expressive, and have strong potential to age for decades to come.
This Chardonnay presents a complex bouquet with enticing aromas of ripe melon, honeysuckle, and juicy peach, complemented by delicate hints of citrus blossoms.
The name KARIA (KAR-ee-ah) is derived from the Greek word meaning graceful, and the 2023 KARIA Chardonnay lives up to its moniker. It shows how grapes from select cool-climate vineyards in southern Napa Valley can be vinified and blended into a seamless integration of fresh-fruit aromas and flavors, crisp acidity and subtle oak spice. Light and graceful: that’s KARIA.
KARIA comes from a tapestry of vineyards in the southern part of Napa Valley. For the 2023 vintage, vineyards in the Atlas Peak District (42%), Carneros (35%), Arcadia (14%) and Bravo Zulu (8%) contributed fruit for this wine. The vineyards in Carneros (Beckster Las Amigas and Carneros Creek), which are cooled in the mornings and evenings by breezes sweeping north from San Pablo Bay, contribute citrus and mineral notes to the wine. ARCADIA VINEYARD brings perfume and delicate fruit characters. The Oak Knoll vineyards (Bravo Zulu) provide bright, juicy apple and pear personality to the blend. Atlas Peak fruit adds a lemon/lime citrus character and a richer mouthfeel. The grapes for this wine were picked early in the morning to keep them cool and then they were whole cluster pressed to preserve freshness. Oak and malolactic fermentation were used in moderation to accent, rather than overwhelm, the fruit.

Ours is not a buttery, oaky Chard. It sees no malolactic fermentation and no oak so you get a dry and bright palate that is fruit forward and built for food. The nose is fresh and bright with orchard fruit aromas and a touch of smoke and flint. Lush notes of ripe pear and apple blend with mouthwatering acidity to give backbone and verve.
Savvy, succulent, salubrious and scintillating sums up our oak-less Chardonnay. Just picked apples, wildflowers and apricots fill your senses. Flavors of young peaches, juicy pineapple, citrus, white figs and hints of flint lace your palate. Complex, balanced and ready for a party of one or one hundred.
The high acidity and lack of oak make this a highly versatile food wine:
-
Spicy Cuisine: Excellent with Thai green curry or General Tso’s chicken, as the fruitiness cuts through the heat.
-
Seafood: Raw bar favorites like oysters and clams, or grilled trout with lemon.
-
Vegetarian: Pairs beautifully with roasted root vegetables, asparagus risotto, or kale salads with lemon tahini dressing.

Expert Reviews - Vintage 2023
The Wine Enthusiast by Tonya Pitts writes 92 Points | The aromas of freshly baked brioche are captivating, giving way to yellow plum, bruléed orange slices and notes of Elderflower honey on the nose. The flavors on the palate are sugared lemon rind, baked pear, Pink Lady apple with yeasty medium mousse and a mineral dry finish.
Winemaker Description
The 2023 vintage reflects the distinct influence of a cooler growing season, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop nuanced flavors. On the nose, expect vibrant aromas of bright citrus, freshly plucked apples and delicate white jasmine.
On the palate, stone fruit notes are met with rich undertones of vanilla and clove, harmonized with warm spice and a touch of oak-derived toastiness. The interplay between the oak and fruit brings a balanced finish, with higher toasty notes lingering gracefully.”

Gold Medal San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, 2025
Gold Medal Pacific Rim Int'l Wine Competition, 2025
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage presented ideal growing conditions for our Chardonnay, resulting in an exceptional expression of this varietal. A long, mild growing season allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness while maintaining vibrant acidity. This was a great year for ZD’s 55th harvest producing world class wines!
Organically certified grapes from three core appellations (Napa and Sonoma Carneros, and Monterey) were hand harvested at night and 100% barrel fermented in our custom-designed cellar room at a cool 48°F. This long, cool fermentation ensures optimal lees contact for richness and depth, and helps to prevent malolactic fermentation, thus preserving the bright natural acidity from our coastal vineyard sites. The wine rested for 10 months in 100% American Oak barrels which contributes to a heightened complexity.
This Chardonnay displays a pale-yellow hue hinting at a delight for your senses. Aromas bursting of ripe Asian pear, green apple, honeydew melon, and pink grapefruit mingled with nectarine notes. The palate follows through with a distinct richness of lemon curd and balanced flavors of guava with white peach. The acidity in this wine is mouthwatering. In ZD’s signature California Chardonnay style, the wine is vibrant, complex, and finishes with flavors reminiscent of crème brûlée and vanillin notes, resulting in a long-lasting mouthfeel.
Memo Summary Notes
The ZD Wines Chardonnay 2023 is a quintessential California Chardonnay, often described as "sunshine in a glass." Unlike the Au Bon Climat you were looking at, ZD leans into a riper, more opulent style while still avoiding malolactic fermentation to keep the acidity crisp
