Vinous 93 Points | The 2021 Chardonnay Cordillera de los Andes comes from the Talinay vineyard in Limarí. 50% was aged in French barrels, 23% of them new. Yellow with a greenish sheen. The nose offers green apple notes with hints of pear, acacia, hazelnuts and a whiff of praline over a bed of oak. In the mouth it has a saline feel with a slightly creamy flow and pert freshness. A long-lasting wine.

Jesica Vargas of the Wine Enthusiast writes 90 Points | Carménère loves Peumo, a subregion in Cachapoal Valley. Here the grape can fully ripen and make wines that have a balanced bouquet and palate. This red has light notes of berries on the nose. Finely grained tannins and good acidity hold cherry flavors mixed with dried basil. 

Winemaker Description

Great color intensity. On the nose it expresses with splendid force the character of the Carménère variety, (berries, eucalyptus and leather), with notes of roasting -laurel and clove-, liquorice and pepper black. Great amplitude in the mouth and round tannins. Retronasal aromas of toasted bread and spices, ending in a long aftertaste.

This great wine is the ideal companion for roast lamb or pig as well as meats cooked over coals and spiced with aromatic herbs and licorice.

James Suckling 91 Points | Aromas of cassis and ripe blackberries with notes of chocolate, nutmeg, spices and bark. Medium-bodied with juicy character and sleek, polished texture. Tannins are fine and chalky. Flavorful finish. 

The Wine Spectator 90 Points | Opens with a toasty vanilla bean and spiced pastry note that clings to the rich wild berry and plum core, which is kept honest by a streak of mineral acidity. Comes together nicely in the end, with a lingering note of chocolate. This is a touch flamboyant, but will have its fans. Drink now through 2028.

With a characteristic fruitiness of Maipo costa, red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and cassis are mixed with aromas of black pepper, some moist soil and tobacco. This biodynamic, sulfur-free Carménère immediately captivated us: immediately very present, enormously aromatic, a true powerhouse! On the nose, green pepper, black pepper, coffee, cloves, and other spices, with grassy, vegetal notes. A very successful blend of fruit and complex vegetal aromas. Initially astringent and fully dry, the palate displays powerful cherry fruit with tobacco, cocoa, and pepper, then becomes increasingly smooth, soft, and supple.

Winemaker Description 

Intense red, violet and bright. Fresh aroma, like the plum, joined with lactic notes and a subtle touch of vanilla. In mouth is sweet inlet, medium palate, firm structure and sucrose finish.

'Gato Negro Cabernet Malbec is a soft red wine, with aromas of black fruit, like plums, with subtle notes of vanilla. Delicious mouthfeel, medium body and firm structure.

Winemaker Description 

This Reserva Carmenere is a soft representation of the notoriously hard-to-ripen Carmenere grape. In order to keep the wine’s fruity flavor, the clusters are picked from older vines in the Maipo Valley, and the juice is fermented at low temperatures.

The Casa Julia has a nose of black fruit and a pronounced vegetable note, like a green bell pepper. Blueberry and blackberry flavors mingle with a hint of earth and tannins in this full-bodied red wine.

This Carmenère pairs well with a wide range of dishes, from grilled pork loin and blackened chicken to steak salad with roasted peppers

Dark garnet in color. This Carménère has aromas of black plum, rich soil, toasted vanilla, and licorice. Fruity with dried raspberry, tar, roasted cherry, white pepper, black licorice, and a moderate oakiness. The tannins are soft and silky with a warming medium-length finish.

This Carmenere is sourced from two sections of Invina Batuco vineyard in the Maule Valley of Chile. The Batuco Vineyard is a thirty-year-old vineyard site that is own-rooted and situated in a small sub-valley on the eastern side of coastal mountains.

• This Carménère is sourced from two sections of the Invina Batuco vineyard in the Maule Valley of Chile. The Carménère grapes with their flavor of black fruit, herbal notes and soft tannins are blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to add a spicy red fruit characteristic, and Syrah to include notes of red licorice.
• The Batuco Vineyard is a thirty-year-old vineyard site that is own-rooted and situated in a small sub-valley on the eastern side of coastal mountains. The strong marine influence makes for long growing seasons and ripening conditions for Carménère.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep and intense ruby red. On the nose are notes of plum, currants and cherries with toasted notes from oak ageing. On the palate this wine is elegant and soft with a fresh and persistant finish. 

Stunning Pinot from the cool, high-altitude Colchagua Valley. Grown on volcanic soils and aged in concrete egg and neutral oak. Light, bright color with high aromatic intensity of fresh strawberries and red fruit such as currants and raspberry. The 2020 Max Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon has a dull cherry red colour with purple shimmers. The nose unfolds notes of strawberries, ripe black cherries, cassis, accompanied by cloves, marzipan and some mint, tarragon and rosemary notes, all framed by pleasant touches of caramel and chocolate.

The palate is predominated by ripe red fruits and sweet notes that recall spices like cloves and some vanilla, chocolate, roasted coffee and cedar. It is a wine of great structure and juiciness with round tannins, crowned by an excellent persistence.

The Errazuriz Max Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is an outstanding selection, delivering power, elegance, and complexity for a great price.

This Cabernet Sauvignon offers an intense and deep color and nice aromas such a red fruit, pepper and tobacco. It has smooth tannins, very freshness and fruity, which gives the wine a good balance.

