Overview Musar Jeune White vines are from organically certified vineyards and come from two different terroirs; Vermentino and Chardonnay are grown on limestone soils, while the Viognier comes from vineyards with silty soils. Both vineyard areas are at 1,000
metres above sea level.

Grape Varieties The 2022 vintage is a blend of Viognier (40%), Vermentino (30%) and Chardonnay

(30%). The Vermentino, native to Sardinia and Corsica and thus well suited to the
Eastern Mediterranean climate, adds citrus, mineral and even a marine character. It
is moderate in alcohol and combines well with the richer Chardonnay and fragrance
of the Viognier.

The Wine Enthusiast by Michael Alberty writes 92 Points | This aromatic set of orange creamsicle, peach and Circus Peanut candies ticked all the boxes for my inner child. A lightning bolt of acidity snapped me out of youthful reminiscence. Then the wine's nectarine, basil and anise flavors captured my attention. Great acidity and an absolute torch and tang mouthfeel make for lively sipping.

The Wine Enthusiast 94 Points | Dusty slate and earth tones mingle into luscious guava and pink-grapefruit flavors in this decadently fruity kabinett. A sumptuous semi-dry Riesling, it's profoundly ripe and deeply concentrated but zippy and spry, finishing on a long, honeyed streak of lime and lemon acidity. Delicious young but should hold well through 2035.

James Suckling 95 Points | A great riesling Spatlese that makes it clear why this category has not disappeared in spite of the rise of dry German riesling. Concentrated peachy fruit is married to excellent structure and the balance of the touch of natural grape sweetness with wet stone minerality and crisp acidity is dazzling. Very long and vibrant finish. Drink or hold.

A lively and beautifully structured white wine from organic vineyards in the rolling hills of the Rheinhessen region. The entry-level “100 Hills” wines are produced from about 40% estate-grown fruit, with the remainder sourced from other local growers who are certified organic by the European Union.

The wine displays lively and bright fruit while bringing an extra dimension of texture from maturation in wood. It’s an elegant and invigorating wine that’s excellent for everyday enjoyment.

Vinous 92 Points | The 2021 Chardonnay watts up with a vivid mix of lime-tinged yellow apple and nuances of vanilla custard. This is soft and enveloping, with a mix of saline minerals and sweet spice that gives way to tart orchard fruit. The 2021 finishes long and structured, potent yet fresh while leaving a staining of almond extract richness. There's a lot of power here, along with the balance to mature through medium-term cellaring.

Half-Bottle. This wine is a gastronomic specialty made from hand-picked frozen grapes that were harvested in the early morning hours at 10F. These grapes produce only a small amount of highly concentrated juice.

The resulting wine is similarly concentrated with intense flavors of apricot, pineapple and spicy pear. Its silky sweetness is balanced by bright acidity, which makes it perfect to pair with richer desserts.

Winemaker Description

Federspiel is a designation of ripeness for dry wines, a term used exclusively by members of the Vinea Wachau.

Federspiel wines must be unchaptalized and fall between 11.5 and 12.5% ABV. The grapes are hand-harvested, typically in October, and are sent directly to press where they spontaneously ferment in stainless-steel tanks. Franz Prager, co-founder of the Vinea Wachau, had already earned a reputation for his wines when Toni Bodenstein married into the family.

Bodenstein’s passion for biodiversity and old terraces, coupled with brilliant winemaking, places Prager in the highest echelon of Austrian producers. Steinriegl is planted to Riesling and is Prager’s only vineyard west of Weißenkirchen.

The exceptionally steep, southwest-facing site has a cool mesoclimate due to its proximity to the forest, and its soil is a unique “kalksilikatmarmor,” a limestone silicate marble rarely found elsewhere in the Wachau. Bodenstein produces both an earlier-picked Federspiel and a later-picked Smaragd.

Austrian Riesling is often defined by elevated levels of dry extract thanks to a lengthy ripening period and freshness due to dramatic temperature swings between day and night.

Steinriegl’s uniquely cool microclimate results in wines of high aroma and focused acidity and its limestone soil provide compact structure and a flavor that is distinctive among Wachau Rieslings.Riesling’s high acidity makes it one of the most versatile wines at the table.

Riesling can be used to cut the fattiness of foods such as pork or sausages and can tame some saltiness. Conversely, it can highlight foods such as fish or vegetables in the same way a squeeze of lemon or a vinaigrette might.

Winemaker Description

After working at Cia de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez Juan Antonio Ponce returned home. The project started in 2005, he was 23, just 11 barrels, and a loan. The family’s wine growing tradition dates back to Juan Antonio’s great-grandfather, although his father never made wine–he used to sell the grapes to the local cooperative. “Ponce says. “The area is full of prejudices, people lack self-confidence.

These days Manchuela is probably the most interesting appellation in central Spain, led by Ponce. This is sharp and austere, mineral and electric. A wine to keep.

The As Abeleiras “Viño branco de parcela” (Albariño) is released a year after the entry-level Albariño and comes from a single parcela planted in 1993 by a very young Pedro and his father. It sits at 100 meters altitude, also on granite soil. While the 2019 version was raised in steel, this year spent time in old French oak barrels.

