Winemaker Description - Vintage 2022 

Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2022 is intensely ruby red in color. Impressive on the nose with intense notes of black cherries, delicate floral hints of violets and rose petals that lead over to notes of vanilla and cocoa powder. Entry on the palate is mouth filling and lively then unfolds with great balance revealing supple vibrant tannins that accompany and sustain a long, sapid and persistent finish.

Luis Gutierez of The Wine Advocate writes 92 Points | The white 2022 Terroir Històric Blanc is the regional wine that blends grapes from nine different villages, 75% Garnacha Blanca and 25% Macabeo from different soils, slate, clay, granite and alluvial. The bunches fermented for three to five days in stainless steel, and the wine matured in stainless steel for six months. It has 13% alcohol and mellow acidity, 4.5 grams. It has a spectacular nose that is very expressive, aromatic, clean and open with pungent notes of pollen and beeswax. It's juicy, round and clean with persistent and pungent flavors, not very high in acidity, eminently Mediterranean. Really impressive.

The Pinot Project Pinot Noir — California 2022

The Pinot Project was born from a simple conviction: that great Pinot Noir doesn't have to cost a fortune. Handcrafted from premium vineyards across California's most celebrated coastal regions — Monterey and San Benito on the Central Coast, and Suisun Valley in the north — the wine draws on a diversity of soils and climates to achieve remarkable balance and depth. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully destemmed to express bright, pure fruit while maintaining the freshness that defines the variety. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 91 points.

The nose opens with vibrant aromas of Bing cherry, dark plum, cinnamon, potpourri, and Tahitian vanilla bean. 97 Points Jeb Dunnuck | The 2020 Cornas Chaillot comes from a mix of lieux-dits (it's mostly Chaillot) as well as some younger vines. It's an incredible wine in its own right and certainly doesn't give much in terms quality to its big brother. Awesome aromatics of crème de cassis, violets, crushed stone, and bouquet garni-like notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, concentrated mid-palate, and ultra-fine tannins. It's a touch more finesse-driven and elegant compared to the Reynard and should round into form with just 5-7 years of bottle age. This is legit awesome Cornas that will have 20-25 years of ultimate longevity. (2020).

Tio Pepe Fino Sherry is a star bright, pale golden color. It is elegant and distinctive, with fresh bread and almond aromas. The palate is full bodied, crisp and very dry, with a complex, long finish.

Generous, but very dry and salty on the palate with a refreshing touch of austerity. Where are the olives? Drink now, if possible from a freshly opened bottle. 

Trediberri Barolo del Comune di La Morra — Piedmont 2022

Trediberri is one of La Morra’s most exciting young estates — a small, precision-focused domaine that has quickly earned a reputation for wines of exceptional purity and finesse. Their Barolo del Comune di La Morra is a single-commune bottling sourced primarily from the high-altitude Berri vineyard, with approximately 18% from the legendary Rocche dell’Annunziata cru. Aged 21 months in large Slavonian oak casks, the wine is built for transparency: no new oak, no extraction, no shortcuts — just the pure voice of La Morra Nebbiolo. The 2022 vintage, shaped by heat and drought, delivered lower yields and concentrated fruit; in the hands of Trediberri, the result is a wine of remarkable balance, freshness, and early approachability, with a drinking window stretching to 2036 and beyond.

The color is a classic translucent garnet. The nose is lifted and perfumed: cranberry, redcurrant, fresh cherry, rose petals, pepper, and brushwood, with hints of dried herbs and earth that take some coaxing — and reward patience. On the palate, it is tightly knit and slender but beautifully endowed: juicy red berries, cardamom, and floral tones framed by lively acidity and al dente tannins. There is a beautiful sense of tension and precision — no heaviness, just clarity and energy. The finish is long, mineral-driven, and classically Barolo.

Stephan Reinhardt of the Wine Advocate writes 94+ Points | The 2014 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is highly complex on the clear, intense and smoky, lemony nose. Clear, fresh, straight and very mineral on the nose, this is a pure but complex, intense, stony Riesling that is pretty austere at the moment. Provided with racy acidity, but concentrated and mineral on the palate, this is exceptional dry Riesling with great tension. To be served in 10, 20 and even in 30 years.  Drinking 2025 to 2040. 

