Oscar Garcia Moncada | 67 Wine: The Leflaive family name boasts a long and distinguished winemaking tradition in Burgundy, making it perfectly fitting for them to extend this tradition north to Champagne. In February, I had the pleasure of tasting through the Valentin Leflaive Champagne lineup and was thoroughly impressed by each cuvée. Among my top favorites is the Valentin Leflaive Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut CV/18/30 NV 750ml, crafted from 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced from the grand cru village of Cramant and the premier cru village of Vertus in the Côte des Blancs. The base vintage is 2018, with a dosage of 3g/L, as indicated by the designation CV/18/30.

An elegant, fresh Blanc de Blancs from Valentin Leflaive that offers notes of yellow apples, candied lemons, freshly-baked bread and a clean salinity that lingers in the finish.

Mevushal. Grapes are harvested by hand, gently crushed, and soft pressed. A second fermentation at low temperature lasts over two months, and the wine is finished with maturation on yeast lees for three months before bottling.

Appealing aromas of apple and stone fruit. The palate has citrus notes and fresh acidity. Finish soft and fruity on the finish.

And what a finely wrought vintage it is already, with verve equal to its supple polish. Joining Bosc pear, sweet brioche, and lemon curd on the nose are fascinating nuances of smoke, stony minerality, and petrichor as well as jasmine and ginger; while the rippling palate builds steadily through peach and Asian pear to pomelo and tangerine peel to tangy sumac and white pepper on the finish. Winemaker Description

This non-vintage Rose is the end result of a desire to create a Rose champagne with a delightfully luscious, fruit-based charm. Jacques Peters, the cellarmaster, and his team wanted a champagne that would be accessible and naturally engaging while conserving Veuve Clicquot's essential values in terms of style.

The wine has a luminous color with attractive pink glints. The nose is generous and elegant, with initial aromas of fresh red fruit (raspberry, wild strawberry, cherry, blackberry), leading to biscuity notes of dried fruits and Viennese pastries (almonds, apricots and brioche).

90 Points Wine Enthusiast | A deep-colored rosé, as pink as its label, this Champagne is full of youthful fruit. It has a soft intensity of red fruits and ripe acidity in a full flavor

Jeb Dunnuck writes:  Comprising 85% of production, the NV Champagne Yellow Label Brut is 40% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and the rest Meunier, with 35-40% reserve wine. Entirely fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, it spends three years on the lees, and the wine sees 9 grams per liter of dosage, but the house does not disclose the disgorgement date. A golden straw hue, it’s ripe with aromas of yeasty bread dough, peaches, and fresh flowers. Medium-bodied on the palate, it’s ripe and juicy with rounded red berried fruit, a supple texture, a pillowy mousse, and a warming finish. Vilarnau Brut Reserva is a blend of Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel. Lo and aged for 15 months on its lees. This cava is complex on the nose offering primary aromas of fresh bright fruit with some citrus notes and white flowers. On the palate fresh and dry with a nice velvety texture due to the time spent on lees. Ideal as an aperitif or with light dishes such as salad and seafood, perfect with oysters. Serve well chilled.

The Vilarnau canvas date from 1949 and were originally located in the town center of Sant Sadurni D'Anoia, the heart of Cava. Vilarnau has been part of the Gonzalez Byass group since 1982. The vineyards where the winery is currently located were bought in 1990 and the state-of-the-art winery was inaugurated in 2005. The Vilarnau estate is situated 6km outside of Sant Sadurni D'Anoia in the highest point of the area Espiells, 200m above sea level. High altitudes contribute to slower maturation of the grape, which produces wines with higher acidity contributing to more balanced aging.

Cousins Jeff and Simon Grier started the family-owned Villiera Wines outside Stellenbosch in 1983 and embarked on an extensive replanting of classic and local varietals. Cathy Brewer (née Grier) later joined the family team to head up the sales, marketing and export divisions. The introduction of hi-tech cellar facilities for the production of still wines as well as Méthode Cap Classique combined with a unique wine business philosophy has seen Villiera developing into one of the largest private wineries in the country.