These ancient, own-rooted País vines are 800 meters from the Bío Bío river in a dry river bed that used to hold the river. The soil is especially unique with an alluvial top-layer over black, sandy (basaltic) soils.

This is “País Franco”—as in piè franco—meaning the vine is ungrafted like most of Henriquez’s vines, but the name also draws attention to how this cuvée is one of the most honest, pure and frank versions of the variety available.

The Trotamundos wines are the brainchild of two winemaker friends, César Baeza and Miguel Besoain. The term “Trotamundos” translates to “globetrotter,” and their winemaking philosophy centers on creating wines with a global perspective, incorporating what they have learned while traveling throughout the wine world to craft unique expressions.

I recently tasted the Trotamundos Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Leyda Valley 2023 and was extremely pleased with its quality and value. This is a Pinot Noir that delivers exceptional drinkability without compromising quality. Sourced from the cool climate of Chile’s Leyda Valley, it showcases bright aromas and flavors of wild red berries—raspberries and strawberries—with a subtle hint of blue fruit as well.

On the palate, the wine is well structured, with vibrant red berry fruit, well-integrated acidity, and mild tannins that lead to effortless drinkability. A stony minerality adds depth and naturally complements the fruit profile. The finish is clean and refreshing, with bright, palate-cleansing acidity.

This wine is very food-friendly. I suggest pairing it with Latin-inspired dishes, grilled skirt steak, or crab-stuffed cannelloni.

The Wine Enthusiast by Jesica Vargas writes 90 Points |  Delicate sweet notes of nectarine introduce this lively wine. The palate offers white fruit flavors, balanced by moderate acidity, leading to a crisp finish.  

Winemaker Description 

An attractive greenish-yellow colour. Its ageing in foudres has lent it citrus and green chilli pepper aromas, as well as saline notes. In the mouth, it is very structured and tense thanks to its high acidity and minerality. The finish is clean and persistent, with a subtle saline note coming through. This highly complex Sauvignon Blanc tempts you to enjoy it with food.

Block 22 is located on the first terrace of the river Huasco. It has very old, stony soils from the river which have very special qualities: a little clay and a lot of calcareous soil – lime, calcium carbonate – white soils. Characterized by low yields of grapes with very concentrated fresh fruit. In the Atacama Desert in the Huasco valley, the temperatures were fresh, especially at night. Temperatures are kept low because of the constant cool morning breezes blowing in from the Pacific Ocean, as well as the classic “Camanchaca”, a dense fog which comes in from the ocean, helping to regulate the temperatures and ensure an optimum level of humidity in the atmosphere.

The Ventisquero Grey Glacier Sauvignon Blanc 2023 from the Longomilla Vineyard is a highly distinctive wine that pushes the boundaries of Chilean viticulture. Grown in the Atacama Desert—the driest place on Earth—this wine is defined by "extreme" conditions, resulting in a profile that is far more saline and mineral than your typical New Zealand or Casablanca Sauvignon Blanc.

The Rivera Del Notro is Roberto Henriquez’s most fruit-forward País. 200-year-old vines on the southern edge of the Bio Bío River enjoy warmer temperatures, yielding juicy red berry flavors and firm tannins. This is his most fruit-driven Pais. Vineyards are planted in alluvial soils in the south edge of the river Bio Bio, under warmer temperatures. Juicy red berries, firm tannins.

An extraordinary "natural" wine that represents the fruit-driven side of the ancient País grape. While Roberto’s País Franco (which we discussed earlier) is often more ethereal and mineral, the Rivera del Notro is widely considered his most approachable and "juicy" expression, often described as his ideal wine for an Asado (Chilean BBQ).

Winemaker Description 

Roberto Henríquez spent several years working in South Africa, Canada and France before going on to study agronomy and enology. In 2015 he moved back home to Biobío and began his own project based on the grape Pais, in part motivated by Louis Antoine Luyt.

Quickly he got a lot of recognition due to his most important work in principle of recovering the traditional viticultre in the South of Chile, by obtaining a delicate rusticity in all his wines. Torontel is a grape that evolved from a natural cross of Moscatel de Alejandria and Pais.

A white wine rich in spices and floral tones. This is an intense wine with tremendous body and acidity, with especially with firm, sharp tannins.

Roberto Henriquez is a "minimalist" winemaker. This wine is fermented using native yeasts, often in old oak barrels or stainless steel, and is bottled with minimal or no added sulfur. It is neither fined nor filtered, so don't be surprised if the wine appears slightly cloudy or has a small amount of sediment.

The Legado line of wines from De Martino showcase a specific varietal and their cultivation in the best terroirs of Chile resulting in wines that express the true character of each region. The bouquet consists of ripe aromas of cassis and black cherry, a mild touch of oak and a slight hint of earth. Medium in body with fantastic acidity, it is very juicy, with a medium-long finish.

James Suckling 92 Points | An elegant wine that’s dry and fruity, with a lovely creamy texture and suppleness on the palate. Fresh and poised, with a medium-long finish. A very good rosé made from 46% cinsault, 37% grenache, 13% syrah and 4% mourvedre.

Tim Atkin 97 Points | Picked early because of the pandemic, but not showing any less concentration as a result, this is one of Chile’s finest Bordeaux blends, made with an 80/20 blend of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the Macul estate in Satiago. Concentrated yet not overbearing, it has damson, cassis and potpourri flavours and a frame of toast and vanilla spicy oak. Built to last.
