Pheasant's Tears Kisi 2024 Organic 750ml
Pheasant's Tears | Kisi | Qvevri Amber Wine | Kakheti, Republic of Georgia | 2024 | Organic
Pheasant's Tears is one of Georgia's most celebrated natural wine producers, founded by Gela Patalishvili — an 8th-generation winemaker from the Kakheti region — and John Wurdeman, an American painter who fell in love with Georgia and its ancient wine culture in 1998. Together, they have dedicated themselves to preserving and reviving Georgia's extraordinary 8,000-year-old winemaking heritage, farming around ten indigenous grape varieties without pesticides or herbicides and vinifying everything in qvevri — traditional clay amphorae buried in the earth, used in Georgia since the Neolithic era.
Kisi is a rare and ancient Georgian white grape variety grown almost exclusively in the Kakheti region, in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. At Pheasant's Tears, it is vinified in the traditional Georgian manner: fermented and aged in qvevri with extended skin maceration of six months — producing what Georgians call an "amber wine" and the rest of the world has come to know as "orange wine." The result is a wine of extraordinary depth, texture, and complexity that has no real equivalent in the conventional wine world.
The 2024 Kisi is deep amber-gold in the glass. The nose is captivating — dried apricot, quince, honey, beeswax, dried flowers, and a hint of walnut, with an earthy, almost ancient quality that speaks directly to the qvevri. On the palate, unusually powerful structure with grippy, polished tannins — rare in a white wine — balanced by bright acidity and a long, complex, spiced finish. Not aggressive, but deeply serious. A wine that transports you elsewhere entirely.
Made from certified organic grapes. Pair with spiced lamb, charcuterie, aged Parmesan, old Comté, washed-rind cheeses, roasted root vegetables, and dishes with Middle Eastern or Caucasian spice profiles.

Umathum Zweigelt Rotburger Classic 2022 750ml
Winemaker Description & Memo Notes
The Umathum Zweigelt Rotburger Classic 2022 is a standout example of Austria’s most-planted red grape. Produced by Josef "Pepi" Umathum, a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture in the Burgenland region, this wine is celebrated for being "crushable" yet sophisticated.
The name "Rotburger" is used here as a nod to the grape's historical name (Zweigelt is a cross of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent).
Tasting Notes
• Appearance: Deep ruby red with a youthful purple rim.
• Nose: A "cherry bomb" on the nose—expect intense aromas of sour cherry, blackberry, and raspberry, accented by a distinct black pepper spice and a touch of damp earth or flint.
• Palate: Fresh and juicy with medium body. It features vibrant acidity and soft, silky tannins. The palate mirrors the nose with tart red fruit and a savory, spicy finish.
• Structure: Fermented with natural yeasts and aged for one year in large, neutral Austrian oak barrels (foudres) to preserve the purity of the fruit rather than adding heavy oak flavors.
Pepi Umathum is one of Austria's best known producers. In the Burgenland growing district called Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl), he counts as one of the great champions of the traditional Austrian grape varieties. His main holdings are Rotburger (Zweigelt), St Laurent and Blaufrankisch with a bit of Welschriesling, Roter Traminer, the extremely rare Gelber Traminer, and the unusual ancient Lindenblattriger (Harslevelu in Hungary).
Pepi has embraced the intricacies and harmonies of biodynamic viticulture, and for most of his wines, which are all hand-harvested, he prefers to use large barrels of native Austrian oak, which underscores the clear fruit aromatics of the wines. Some of the high-toned single vineyard bottlings are matured in smaller oak barrels and barriques, and are first released three years after the vintage.
Memo Summary Notes
Notably, Umathum uses the name "Rotburger" (the original name for Zweigelt) to move away from the controversial historical associations of the grape's namesake, Dr. Zweigelt.
Justin Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2023 750ml
Justin Vineyard is one of Paso Robles' founding estates, established in 1981 in the Adelaida Hills — where calcareous soils, hot days, and dramatically cool nights create ideal conditions for Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon. Justin has become the benchmark producer of the appellation, crafting wines of genuine depth, balance, and approachability that rival Napa at a fraction of the price. The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is aged 14 months in traditional small oak barrels, built with the same care as the finest traditionally crafted Bordeaux-style wines.
The nose is aromatic and inviting: red raspberry and black cherry laced with vanilla, soft herbs, and warming spices. On the palate, it is dry, moderately full-bodied, and supple — bursting with bright red plum and ripe cherry, with velvety, well-integrated tannins and nuanced elements of caramel, toasted coconut, fennel, and sage. The long finish turns pleasantly savory with floral notes and a hint of pepper. Remarkably balanced and complex, with a fresh palate that invites another sip.
"Lush aromas of cherry, cinnamon, and candied pecan show on the inviting nose. The palate is silky and generous with ample cherry, vanilla, and spicecake flavors. This is a deeply satisfying and bold Cab at a very fair price." — Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast, 92 Points (Vintage 2023)
Winemaker Notes
Bright ruby red with moderate concentration. Red raspberry and black cherry on the nose with vanilla, soft herbs, and warming spices. Dry and supple on the palate with red plum, ripe cherry, caramel, toasted coconut, fennel, and sage. Long, savory finish with floral notes and a hint of pepper. Pairs well with filet mignon, ribeye, grilled chicken, aged Cheddar, and Manchego.
Critical Acclaim
James Suckling 93 Points: A rich, yet balanced wine with honest cabernet characteristics of savory herbs and graphite as well as cedar, tobacco and cigar box. Full-bodied with cleansing acidity and flavors of black cherry, cocoa and spiced orange rind.
Wine Enthusiast 92 Points: This is a deeply satisfying and bold Cab at a very fair price. Lush aromas of cherry, cinnamon, and candied pecan show on the inviting nose. The palate is silky and generous with ample cherry, vanilla, and spicecake flavors. Editors' Choice
Vinous Media 90 Points: The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts with bright raspberry and cherry, complemented by autumnal spice. It is juicy in feel, with a solid core of ripe red and blue fruits supported by vibrant acidity. Gently tannic yet lively, the 2023 leaves a licorice and dark chocolate tinge that lingers.
