Val di Suga · Rosso di Montalcino DOC · Tuscany · Italy · 2023
Val di Suga is one of Montalcino’s most storied estates, dating to the 1960s and the only producer making three single-vineyard Brunellos from three distinct terroirs: Vigna del Lago in the northeast, Vigna Spuntali in the southwest, and Poggio al Granchio in the southeast. The Rosso di Montalcino draws from younger vines across all three — approximately 40% Vigna del Lago, 30% Poggio al Granchio, and 30% Vigna Spuntali — blending the microclimate diversity of the estate into a single, earlier-drinking expression of Sangiovese Grosso. Aged six months in large Slavonian oak, it is the approachable face of Val di Suga’s Brunello pedigree.
The 2023 vintage in Montalcino was defined by a well-balanced growing season — mild spring, warm summer moderated by ventilation and timely rainfall, and no extreme heat peaks — yielding Sangiovese of exceptional clarity, harmony, and freshness. The Rosso opens with a lively nose of red berry fruits, cherries, redcurrants, and a whisper of spice. On the palate, it is full and plush with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a juicy, lingering finish. Bright, expressive, and built for the table.

Expert Review - Prior Vintage 2022
Jeb Dunnuck 90 Points | The 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino is a delightful offering. Pouring a youthful ruby color, it reveals a fruity bouquet of candied raspberries, roses, and spiced orange. Medium-bodied, it boasts an elegant mouthfeel, fine tannins, a juicy mid-palate, and a clean finish. It's drinking fantastically now and will continue to drink well over the next 5-6 years.
Vinous 90 Points | The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is mentholated and fresh, with dried strawberries and crushed stones wafting up from the glass. This is soft-textured and pure in feral form, with ripe red berries and spices cascading throughout. It leaves a gentle tension and crunchy sensation while tapering off poised and with medium length.
