Jesica Vargas of the Wine Enthusiast writes 90 Points | Carménère loves Peumo, a subregion in Cachapoal Valley. Here the grape can fully ripen and make wines that have a balanced bouquet and palate. This red has light notes of berries on the nose. Finely grained tannins and good acidity hold cherry flavors mixed with dried basil. 

Winemaker Description

Great color intensity. On the nose it expresses with splendid force the character of the Carménère variety, (berries, eucalyptus and leather), with notes of roasting -laurel and clove-, liquorice and pepper black. Great amplitude in the mouth and round tannins. Retronasal aromas of toasted bread and spices, ending in a long aftertaste.

This great wine is the ideal companion for roast lamb or pig as well as meats cooked over coals and spiced with aromatic herbs and licorice.

Château La Vaisinerie — Puisseguin Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux 2019

Puisseguin Saint-Émilion is one of Bordeaux's four Saint-Émilion satellites — appellations that share the Saint-Émilion name and its clay-limestone terroir, but offer wines of genuine character at a fraction of the price of their more famous neighbor. Château La Vaisinerie is a standout estate in the appellation, producing a Merlot-dominant blend (90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc) that earned four separate critic endorsements in the 2019 vintage — one of Bordeaux's finest of the last decade. The 2019 pours a deep ruby. The nose is expressive and layered — blue fruits, blackberry, black cherry, candied violets, sweet tobacco, crushed stones, and floral notes with a mineral undertow. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, pure, and impeccably balanced: supple tannins, fine acidity, a pretty core of fruit, and a sensual, velvety-smooth finish. Winemaker's Story

"The Flying Bicycle" is Germán Blanco's new project in Rioja Baja. With the help of fellow oenologist Javier Collio, Germán sources fruit from certified organic vineyards in the Navarra part of the appellation. The vineyards are dry-farmed with an average age of thirty-five years, grown in a mix of clay and limestone. Following the Milú philosophy of "happy wines made from happy grapes," the grapes are de-stemmed and fermented at cold temperature from native yeasts. A slight maceration before the end of fermentation creates a delicate and fresh wine. No oak is used, and the wine stays in concrete tanks for five to six months.

Earthy crushed raspberry and pencil shaving aromas follow through on a soft, satiny entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with a delicate touch of spice and crabapple. Finishes in lingering spiced poached apple, mineral, and wet cedar fade with lightly pithy tannins.

Winemaker Description

Zippy raspberries lead the palate, minerality becomes present after. It finishes with smooth tannins that coat your tongue so softly you barely notice them. Light to medium bodied.

Nose of black fruit and spices and wood. Little tannin, light-med delicate body, lots of cheery and raspberry and finishes spicy and woody with a bit of acid that matches perfectly with the fatty carnitas.

Gordon, who is self-taught, began learning about wine in the 1980s just as Kevin Zraly started to educate America on the world of wine.
