Jonathan Cristaldi writes:  The 2019 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet shows a deep, ruby colour. It is a beautifully compact wine that delivers complex and nuanced aromas of Bing cherry and black raspberry with tobacco, currant leaf, and cedarwood laced with dried sage. Focused and linear on the medium to full-bodied palate, showing expressive dark berry character and exotic oak spices with a firm backbone of fine-grained structured tannins. Cool raspberry, cherry, and blackberry fruit are perfectly represented, and the lengthy finish is crisp, lively, and energetic. No doubt, this is one to cellar. Exhaustive oak seasoning experiments led by winemaker Nate Weis resulted in the discovery that the American oak they age Silver Oak in when seasoned for 24 months and toasted for 90 minutes, marks the point at which the oak imparts more vanillin character and delivers better tannin integration. By contrast, the 2018 vintage was aged in American oak, seasoned for 16 months and toasted for 60 minutes. Weis explains that their experiments showed that underseasoned American oak imparts a dill character, while overseasoning results in coconutty notes, but finding a sweet spot delivers that vanillian quality winemakers look for in French oak. Taste the 2018 and 2019s side by side if you can, and note the subtle differences and shift to a more savoury profile in the 2019 vintage, with a very precise integration of oak tannin. James Suckling 93 Points: A fragrant red with a timid nose of blue fruit, dried herbs and some crushed stones and raspberries. Tightly wound and medium- to full-bodied with tender red fruit. Very compact, with an elegant rigidity that is very appealing. Pure Sangiovese from a single vineyard in Radda in Chianti, which is one of the highest villages in Chianti Classico. This is already drinkable, but I would love to revisit it in a couple of years.

The Wine Spectator 89 Points | Balsamic aromas and flavors of tomato leaf and eucalyptus frame the cherry and berry fruit in this dense, solidly built red. Though perhaps just closed now, overall this falls a little short on the earthy finish. Best from 2026 through 2038. 7,500 cases made, 325 cases imported.

James Suckling 94 Points |  Fresh strawberries and cherries with some orange peel and flowers. Cedar, black olive and violet undertones. Medium-bodied with firm and racy tannins that give energy and focus. Tangy and fresh with slightly bitter citrus on the palate at the end. 90% sangiovese and 10% merlot. Drink or hold.

Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate 92 Points | The organic Tenuta Sette Ponti 2022 Crognolo is a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. The wine has a core of blackened fruit with plum and cooked blackberry, but it also shows varietal hints of Sangiovese, with pressed rose and sweet potting soil. It finishes with medium texture, some fruity freshness and more black fruit flavors. This wine (with 150,000 bottles made) represents a selection of fruit from a historic clone of Sangiovese found here. 

Antonio Galloni of Vinous 92 Points | The 2022 Crognolo is a fine entry-level offering from Sette Ponti. Dark, vibrant and persistent, the 2022 races across the palate with dark-fleshed fruit, chocolate, licorice, cloves, menthol and licorice. I especially admire its energy. Grippy tannins support the finish nicely. 

The Wine Spectator 91 Points |  Black cherry, blackberry, lavender and spice aromas and flavors signal this dense red, which is tight and compact, yet has plenty of fruit and a well-integrated structure. Fine length. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2038.

Layered aromas appear from first sniff: plump currants and plums, dark chocolate, savory herbs and florals, graphite and a mineral, iodine-like nuance. In the mouth, there's bright fruit and silky texture, with savory, fine tannins and a long, elegant finish. Made to drink now or to age for several more years. A wonderful intro to this distinctive Aussie style.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous writes 93 Points | The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva II Grigio da San Felice is a dark, dense, rather somber wine. Black cherry, leather, tobacco, incense and dried herbs reinforce that initial impression. A Riserva of substance and power, the 2021 has a ton to offer. It's an especially fine edition of II Grigio.

Tamlyn Currin writes:  This is utterly scrumptious. It's an arpeggio of sweet, audaciously ripe, red-berried, violet-flushed fruit that soars through the glass. Untrammelled freshness. The fruit is the flautist of the vineyard. Dauntlessly about the fruit but at the same time it's not speciously 'fruity'. It's complex. The tannins are silky but have fine-powdered chalky grip. There is spice, a little liquorice bark and a whisper of leafiness – that sort of green-purple petalled velvetiness of woodland violets. Barolo Berri comes from a vineyard at the extreme west border of the Barolo area, with an altitude between 370 and 430 mts asl (1200 -1400 ft). Our Barolo Berri doesn’t want to stand out for complexity or longevity, but for drinkability and immediacy, due to its inner fruit profile, sweet ripeness and freshness. Like any Barolo, it is certainly suitable for long ageing but, in our opinion, this wine can be consumed right after the release with extreme pleasure.