Ian D’Agata of Vinous writes 94+ Points | Vivid straw-green. Delicate nuances of jasmine and lemon verbena complicate aromas of green apple, lime and minerals. Pure and penetrating on the palate, boasting superb definition to the flavors of gin, mint, minerals, violet and lemon zest. The finish is remarkably crystalline and long. This Frédéric Emile is currently dominated by its Osterberg component (the cuvée is a blend of Osterberg and Geisberg grand cru grapes), which brings chiseled acidity, as opposed to the Geisberg’s ripe fruit personality and licorice quality. Despite the difficult year, this is likely to become a memorable Frédéric Emile. So much so, in fact, that it’s currently impossible to choose between it and the more famous Clos Sainte Hune.  Drinking 2022 to 2045.

James Suckling writes 96 Points | So much mineral and sliced apple character with hints of orange and apple peel. Turns to steely character. Full-bodied, racy and bright. So lively. Great finish. Drink or hold on release. 

Jeb Dunnuck writes 92+ Points | Coming close to a decade after the vintage, the 2014 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is still vivid and racy, with a taut, focused, almost austere style in its ripe citrus, crushed stone, hazelnut, and smoky mineral-driven aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and nicely concentrated, with high yet integrated acidity, this needs another 4-5 years of bottle age, as it's currently austere, firm, and inward. It will be an incredibly long-lived Riesling, but how much pleasure it will ultimately deliver might be questionable.  Drinking after 2027.

Decanter 92 Points | A Pinot Noir blend of grapes from Bearman Bend, the Twomey estate in Anderson Valley, along with Ferrington Vineyard and Monument Tree Vineyard fruit. Lovely, bright, crunchy red fruit, rich cedar spices, dried floral notes, and dusty minerals. Satiny fruit races across the palate, along with plump tannins, electrified by terrific acidity. The fruit concentration is penetrating but never overpowering and is framed by a clove powder and cedarwood dusting on the long finish. Director of Winemaking Justin Hirigoyen has moved the program further away from whole cluster fermentations to avoid too much vintage variation, and readers should expect a consistent fruit-forward, structured style in Twomey's Anderson Valley Pinot Noir.

Umani Ronchi Casal di Serra Verdicchio Vecchie Vigne — Marche 2022

Umani Ronchi's Casal di Serra Vecchie Vigne is the pinnacle of the estate's Verdicchio program — and the 2022 vintage is a stunning expression of what old vines can achieve. Sourced from parcels planted in the early 1970s on the Montecarotto farm in the Marche, the wine is fermented in concrete tanks with native yeasts and aged at length in bottle to develop its signature fullness and complexity. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 93 points, calling it "a wine that is as much of a feeling as it is tasty." A benchmark Verdicchio at an honest price.

The nose is a flower shop: mixed blossoms, green herbs, lemon oil, and white gravel. On the palate, the texture is extraordinary — a seamless, hugging mouthfeel with a pleasant pithy bitterness and a long, sea-salty mineral finish. It delivers the depth and elegance that only old-vine Verdicchio can achieve, and will drink beautifully through 2035.

This is a very concentrated Brunello that combines intense notes of blood orange with a hint of chinotto mixed with complex Mediterranean spices (Helichrysum Thyme and Broom Flowers). 91 Points Decanter | Bringing together grapes from diverse vineyards throughout Montalcino, this midweight, almost-approachable Brunello is focused and vibrant. It takes a bit of coaxing on the nose then divulges sage, orange rind and fennel. Brisk acidity and chalky tannins meet crisp red currant and cranberry, cleansing the palate nicely. A delightful jumping off point to Val di Suga’s single-vineyard offerings, which COO and winemaker Andrea Lonardi has been refining since 2012.

Jeb Dunnuck 92 Points | The 2020 Tierra Alta A 2 Maderas was the producer’s old Crianza, but they are not using that anymore designation, and this youngest is its vintage in the market. With 15 months in French and American oak, it’s powerful and complex in dense black cherry, black licorice, and firm tannins, medium-bodied in style, with 10-15 years more to go. The texture is slate nearly, granitic, seasoned in dried herb.

Winemaker Description

Tierra Alta 2 Maderas de Bodegas Valduero is a serious Spanish red, made by one of the most recognized houses in Ribera del Duero. It stands out for a concentrated and elegant style, where the use of two types of wood seeks aromatic complexity and structure, respecting the fruity profile of the grape and the marked continental character of the area.

Color: Intense pecota red with high and bright layer violet trim, which reflects the typical concentration of the continental climate reds of the Castilian plateau. The tear is dense and leisurely, according to the structured style that characterizes Valduero and its aging wines in different types of wood.

