This Merlot offers notes of raspberry croissant, red currants, cocoa powder, and layers of graphite. Syrah Laide translates loosely to Pretty-Ugly, a French term of endearment to describe something that is unconventionally beautiful, a dogma that is applied to each cuvée. "Hawks Butte adds slightly more density and fruit while still wildly fresh with lithe tannin and Halcon compliments with brooding structure. Violet, camphor, white pepper and cedar" - Jolie-Laide 100% Syrah, grapes were planted on two vineyards (Halcon and Hawkes Butte) both at high elevation. 

Grapes are left on stems, crushed by foot and fermented with very light punch downs. The juice is then placed into neutral oak for 10 months. 12-25ppm added SO2 depending on vintage and cuvée.

Viña Ardanza is the crown jewel of La Rioja Alta — and the 2019 vintage may be its finest expression in a generation. A blend of 80% old-vine Tempranillo from Fuenmayor and Cenicero in Rioja Alta and 20% Garnacha from Tudelilla in Rioja Oriental, the wine is aged 36 months in American oak for the Tempranillo and 30 months for the Garnacha — all from La Rioja Alta’s own cooperage. No 2018 was produced; 2019 marks a pivotal change in Ardanza: more fresh fruit from the Garnacha, less spice, and a modern intensity that recalls the legendary 2015. Jeb Dunnuck awarded it 96 points. Wine Advocate and Decanter each gave it 94. At under $40, it is one of the most compelling values in all of classic Rioja.

Intense cherry red with garnet at the rim. Blaufränkisch, also known as Lemberger, is a beautiful varietal full of fruit and spice! 

There's a reason this vineyards been winning awards. On the nose I get cassis with some rubber and a definite minerality. Some herbal notes are hiding in the background. The palate brings forth licorice and black raspberry with those currants. There's a slight jammy quality with great acid and some beautifully lingering tannins.