96 Points Vinous | Nicola and Stefania Oberto may very well put Berri on the map with their 2020 Barolo Berri. What a wine. Deep, soaring and wonderfully expressive, the 2020 is stunning in its beauty. Dark red/purplish fruit, orange peel, cinnamon, rose petal and lavender are all amplified in a vertical, soaring Barolo of magnificent intensity. Silky, polished tannins round things out in style. The 2020 is pure and sensual to the core - a total pleasure bomb. (2020).

94 Points Jeb Dunnuck | There is already a wonderful balance in the 2020 Barolo Berri, with both vertical drive and rounded fruits, including red berries and spiced red plums. It has ripe tannins and a generous feel, with a spine of fresh acidity raising it to another level. Drink 2026-2040.

The Wine Advocate - 92 Points: An impressive value for an Oakville AVA Cabernet, Groth's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is a bit reticent and slow out of the chute, but aeration brings out nice aromas of black cherries and subtle cedar notes. A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, it's medium- to full-bodied but streamlined and silky, showing impressive length and elegance for the vintage. The new-oak component comes in at 45%, imparting just enough structure to ensure a decade's worth of drinkability.

James Suckling - 92 Points: This young wine is impressively concentrated, tannic and tight at this stage of its development, but it carries the proper amount of dark fruit, dark chocolate and heady oak spices to gain complexity with age.

The 2022 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant wine that presents a deep, purple-ruby hue. It offers an elegant bouquet on the nose, with layers, of toffee, blueberry pie, and raspberry compote, complemented by delicate vanilla bean, macerated cranberry, and shortcrust pastry. Herbal notes of bay leaf and tarragon add complexity, enhancing the wine’s refined character. 

On the palate, vibrant flavors of cherry reduction sauce, tart red plum, wild cherry, and fresh strawberry come to the forefront, while hints of dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and fresh pomegranate juice bring depth and intrigue.

Vinous 90 Points | The 2023 Barbera d'Alba is a boisterous, juicy wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Vinification and aging in a combination of cement and steel keeps the red-toned fruit wonderfully vibrant. Lifted floral notes linger on the close.

The Wine Enthusiast 94 Points | This deep-ruby-colored wine offers aromas of black cherry, caramel and thyme. Flavors of blackberry, raspberry, licorice, dark chocolate and orange zest are wrapped up in feathery tannins and a soft sheath of acidity. There is a nice floral note on the bright finish. 

The Wine Advocate 91 Points | The 2017 Reserva is surprisingly clean and fresh for such a year; perhaps it is the beginning of a change, as the 2018 also showed a similar profile, different from the wines from previous vintages. It's peppery and spicy, with some toasty notes. It's 70% Tempranillo, 17% Garnacha and 13% Mazuelo that matured in 225- and 500-liter (5%) French oak barrels for 23 months.

Eleven small, independent family-owned vineyard sites come together in this gorgeous display of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. This blend displays classic coastal traits of lively fruit graced with. Complex and inviting aromas of red fruits include Morello cherry and wild strawberry. A warm spice mix of cinnamon, clove, anise and coriander accompanies subtle notes of forest floor and pink flowers. The palate is full and finishes with good purity supported by refined tannins and fresh acidity. This 2020 offering is a lovely expression capturing the elegance and purity that are hallmarks of Pinot Noir at its best.

Best of all, this is a terrific value.

Decanter 94 Points | With fine-weave tannins, full of energy. Riecine is renowned for the cult of perfectionism which has been handed down through a succession of owners. The trait comes to the fore in challenging vintages such as 2023, when continual rain through May and June caused widespread disease, and the month of August saw days of baking heat. Riecine responded with a wine of elegance. Impeccable.

Vinous by Antonio Galloni writes 91 Points | The 2023 Chianti Classico is terrific. Aromatic, light on its feet and super-expressive, the 2023 is a total delight. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of vibrant red Sangiovese fruit in this midweight, gracious offering.   

The Wine Advocate by Monica Larner writes 90 Points | Made with 100% Sangiovese, the Riecine 2023 Chianti Classico shows ripe cherry and a hint of strawberry that is in line with a challenging vintage that saw heat and lots of rain (with yields dropped by as much as 40% at this estate). There is some richness with added concentration in terms of mouthfeel. The 2023 is plumper overall and best enjoyed in the near term.

The certified organic vineyards cover 20 hectares in Gaiole in Chianti at different altitudes, exposures and soil types. All wines are artisanally crafted from hand-sorted grapes that are crushed by foot and fermented with native yeasts in small, concrete fermentors. 

