Icardi Barbera d'Asti Tabaren Organic 2024 750ml

Winemaker Description

A wonderfully food-friendly Barbera from one of our favorite producers in Piedmont. Ruby red and medium-bodied with light cherry fruit and great acidity. Lovingly made from organically grown grapes.

Tabaren (from the French “tabarin”) was a venue used for theatre plays, art, and dancing. We are all better dancers after a couple of glasses of wine.

About Icardi

Icardi is a family-run estate based in Castagnole Monferrato in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, farming organically across their vineyards in the Barbera d’Asti and Monferrato appellations. The Icardi family has long been committed to sustainable, organic viticulture — allowing the Barbera grape to express its natural vibrancy, bright acidity, and cherry-driven fruit without synthetic intervention. Their Tabaren bottling is a perennial favorite among sommeliers and wine lovers for its effortless drinkability, food versatility, and honest expression of Piedmontese Barbera at an accessible price.

Icardi Winery, Barolo, Barbaresco, Piedmont

Food Pairings

Pizza, pasta with tomato or meat sauce, grilled chicken, antipasto, salumi, mild cheeses, and vegetable dishes. One of the most versatile food wines in the cellar — equally at home with a weeknight dinner or a long Italian lunch.

Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba 2024 750ml

Pio Cesare Barbera d’Alba — Piedmont 2024

Pio Cesare is one of Piedmont’s most storied and respected producers, with over 140 years of winemaking history in Alba. Their Barbera d’Alba is a benchmark for the variety — a wine that balances the grape’s naturally exuberant acidity and fruit with genuine structure and complexity, drawn from carefully selected calcareous clay and alluvial vineyards in the Barolo zone. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for nearly 12 months in large French and Eastern European oak barrels, the 2024 is a classically built Barbera with real depth and excellent longevity.

The nose is assured and inviting: damson plum, violets, whole peppercorn, and freshly turned earth, with blackberry and ripe dark fruit underneath. On the palate, the wine is generous and full, with a live wire of characteristic Barbera acidity keeping the ripe blue and black fruit fresh and honest. It is approachable now, food-friendly across a wide range of cuisines, and built to age — a must-have from the Pio Cesare lineup.

“Few houses understand Barbera the way Pio Cesare does, and 140 years of practice show clearly in this glass. Damson plum, violets, whole peppercorn, and freshly turned earth set an assured and classic tone. The palate is generous, ripe blue and black fruits fresh and preserved, a live wire of acidity keeping everything honest. Barbera as it should be.” — Wine Enthusiast, 91 points. (Vintage 2024)

La Spinetta Barbera d'Asti Superiore Ca' di Pian Organic 2023 750ml

La Spinetta Barbera d’Asti Superiore Ca’ di Pian Organic — Piedmont 2023

La Spinetta is one of Piedmont’s most celebrated estates, founded by Giorgio Rivetti in Castagnole delle Lanze. Rivetti is widely credited with modernizing Barbera d’Asti — bringing precision viticulture, organic farming, and meticulous cellar work to a variety long underestimated in the region. Ca’ di Pian, sourced from Castagnole delle Lanze and Costigliole d’Asti, is La Spinetta’s entry-level Barbera — yet it consistently punches well above its price, earning critical acclaim vintage after vintage. The estate farms entirely without synthetic pesticides or herbicides, expressing the purest possible fruit from its Piedmontese terroir.

The 2023 is soft, supple, and immediately captivating. A burst of blueberry, black cherry, morello cherry, spice, lavender, menthol, and chocolate gives the wine tremendous appeal and versatility. Fresh, fruit-forward, and beautifully balanced — an especially fine edition of this beloved cuvée.

Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne 2023 750ml

Vietti · Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne · DOC · Piedmont · Italy · 2023

Vietti is one of Piedmont’s most celebrated estates — a Barolo producer of the highest order whose commitment to quality extends all the way down to their Barbera. Tre Vigne (“Three Vineyards”) is Vietti’s Barbera d’Asti, sourced from three distinct sites in the appellation and crafted to showcase the grape’s most compelling qualities: bright, high-toned acidity, vivid red fruit, and the kind of food-friendly energy that makes it one of Piedmont’s most versatile and beloved reds. A wine that punches well above its price point, vintage after vintage.