While the other two Albariños have a broad band of expressions and roundness due to the diversity of the many vineyard parcels in each wine, this single vineyard’s uniqueness offers a more vertical than horizontal experience. While the other two would be great for a bigger party of people because they jump into the mosh pit and start knocking people out on the first swing, As Abeleiras is initially more snug and better suited for a two-person tango.

While the others are wonderful in their way, this is the thinker, the wine to observe and admire for its singularity, focused austerity, and tight, chalky and grippy texture. It’s a minerally beam of light. The others are mineral bombs.

Prà · Monte Grande Soave Classico 2023 · Veneto, Italy · 750ml

Prà Monte Grande combines Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave in a single-parcel white wine with fruit depth and mineral freshness. Citrus, orchard fruit, flint, and a long, savory finish.

Character & Style

James Suckling describes smoke, minerals, Mirabelle plum, and lemon leaves, while Vinous highlights green apple, salty mineral, candied citrus, and tropical melon. Wine Spectator adds pineapple, blood orange peel, almond, and a silky palate. The producer’s general note emphasizes exotic fruit, yellow citrus, freshness, and a long almond-and-vanilla finish.

Expert Reviews - Vintage 2023

James Suckling · 93 Points - A restrained wine with complex, layered aromas of smoke, minerals and peat with touches of Mirabelle plums and lemon leaves. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with sweet fruit, zesty acidity and a vibrant, savory finish.

Vinous · 93 Points - The 2023 Soave Classico Monte Grande is impossible to ignore as crushed flint stones and citrus zest complement crushed green apples. It stimulates the senses with a core of salty mineral and candied citrus that elevate its ripe orchard fruits, creating a sensation of boundless energy. It finishes long, mixing tropical melon with inner florals, leaving the palate salivating for more.

Wine Spectator · 93 Points - Enticing aromas of petrol and flint draw you in, with a lightly honeyed profile of juicy pineapple, dehydrated raspberry and blood orange peel fruit meeting savory hints of lentil and blanched almond. Shows precise balance and mouthwatering expression, with its finely detailed range gliding across the silky palate and expanding on the finish. Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave.

Producer Description

The minerality, which is the distinctive characteristic of this cru, gives this wine great elegance. An outstanding olfactory complexity of mature exotic fruit and yellow citrus fruits. On the palate it has good freshness with a long finish of sweet almond and vanilla. Thanks to its structure this wine has a good aging potential.

Vineyard & Winemaking Context

The supplied background describes Graziano Prà’s winery in Monteforte d’Alpone, established in the early 1980s, with family vineyards held for generations. It identifies volcanic soils as an important part of the Soave vineyards’ character and dates the first Monte Grande release to 1988.

For Monte Grande, the supplied general background lists 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave. Trebbiano is picked early for freshness; shoots leading to Garganega clusters are cut in September, allowing the fruit to concentrate on the vine for roughly another month. Fermentation and aging are described as taking place in large neutral 30-hectoliter botti for 10 months, followed by time in bottle. These are general production notes, not a separate verified 2023 technical sheet.

The background contains conflicting statements about organic certification, describing the Soave vineyards both as in conversion and as certified. No certification claim has been added for this bottle.

Serving & Pairing Suggestions

Serve chilled in a white wine glass and allow time for the aromas to unfold. Try with grilled fish, scallops, risotto, roast poultry, or almond-accented vegetable dishes.

Winemaker Description

The 2021 vintage overall was very similar to 2018. July, August, and into September were warm and very humid with significant rain during the fall with some places receiving up to 9” of rain in 24-36 hour periods at several different times over the three months.

Rains and frequent cloud cover during September and October made the season challenging. however, the long fall season gave us bright acidity and a fresh palate. The fruit was hand harvested on October 7, being carefully sorted in the field to only select the most clean fruit.

Winemaking: The fruit was hand harvested and gently destemmed. After pressing, the juice was cold settled for 48 hours before being racked to a combination of four French oak barrels made by Dargaud Jagle, all medium toast (one new, one once used, one twice used, and one neutral). The juice was inoculated with VIN13 yeast and went through a swift but healthy fermentation followed by full Malolactic fermentation.

The wine aged sur lie for 11 months being stirred biweekly by rolling the barrels with special racks meant to agitate the lees without introducing oxygen. After racking, it was gently fined with a small amount of bentonite prior to bottling. It bottled in November and was aged in bottle for 9 months prior to release in August 2022.

Max Ferdinand Richter · Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Spätlese · 2023

The Richter family estate has been in the family for more than 300 years and is now owned and run by winemaker Dirk Richter. Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr sits at the heart of the Brauneberg slope, near the river and surrounded by Juffer. The producer describes the south-facing site as rich in iron minerals, with weathered grey slate across its steep vineyards.

James Suckling finds concentrated fresh apricot, mineral energy and a long finish in this medium-bodied 2023 Spätlese. Vinous adds mango, peach compote and pink grapefruit peel, noting the wine’s striking lightness alongside its sweetness.