The Riecine Chianti Classico is made from 100% Sangiovese from different vineyard sites throughout Gaiole in Chianti. Mid ruby in the glass with aromas of cranberry and sour cherry interspersed with a strong mineral note.

The wine travels over the palate with an elegant and velvety texture. Juicy and expansive in style, offering well-concentrated red and blue fruit flavors and a touch of cracked pepper. Creamy tannins sneak in late and add a gentle grip to a long, spice- and floral-driven finish. All de-stemmed fruit and raised in concrete tanks.

Jeb Dunnuck writes 92 Points |  Not yet bottled, the 2020 Gigondas offers more dark fruits as well as masculine notes of ground pepper, crushed stone, and sappy garrigue. Medium to full-bodied and nicely structured, it’s another rock-solid wine from this estate. The blend is 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, destemmed, and aged in concrete tank.

Producer Description 

Intense, brilliant garnet color. On the nose, aromas of garrigue develop alongside spices and black fruits. Fleshy and dense palate, with notes of jam, ripe fruit, and spices.

The Domain: The history of Mas des Restanques began in 1995 with the union of our two family lands. After several years in a cooperative cellar, we took the plunge, created our own cellar, and released our 1st vintage in 2007.

We began orienting the domain towards Organic agriculture in 2009 and were certified by "Ecocert" in 2012. In 2019, our son Philippe joined us on the estate to continue the tradition while bringing new perspectives to the business. As a family, we put all our efforts into vine cultivation in order to offer consumers the best grape sources. Then, the low yields on clay soils limestone, thoughtful work of the harvest, and the development of our wines bring to our cuvées character, strength, and balance.

Jeb Dunnuck writes:  Moving to the reds, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is one of the riper, broader, sexier wines in the vintage. Blackberries, roasted herbs, cured meats, chocolate, and Provençal garrigue all define the aromatics, and it’s full-bodied on the palate, with a powerful yet balanced style. Classic cuvées don’t get much better than this in 2020. It will keep for 10-15 years. Neal Martin of Vinous writes 94+ Points | The 2022 Gloria was picked from 12-26 September and matured in 40% new oak, slightly less than the Saint-Pierre. It has a perfumed, floral nose with crushed violet infusing the black cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sumptuous tannins that belie the structure underneath. With pure fruit and well-judged acidity, this 2022 is sensual with a persistent and lightly spiced finish. Superb.

Harvested between September 14 and 26, with yields of 34 hectoliters per hectare, it offers an inky purple hue to go with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, spicy oak, and graphite. Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points | An undeniable star in Margaux, the 2022 Château Brane-Cantenac checks in as a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 1% each Cabernet Franc, Carménère, and Petit Verdot. This deep purple-hued beauty offers up a sensational perfume of darker currants and cassis that gives way to more floral, spicy oak and graphite nuances with air. With flawless overall balance, ripe, velvety tannins, terrific purity, and a great finish, this riveting Brane-Cantenac already offers pleasure, yet I wouldn't be surprised to see this firm up with 4-5 years of bottle age, only to reemerge later and drink beautifully for 30+ years. It's one of the truly greats in the appellation, and readers will love to have this beauty in the cellar.

Decanter 98 Points | Crushed velvet smoothness and almost weightless purity. Gorgeous aromatics – wild flowers, bramble fruit and soft cinnamon. Bright berry fruit, salty mineral touches and a hint of liquorice create charm and depth. This exudes Margaux elegance with bounce, finesse and fleshiness. Already so enjoyable but built to develop further. An utterly delicious wine that captures the essence of the vintage.

Jane Anson 98 Points | Deep plum colour, touch of grilled campfire smoke on the aromatics, good lift through the finish, this is so enjoyable, clearly skilled and full of joy. One of the wines of the vintage, totally delivers on En Primeur beauty. 

Winemaker

Chateau Brane-Cantenac was for many years the home of Lucien Lurton - it is now owned and run by his son Henri. Its vineyards are located west of the village of Cantenac in the Margaux appellation. Brane-Cantenac's vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (4.5%), and Carmenere 0,5%, and lie on fine, gravelly soils. Vinification includes up to 18 months of wood ageing, a third to a half in new 'barriques'.

Enchanting and complex nose of red fruit, tobacco leaf, licorice and delicate spices. Super-sensual palate that’s rich and refined, with so many nuances that you could spend hours studying it. The Wine Advocate by Joe Czerwinsk 89-91 Points | Tasted as a hypothetical blend taken from several foudres, the 2020 Bandol should be about 70% Mourvèdre and 25% Grenache, with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. At this stage, it comes across as a bit stern and ungenerous, despite ample ripe notes of black cherries and dark chocolate. It's full-bodied, finishing with a hefty dose of dusty tannins.