The 2023 pours ruby red with mineral and vanilla notes on the nose alongside fresh red cherry and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is very well balanced — bright acidity, moderate tannins, and a clean red cherry finish with good complexity and length. Quintessential Barbera: energetic, food-friendly, and endlessly drinkable.

Jeb Dunnuck 91 Points | From vineyards with south, southeast, and southwest exposures, the 2023 Barbera D'Asti Trevie reflects the solar character of the vintage. It pours a saturated magenta/red color and opens with ripe aromas of blackberries, plum, violets, and red fruit accents layered with a resinous undertone of tarry earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers vibrant acidity, ripe tannins, and a savory finish. (Vintage 2023).

  • Producer: Vietti, Castiglione Falletto, Piedmont, Italy
  • Vintage: 2023
  • Appellation: Barbera d’Asti DOC
  • Varietal: 100% Barbera

G.D. Vajra Barbera d'Alba 2025 750ml

Expert Review — Vintage 2024

Jeb Dunnuck — 90 Points
"A bright ruby/magenta color, the 2024 Barbera d’Alba is spicy and lifted on the nose with notes of pepper, fresh herbs, and bright red fruit. The palate is zesty and lively, with electric energy, refreshing focused acidity, and a compact linear feel. This is not a Barbera for volume of richness — it’s about the crunchy, bright fruit, and it will be best enjoyed while it retains its lively nerve. Drink over the next several years."

Winemaker Notes

G.D. Vajra’s Barbera d’Alba comes from a wonderful range of estate vineyards in Piedmont. Fermented for an average of 20 days and aged no less than twelve months in respect of the rhythm of nature, it is a fine blend — charming, rich yet forward.

The 2024 vintage exhibits a brilliant purple hue. On the nose, a celebration of freshness: red berry juice, roses, and fresh plums. The palate is crisp and juicy, layering sweet red and black cherries, spices, and fresh dark berries into a vibrant, aromatic finish that defines the vintage.

G.D. Vajra the quiet achiever – The Real Review

Food Pairings

A natural companion for pasta with tomato-based sauces, wood-fired pizza, grilled sausages, roasted chicken, mushroom risotto, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve slightly chilled (60–65°F) to enhance its refreshing character.

Frasca La Guaragna Nizza 2020 750ml

Winemaker Description

Barbera, along with Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, is widely planted throughout Piemonte. Many Barolo and Barbaresco producers will also make a Barbera mainly because the aging requirement is far shorter allowing them to see a profit from the harvest earlier. In the commune of Nizza, the Barbera grape steps into the spotlight and takes center stage. This is where Barbera reaches its heights of glory.

The Frasca family has 22 hectares of vineyard in Nizza, with vines averaging 30 years of age. Their 2020 Barbera Nizza DOCG opens with an inviting bouquet of dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, intertwined with notes of violet, tobacco, and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich, showcasing intense flavors of ripe black fruits, licorice, and a touch of dark chocolate, balanced by firm tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long and complex, with lingering hints of fruit, spice, and subtle oak nuances.

Renato Ratti Barbera d'Asti Battaglione 2025 750ml

Renato Ratti · Barbera d’Asti · 2025

Named after the heroic Piedmontese regiments of the 18th century, the Battaglione is Renato Ratti’s flagship Barbera d’Asti — and one of the most reliably compelling values in all of Piedmont. Sourced from estate vineyards in the Asti hills and crafted to showcase Barbera at its most expressive, this is a wine that earns its reputation vintage after vintage: ripe, generous, and immediately seductive, yet with the structure and bright acidity that makes it endlessly food-friendly.

The 2025 opens with an intense, inviting nose of ripe red and dark fruits, wild berries, and a delicate spice thread that adds intrigue without weight. On the palate it is full-flavored and lush, with a long, persistent finish that lingers well beyond its price point. Pair with anything from a weeknight pasta to a Sunday bracíole — Barbera was made for the table, and Ratti’s Battaglione is the benchmark.