James Suckling · 97 Points · 2023
This youthful Mosel riesling has an extraordinary depth of fresh apricot character on the very concentrated, medium-bodied palate. Restrained succulence in the Spatlese context, but there’s nothing restrained about the wine’s mineral energy and the drive in the extremely long finish. And if you pay close attention, you will find a wealth of mineral, herbal and spicy nuances. Reminds me of the great 1990 vintage of this wine. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Vinous · 94 Points · 2023
The 2023 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Spätlese, made with just 10% botrytized fruit, opens with a touch of mango and plunges into vivid peach compote sweetness. Pink grapefruit peel counters and intensifies it. Simply gorgeous, with absolute lightness. A dream.

Expert Reviews - Vintage 2022

Charles Curtis MW of Decanter Magazine writes 94 Points | Lucie Coutoux explained that although La Maltroie and Champgains (as they spell it) are roughly the same elevations on the band of premier crus, there is more limestone in Champgains that gives a bigger wine. In 2022, this shows ripe notes of passionfruit and lime peel with an accent of hazelnut and hay. The texture is supple and rich, almost fat, but pleasantly so. The grapes are from the domaine's parcel of 0.44 hectares at the top of the slope. Drinking Window: 2027-2050.

Jasper Morris of Inside Burgundy writes 92 Points | A glowing pale lemon yellow. There is a clear white fruit charm to this, a little more chiselled than the softly welcoming Chenevottes, with a limestone length and purity at the finish. Drink from 2027-2032.

Allen Meadows of Burghound writes 91 Points | This is aromatically similar to the Maltroie though with evident floral elements. There is slightly better volume and mid-palate density to the delicious and caressing but punchy medium weight flavors that possess a healthy amount of sappy dry extract while exhibiting better overall depth and persistence. This too should be approachable young but easily repay mid-term keeping.

Expert Review - Vintage 2020

Allen Meadows of Burghound | There is enough wood to merit mentioning but not so much as to overshadow the vaguely exotic and ripe aromas of white peach, apple compote, various citrus elements and a whiff of acacia blossom. The wood is also reflected by the big-bodied, powerful and overtly muscular flavors that possess outstanding richness that is buffered by both a firm minerality as well as bright acidity on the strikingly persistent, balanced and robust finale. This is not a CC of refinement but it is indisputably impressive in its fashion and a wine that should age and improve gracefully over the next 12 to 15 years and last thereafter for a similar period. In a word, superb.

Winemaker Description

Juan Jurado belongs to a new generation of young winemakers who see potential in the Marco de Jerez region beyond traditional fortified wines. After living away from his native Andalusia for many years (from Sitges to Australia via London), during which time he trained in the world of wine and sommellerie, he decided to return to his roots to start a project focused on authentic wines that reflect the diversity of the Jerez Region beyond Finos and Olorosos.

In 2022, Jurado invested all his savings to purchase a small vineyard in the Miraflores de Sanlúcar estate, along with winemaking equipment including a press, destemmer, casks, and jars to produce his first vintage. This marked the birth of Agrícola Calcárea, a project dedicated to crafting honest wines using minimal yet sufficient intervention to showcase the unique characteristics of each vineyard through classic and ancestral varieties of the Marco region.

The resulting wines are highly aromatic, featuring stone fruit, citrus, and white flower notes, with chalky and salty undertones. On the palate, they are savory and mineral, with a touch of bitterness.

Winemaker Description

Viña Sastre is an iconic, family-run winery in the heart of Ribera del Duero, famous for making long-lived, elegantly structured wines from organic, old vines grown near the Duero river. Flavus is an incredible, singular white wine made from indigenous cayetana blanca grapes from 100-year-old vines, selected from Sastre’s historic Pago de Santa Cruz vineyards at 800m to 840m for their complexity and ability to age gracefully. Sastre handcrafts classic wines through extremely low-yielding biodynamic farming methods, fermenting exclusively with native yeasts.

In Pago de Santa Cruz, a small amount of white cayetana blanca grapes have always existed alongside the red tempranillo, co-planted and traditionally mixed into the field blend destined to be one of Spain’s most iconic wines. Through Jesús Sastre’s good friend and Rías Baixas pioneer Gerardo Méndez, they first researched and separated the white grapes from the blend, making the first Flavus in 2007 to make a simple, charming white wine for near-term consumption. Ribera del Duero does not have much of a tradition for white wines, so the initial concept was to make something simple and humble. Instead, they discovered through the cellaring and consistent tasting of verticals of Flavus over the years that the wine is capable of improving in bottle for a decade or more, leaving tasters stunned by the unique, complex flavors which develop. There is no designation for Ribera del Duero blanco, so while this mighty blanco may be a “Reserva” qualitatively and spiritually, bureaucratically, it carries the humble Vino de Mesa designation. Perhaps in the future, the appellation will see the same possibilities for value and quality in their white wines as their more famous reds.

Vinification – Following a manual harvest, the wine spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel. No malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked and aged in stainless steel for ten months, followed by two years of bottle age prior to release.