Nose: Aromas of ripe black fruit, such as plums and blackberries, are combined with spicy notes and memories of cocoa and vanilla from the passage through two types of barrels. Balsamic nuances and a slightly torrefied background also arise, in the line of the reds of the Ribera del Duero made with a vocation of complexity and storage.

Mouth: Wide and enveloping entrance, with firm but polished tannins and an acidity that supports the whole well, reflecting the extreme climate of the region. The work in two woods brings volume, creamy touches and a long finish with memories of ripe fruit, sweet spices and a subtle smoked touch, very in keeping with the powerful and elegant style of Valduero.

The Wine Enthusiast 95 Points | Vasse Felix's self-titled middle range often represents the best value for money, in this reviewer's opinion. This is both an excellent example of the range's quality as well as of Margaret River's distinctive Cab style. Layered aromas of tangy redcurrant, raspberry and cranberry are woven with pencil lead, new pavement and tobacco leaf. There's a wonderful lift of crunchy currant fruit on the palate, which counterbalances the big smudgy, savory tannins.

'Son of' the Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon. It carries the structure, power and tannins of classic Cabernet in an earlier drinking, more forward style from fruit sourced from each of the Vasse Felix vineyards.

A remarkably ripe and soft wine. A deep perfume with blackcurrant, blueberry and coffee mocha complexities. Notes of dusty earth and woody perennial herbs mingle with hints of nori, dried forest leaves and wild mushrooms to create an inviting aroma. A light fragrant entrance with blackcurrant, raspberry and potpourri builds to earthy complexities and fine dry dusty tannins which serve to frame the fruit. James Suckling writes 99 Points | Sweet-berry, walnut, licorice and violet aromas that follow through to a full body with round, chewy tannins that are polished and beautiful. Notes of iron, too. The tannins are broad and mouth filling, giving a caressing and exciting texture on the palate. If you give this a year to two to soften, it will deliver even greater richness and flavor. A blend of 2008, 2010 and 2011. Great after 2023.

Luis Gutiérrez of the The Wine Advocate writes 98 Points | The NV Único Reserva Especial 2022 Release is a blend of wines from 2008, 2010 and 2011, mostly Tinto Fino with some Cabernet Sauvignon mixing lots from the Único wines from those years. In the past, the blend was older vintages, but now it's wines that are around the same age as the Único. It has the complexity of mixing terroirs, vintages and grapes with parameters very similar to Único, 14.5% alcohol and good balance with a pH of 3.83 and 5.4 grams of acidity (measured in tartaric acid per liter). In the blend, they look for keeping the style of past blends, combining the more aged notes of the older wines and the freshness of the younger ones. I was very pleasantly surprised by the performance of this Reserva Especial, which seems to be going back to the character of the blends from yesteryear, with more finesse, elegance and nuance. This is perfumed, elegant, harmonious and balanced. It has very fine, already polished tannins and integrated acidity. 2008 and 2010 are cooler years, and they seem to give the blend this freshness and elegance. It has all the components, and especially the balance between all of them, to age nicely in bottle. 16,961 bottles and 201 magnums were filled in June 2018.

Unico Reserva Especial 2022 is a blend of the 2008, 2010, and 2011 vintages and a blend of 95 % Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 5 % Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is suitable for drinking now, but it can be aged for up to 40-60 years, if stored in the ideal conditions. It offers an infinite complexity that is gradually revealed, in every sip, the palate immensely silky and elegant. A true work of art!

Velich Darscho is named after a smaller lake in the village near the estate in Burgenland, Austria. Winemaker Description 

An attractive greenish-yellow colour. Its ageing in foudres has lent it citrus and green chilli pepper aromas, as well as saline notes. In the mouth, it is very structured and tense thanks to its high acidity and minerality. The finish is clean and persistent, with a subtle saline note coming through. This highly complex Sauvignon Blanc tempts you to enjoy it with food.

Block 22 is located on the first terrace of the river Huasco. It has very old, stony soils from the river which have very special qualities: a little clay and a lot of calcareous soil – lime, calcium carbonate – white soils. Characterized by low yields of grapes with very concentrated fresh fruit. In the Atacama Desert in the Huasco valley, the temperatures were fresh, especially at night. Temperatures are kept low because of the constant cool morning breezes blowing in from the Pacific Ocean, as well as the classic “Camanchaca”, a dense fog which comes in from the ocean, helping to regulate the temperatures and ensure an optimum level of humidity in the atmosphere.