Provence, France. Organic. Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsualt, Syrah, Carignan. Gives up classic leather, garrigue, underbrush and sweet black raspberry notes on the nose. Medium-bodied, supple, sexy and with fine tannin, it’s a forward, ready to go beauty to drink over the coming 5-7 years.

We first drank this Cote-du-Rhone at one of our favorite local restaurants Manny’s Bistro where I am addicted to the Magret de Canard (duck breast) and Dorothy loves the mussels Marinieres and Provencal. This medium bodied Rhone is fruit forward without being overwhelmed by the fruit, balanced acidity allows it to work with both the duck and the mussels and more it just is quaffable, happily we stroll home (-:

This wine expresses forest floor fruit. Blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry round out the velvet balanced structure and in her finesse. Cooper Mountain is a pioneering winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, established on the outskirts of Portland in the late 1970’s.

In 1978 Dr. Robert Gross and his wife Corrine planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the slopes of Cooper Mountain, west of Portland. In 1987, the family converted an old horse barn on the property to start their own label, becoming early adopters to organic and Biodynamic farming practices in Oregon winemaking by the early 1990’s.

"Our role as stewards of our 200 acres is a vital part of our process. Cooper Mountain has always been a trailblazer in sustainable growing, receiving organic certification from Oregon Tilth in 1995. Vinous 91 Points  The 2023 Malbec Aruma is sourced from El Peral and Los Chacayes in the Uco Valley. This warm 2023 vintage was balanced by an early harvest, resulting in a subtly lighter palate. After spending a winter on the fine lees, this vibrant Malbec showcases intense purple hues, with pristine notes of fresh herbs, violet, cherry and plum. Juicy and expressive, it features fine tannins and lively fruit flavors, making it an energetic and primary wine. 

James Suckling 91 Points | An honest and fruit-driven malbec that shows plump fruit and violet character. Fine-grained tannins on the fruity palate, with a fleshy core of ripe, concentrated purple fruit in the middle. Still fresh and pristine in finish full of fruit.

Memo Summary Notes

The Bodegas Caro "Aruma" Malbec 2023 is a prestigious collaboration between two of the world's most famous winemaking families: Domaine Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) from France and the Catena family from Argentina. The name Aruma means "night" in the native Quechua language, referring to the cool mountain nights of the Andes.

The perfect "Bistro" wine. Pairs beautifully with grilled skirt steak (Carne Asada), lamb sliders, or a hearty charcuterie board. Its high acidity also makes it a great match for tomato-based pasta dishes or empanadas.

93 Points The Wine Enthusiast by Michael Alberty | Made with certified biodynamic fruit from Johan Vineyard, the wine opens up with a beautiful perfume of dried rose petals, jasmine, lavender and boysenberries. Firm tannins and electric fence acidity corral flavors of tart cherries, blood orange segments and balsa wood. Enjoy now until 2036. 

James Suckling 93 Points | Crisp and bright, this Oregon pinot has stacks of sour cherry fruit with a touch of half-ripe strawberries. That fits well with the restrained, moderately dry tannins and the lively acidity that stays this light on its feet on the medium-bodied palate. Long, positively grainy finish.

94 Points Decanter, Clive Pursehouse: Well done, indeed. From the Demeter-certified biodynamic site in the Willamette Valley, south of McMinnville, Johan Vineyard comes a classically Oregon Pinot Noir. Rich umami-driven aromas of turned earth, smoky violets, and ripe stewed strawberries are lifted by notes of evergreen tips and mint. The palate shows fresh red and black bramble fruits, a touch of grip, savory chicory root, and a finish that shows black tea and wild anise.

Vinous 90 Points | The 2021 Pinot Noir Johan Vineyard is nuanced and delicate in the glass, wafting up with hints of dried black cherries, sage and dusty rose. This is cool-toned and racy within, with sleek textures and ripe red berry fruits that swirl across a stream of lively acidity. Winemaker Notes

Johan Vineyard is an 85-acre, Demeter-certified biodynamic site in the Willamette Valley, south of McMinnville and west of Salem. This site is almost always our last Pinot pick of harvest. Although it's a relatively low-elevation site, due to its proximity to the coast and the winds that howl through the Van Duzer Corridor every summer afternoon, the fruit here tends to ripen later than in our other vineyards. It is primarily marine sediment soils, and the benefit of biodynamic farming is completely apparent when one stands in this healthy and alive place. Our Johan Pinot Noir always displays a lovely, deep red berry core allied to a beguiling spice component that makes for a classic southern Willamette profile. The tannins and acids in this wine are typically strident in their youth, indicating a long and fulfilling life in the cellar.
