Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points | The 2023 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard is a beautiful wine and the starting point for the range from Freedom Hill. It checks a lot of boxes with minerality, fruit, and just outstanding complexity and tension. Notes of cranberry, cherry, bright spices, orange zest, and dried earth are complemented by a chalky texture, refined tannins, and bright, mouthwatering acidity, culminating in a long finish. It’s one of the many outstanding values in the wide range of Patricia Green Cellars.
Memo Summary Notes
The 2023 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir "Freedom Hill Vineyard" is a standout bottling from one of Oregon's most respected Pinot Noir producers.
Freedom Hill is a legendary site in the Mt. Pisgah-Polk County AVA, known for its ancient marine sedimentary soils (Bellpine) that produce wines with significant structure and power.
The 2023 vintage in Oregon is being hailed by winemakers (including Jim Anderson of Patricia Green) as a "perfect" year with ideal weather that allowed for beautiful fruit concentration and balance.
The earthy, savory undertones of this wine make it a dream with duck confit, mushroom-based dishes, or cedar-plank salmon.

Choose when time is of the essence
We are proud to be able to offer a Pinot Noir from one of Oregon’s premier vineyard sites at a price that many entry level, blended Pinot Noirs go for. Freedom Hill is known for dark, elaborately pigmented wines with a wealth of fruit, generous mouthfeel and a dollop of tannins that gives the wine framework and dimension. While not a lightweight this is far from some bruising or sultry wine. This has intense red/black fruits, earthy spices and just a bit of grip. This will be excellent in its youth but will have solid footing and great upside for well over a decade.
"An enticing blend of dried roses, peppery spice and woodland berries wafts up from the 2022 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard. This is vividly fruit-focused yet crisp in feel, with tactile minerals adding a crunchy sensation as tart red and blue fruits swirl throughout. It tapers off youthfully tense, leaving a staining of primary concentration while silty tannins frame the experience well."

""The 2022 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard pours a vibrant ruby/magenta color and is highly expressive in the glass, with notes of framboise, candied roses, sweet herbs, and fresh earth. It's vibrant and energetic on the palate, with a ripe but more linear feel, finely coiled tannins, and a tapered finish. Drink it over the next 10 years."

"The 2022 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard is sourced from several different sections of the vineyard planted at various times to various clones, including Pommard planted in 1978, Wadenswil planted in 2002 and 2006, Dijon planted in 2007 and Coury planted in 2010. Various percentages of whole cluster were used during fermentation, and the wine was matured in around 17% new French oak. It opens with flinty tones that give way to wild berry fruit, oolong tea leaves, Angostura bitters and bergamot. The light-bodied palate is silky and refreshing with understated, earth-laced flavors and a long, spicy finish."