93 points — Wine Enthusiast | “Mixed berries lounge in a hammock, showing exactly why Barbera earned its reputation as comfort wine with class.” (Prior Vintage)

Clos Mont-Blanc Conca de Barbera Xipella Negre 2021 750ml

Our Professional Review

Oscar Garcia Moncada | Senior Wine Buyer | Xipella” refers to a local Catalan dialect spoken in the Conca de Barberà area. This blend of Samsó (Carignan) and Cabernet Sauvignon is packed with dark fruit — think blackberries, black cherries, and black plum — supported by vibrant acidity and a beautifully persistent finish. An ideal  companion for poultry stews, hanger steak, or grilled tuna.

Winemaker Description

Winemaking and aging | The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature between 25 and 28 °C. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in new and used barrels for 12 to 16 months.

Tasting note | Red wine of intense colour. Powerful ripe fruit aroma, notes of mineral and oak barrel. In the mouth, it presents friendly and tempting, with smooth, well-integrated tannins and a long, persistent finish.

Type of vine | Vines located in the area of the cellar, at an altitude of 470 meters.

Memo Summary Notes

Samso, Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Clos Mont-Blanc Xipella Negre 2021 is a sophisticated red blend from the Conca de Barberà region in Catalonia, Spain. Known for its balance of indigenous and international varieties, this vintage offers a modern expression of a historic wine-growing area.

The Conca de Barberà DO is unique for its limestone soils and high-altitude vineyards (around 470 meters for this specific wine). This elevation provides a thermal contrast between day and night, which helps preserve the acidity and freshness of the grapes, preventing the wine from feeling overly heavy despite its ripeness.

Marietta OVR Series Old Vine Red Blend Lot 74 750ml

Producer Notes

Marietta Cellars has been crafting their Old Vine Red blend in Sonoma County since 1980, releasing it in numbered lots — each one a unique expression of the vintage. Lot 74 is a Zinfandel-based blend of old vine fruit, incorporating Syrah, Petite Sirah, Carignan, Grenache, and Barbera. It jumps out of the glass with lovely bright plum fruit — dark and focused with notes of briar patch and black tea. Medium-bodied with sweet spice, velvety tannins, and electric vibrancy. A wine that strikes a perfect balance between fruit-forward enjoyment and layered sophistication.

Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Carignan, Grenache, Barbera

Zalto Burgundy Glass

This is the largest glass in the Zalto line, and can actually hold a full bottle of wine, though you would never guess that because despite its size, the glass itself still feels light and agile in your hand. The design was not based on being the largest just for the sake of it- as with the entire line, the angles follow that of the Earth tilt angles of 24, 48 and 72 degrees.

The size here is to allow for your biggest, most powerful and expressive wines to fully breathe and develop. For the alcohol to integrate with the fruit notes; the acid to balance the tannins (and, when necessary, the oak.)

Use this glass with mighty Cabernets and Chardonnays, the most powerful Nebbiolo, Barbaresco, Barolo and Barberas, and Pinots that lean towards the fruit-bomb style. It is also fascinating to see what an older vintage, more complex white wine will do here, such as a cellared Gruner Veltliner Smaragd or Reserve.

The height of the glass is 9.1 inches and it is 4.9 inches at its widest part. The volume capacity is 960 ml.

All Zalto glasses are lead free. We recommend using a dishwasher rather than hand washing.

Michele Chiarlo Le Marne Gavi 2024 750ml

Michele Chiarlo Le Marne Gavi DOCG — Piedmont, Italy 2024

Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont’s most respected producers, celebrated for wines of precision and terroir across Barolo, Barbera, and Gavi. Le Marne is their benchmark Gavi: 100% Cortese sourced from clay marl soils rich in iron on high hills near the town of Gavi, where sea breezes from the Ligurian Sea and cool mountain winds from the Apennines create a microclimate ideal for growing Cortese to optimal ripeness. The grapes are hand-harvested with summer bunch thinning for concentration, pressed without crushing, cold-settled, and fermented with indigenous yeasts at low temperature before aging 3–4 months on fine lees in stainless steel — a process that builds complexity while preserving the grape’s signature freshness. The 2024 vintage was exceptional for white grapes: warm and dry from mid-June to mid-September, with grower expertise playing a crucial role in achieving optimal ripeness.