Roger Voss of The Wine Enthusiast 89 Points | This is a ripe wine. Pear and quince flavors are cut by lemon zest acidity, making for a fresh, rich wine that is well balanced. From vines in the Côte des Bar in the southern Aube region of Champagne, the wine has a warm, rich while still crisp character. Winemaker Description Vincent Couche’s story is perhaps a familiar one, especially in Champagne where the past two decades have seen a small but real revolution against conventional agriculture. Vincent’s parents were vignerons in the Aube.

20 years ago he made his first vintage, and in the 2000s, he began working the soil. As of 2008, Vincent has been certified in biodynamics, and is obsessed (to say the least) with farming living soils and making living wine.

His cellar work is marked by long, slow élèvages for the base wines, fermentations with native yeast, as well as both low dosages and low sulfur additions. His wines see as little manipulation as any Champagnes we’ve come across. 10 of Vincent’s 13ha are in Buxeuil, in the Aube.

This terroir is marked by kimmeridgian limestone soil that is more akin to the terroir of Chablis than to the terroir of the Marne. In fact, Buxeuil is not more than an hour’s drive from Chablis. Like the majority of vineyards in the Aube, Vincent’s Buxeuil vines are Pinot Noir. Vincent’s other 3ha are in Montgueux, the isolated chalk outcropping 5km from the city of Troyes, and are planted to Chardonnay.

This diversity of terroirs and duality of grapes, combined with Vincent's obsession with responsibly incorporating oxygen into winemaking ("wines are like people; if they don’t have oxygen, they die") results in wines that are broad and vinous in style, with with a rigid spine of mouthwatering acidity.

Von Winning Riesling Brut light-bodied with notes of lemon zest, yellow pears, soft bubbles, and integrated minerality on the finish.

White fruit flavors, crisp, crunchy fleshy fruit aromas, fully ripe. With air the wine gains complexity, leaning towards nectarine and crisp cox-orange apple with a nice dose of salinity in the long finish.

For several months, I have been searching for a German sparkling wine that could truly captivate my palate. Yet, every time a sales rep presented an option, I found myself disappointed. Then came the Weingut Stephan Steinmetz Liaison Crémant Brut, Mosel, Germany.

I swirled the wine in the glass, carefully observing its color and analyzing its nose. Finally, I took a sip. As the wine unfolded on my palate and my brain processed the experience, three words came to mind: Electric, Enticing, and Enigmatic.

Yes, this was it—the German sparkling wine I had been longing for!

Sight: A delicate stream of fine bubbles rises steadily, forming a small rosary of effervescence. The wine presents a pale silver hue on the glass.

Nose: Aromas of orchard fruits dominate, with notes of crisp green pears and apples, complemented by stone fruits like white peaches.

Palate: On the palate, vibrant flavors of green apples, lime peel, and orange zest shine through, enhanced by subtle hints of toast. The wine’s electric acidity and mouth-coating minerality create a dynamic and invigorating experience.

Finish: The finish is long, refreshingly dry, and leaves you eager for the next sip.

Pairing: This wine pairs beautifully with a variety of cuisines. I recommend seafood ramen, as its umami-rich broth and delicate textures harmonize perfectly with the wine’s brightness and minerality.

We reduce the use of machines to the bare minimum and rely on traditional handwork from spring to the harvest in autumn. Only this intensive care of each individual vine, such as constant foliage work or cutting out grapes, enables the desired quality to be achieved.

Respectful treatment of nature is very important to us. Once you have seen our beautiful Moselle landscape, you will know what we are talking about. We live and work in the rhythm of nature. Every vintage is different. Every year has surprises in store for us. And not always just positive ones. We have decided to intervene as little as possible in both the vineyard and the cellar and to work as sustainably as possible.

Only natural cork guarantees harmonious maturation and storage for years. For us, the technical closure is not an alternative! The advantages and rituals of natural cork predominate.