Straw yellow with bright green hues. The nose is elegant and inviting: golden apple, lemon, acacia flower, and bread crust. On the palate, it is crisp and fresh, with bright acidity, a mineral thread from the iron-rich clay marl soils, and a long, savory finish. A perfect food wine in every sense.

  • Producer: Michele Chiarlo, Calamandrana, Piedmont, Italy
  • Vintage: 2024
  • Appellation: Gavi DOCG
  • Varietal: 100% Cortese — clay marl soils, high hills near Gavi
  • Aging: 3–4 months on fine lees, stainless steel
  • ABV: 12.5%
  • Size: 750ml
  • Tasting Notes: Golden apple, lemon, acacia flower, bread crust, crisp acidity, long savory finish
  • Best Paired With: Grilled fish, sushi, seafood risotto, meat carpaccio, light pasta, fresh cheeses

A Piedmont benchmark at an honest price — Michele Chiarlo Le Marne is the standard for what Gavi DOCG can be.

Gaja Sito Moresco Rosso Langhe 2022 750ml

Winemaker Description

The name derives from Moresco, the previous owner of the parcel in Pajorè vineyard which was purchased in 1979.

Abundant snowfall and low temperatures led to an unusually severe, rainy winter, followed by a dry spring. Temperatures picked up again in mid-March, accelerating the plant life cycle.

Unfortunately, the cold temperatures returned in early April with icy winds that channeled through the valleys and affected the lower vineyards, especially in the Barbaresco area.

Other Barbaresco vineyards affected by frost recorded minimal losses of 5%. Our Barolo vineyards are located at higher altitudes and survived the frost unscathed. The summer rolled out dramatically with a bright and windy start, hot and violent midseason, characterized by frequent thunderstorms, and ended hot and dry.

While both benefited from thunderstorms that cooled the land, powdery mildew became a real threat in Barbaresco in July. A redeeming rainfall came at the end of August, refreshing the Barbaresco and Barolo vineyards.

2021 was a late vintage, tending to be dry but cool, resulting in wines of great volume and richness marked by savoriness and length, generous even on the nose, with intense and complex aromas.

The two varieties ferment and macerate separately for three weeks. After the malolactic fermentation, they are blended and then aged in oak for 12 months.

A beautiful violet color atypical of Nebbiolo but reflective of the 2021 vintage where fullness and richness are even present to the eye. The wine has bold notes of blackberry, cherry, blood orange, and bergamot with a touch of flintiness. Medium-structured with lots of juiciness and harmony on the palate all lead to well-balanced acidity and tannin structure with a long finish.

Michele Chiarlo Tortoniano Barolo DOCG 2022 750ml

Michele Chiarlo Tortoniano Barolo DOCG — Piedmont, Italy 2022

Michele Chiarlo has been vinifying the essence of Piedmont since 1956 — one of the region’s most visionary and historically significant producers. Founder Michele Chiarlo was among the first in Italy to introduce malolactic fermentation, and long before DOC laws were adopted, he was already aging his wines in oak and bottle for extended periods. Today the estate farms the finest crus of Barolo, Barbaresco, Nizza, and Gavi, using indigenous grapes — Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cortese, Moscato — to express the full depth of Piedmontese terroir. Tortoniano takes its name from the Tortonian-era soils in which the vines are planted — ancient marine sediments laid down 9 million years ago, rich in magnesium and manganese, that give the wine its distinctive mineral character and longevity. Grape clusters are thinned and harvested up to 15 days later than usual for maximum concentration, then aged two years in large oak casks and one year in bottle before release.

Garnet with brilliant luminous hues. The nose is inviting and complex: rose petals, juniper berries, and fine spices — the unmistakable signature of great Nebbiolo. On the palate, it is elegant with ample structure and silky tannins, and a long, refined finish that speaks clearly of its ancient soils. A Barolo of real depth and class.

92 Points James Suckling  | A subtle wine with spicy depth, showing layers of graphite and oak bark over strawberries, red currants and cinnamon. The medium-bodied, bony palate has firm, dusty tannins and moderate to refreshing acidity.– Aldo Fiordelli. (Vintage 2022).
  • Producer: Michele Chiarlo, Calamandrana, Piedmont, Italy (est. 1956)
  • Vintage: 2022
  • Appellation: Barolo DOCG
  • Varietal: 100% Nebbiolo — Tortonian-era soils (9 million years old), rich in magnesium & manganese
  • Aging: 2 years in large oak casks + 1 year in bottle before release
  • Size: 750ml
  • Tasting Notes: Rose petals, juniper berries, fine spices, elegant structure, silky tannins, long refined finish
  • Best Paired With: Mushroom pasta, roasted fowl, braised beef, matured cheeses, truffle dishes

A 9-million-year-old terroir in a glass — Michele Chiarlo Tortoniano is the benchmark for what classic Barolo can be.

Ceretto Barbaresco Bernadot Organic 2019 750ml

Winemaker Description

The 2019 Bernardot is dark and austere with wonderful nuances of ripe red fruit. Tannins are very silky and delicate in this 2019, showing a lot of finesse, typical from the Barbaresco area. It’s an elegant and very expressive Barbaresco. One of the favorite vineyards of winemaker Alessandro Ceretto.

Expert Reviews

Wine Advocate Monica Larner 95 Points writes | The organic Ceretto 2019 Barbaresco Bernadot shows a broader character and a more open-knit personality compared to the Asili. There is a lot of dark fruit, spice, truffle and earth to frame the medium-build of this elegant wine.  (2019).

Wine Spectator 94 Points | A bright red, delivering a core of cherry and raspberry fruit supported by earth, mineral and wild herbs. Intense, complex and dense, this is solidly built and persists with an aftertaste of dark fruit, mineral and spice. Best from 2025. (2019).

Planteray Rum 5 Years Old Barbados Old Traditional Rum 750ml

Planteray 5 Years Old Barbados Old Traditional Rum — Barbados & Cognac, France (750ml)

Planteray — formerly known as Plantation Rum — is one of the world’s most celebrated craft rum houses, renowned for their meticulous double-aging process and their deep collaboration with the Cognac region of France. The 5 Years Old Barbados is the house’s flagship expression: a very fine blend of Barbados rums, aged for a minimum of five years in ex-Bourbon casks in the Caribbean, then shipped to Château de Bonbonnet in the Cognac region to be refined in old Pierre Ferrand Cognac casks — a finishing technique that adds extraordinary depth, complexity, and a silky elegance that sets Planteray apart from any other rum in its class. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 94 points and a Best Buy designation.

The nose is succulent and inviting: toasted coconut, fudge, mellow brown sugar, and oaky vanilla — classic Barbados style at its most expressive. On the palate, the rum is exceedingly smooth and creamy, opening with vanilla, toasted marshmallow, and vanilla wafers, winding into a long, warming finish tinged with espresso and allspice. It is exceptional straight, on ice, or as the backbone of a premium cocktail.

Wine Enthusiast 94 Best Buy — "This tawny rum offers a mellow brown sugar aroma. The exceedingly smooth palate opens with plenty of creamy vanilla, plus hints of toasted marshmallow and vanilla wafers, winding into a long finish tinged with espresso and allspice."
  • Producer: Planteray (formerly Plantation Rum), Cognac, France
  • Origin: Barbados (distillation) & Cognac, France (finishing)
  • Age: Minimum 5 years
  • Aging: Ex-Bourbon casks in Barbados, then Pierre Ferrand Cognac casks at Château de Bonbonnet
  • Style: Old Traditional Rum (O.T.R.)
  • Size: 750ml
  • Tasting Notes: Toasted coconut, fudge, brown sugar, vanilla, toasted marshmallow, espresso, allspice
  • Best Enjoyed: Neat, on ice, or in premium cocktails (Daiquiri, Old Fashioned, Mai Tai)

A 94-point Best Buy rum from one of the world’s most celebrated craft rum houses — Planteray 5 Years Old Barbados is the benchmark for what double-aged, Cognac-finished Caribbean rum can deliver.

Star Lane Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Barbara County Happy Canyon 2014 750ml

Winemaker's Notes
While showing more purity of blackberry and other dark fruits than the 2013, floral qualities in the aromas suggest a young, tight wine. With air and time, more and more complexity emerges from the glass. The volume of flavor from the aromatics is paired with a tense but elegant palate that is driven by freshness and structure more than weight and richness. The finish is long and hints at a long life for this wine.
