One of the great rarities of the Port world, Maynard’s 1940 White Colheita is an extraordinary single-harvest White Port from Portugal’s historic Douro Valley. Produced from grapes harvested in 1940 and matured in seasoned oak casks, this exceptionally old Colheita offers the remarkable concentration, complexity and elegance that can develop only through prolonged maturation in wood.
Maynard’s is closely associated with the historic van Zeller family, one of the great names of the Portuguese wine trade. The brand honors Walter Maynard, an ancestor of the family and one of the early merchants involved in shipping Port wine from Portugal to England. Today, the Maynard’s range continues that tradition through a collection of classic and exceptionally rare Ports.

Winemaking & Aging
Unlike a conventional Vintage Port, a Colheita is produced entirely from a single harvest and develops its character through extended maturation in wood. The 1940 Maynard’s White Colheita was carefully selected and matured in seasoned oak casks, where slow oxidative aging transformed the wine and created the extraordinary richness, mellowness and complexity associated with very old Colheita Ports.
Over time, the fresh fruit character of the original white grapes evolves into layers of dried and preserved fruit, nuts, caramelized flavors and spice while maintaining the natural acidity that gives fine old White Port its remarkable freshness and balance.
Tasting Notes
A beautiful golden-amber color immediately reveals the wine’s extraordinary maturity. The bouquet is rich and expressive, showing concentrated aromas of peach preserves and jam, dried fruit, toasted nuts, caramel and warm spice.
On the palate, it is wonderfully complex and harmonious, combining mature sweetness with balancing freshness. Rich fruit and nutty flavors unfold slowly across the palate, followed by subtle oxidative and oak-aged nuances. The texture is silky and luxurious, leading to a long, elegant and persistent finish.
Serving Suggestions
Serve slightly chilled at approximately 12–13°C / 54–55°F. Because of its extraordinary age and complexity, this Port is particularly rewarding when served on its own in a proper Port or white-wine glass, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass.
Food Pairing
An exceptional partner for desserts featuring almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts, as well as crème brûlée, custard-based desserts, dried-fruit cakes and other egg-based pastries. It can also be enjoyed with mature or blue cheeses, including Roquefort, or simply served by itself as a contemplative after-dinner wine.
About Maynard’s
Maynard’s is the flagship Port brand associated with Fernando and Álvaro van Zeller. The name pays tribute to Walter Maynard, born in 1652, an ancestor of the van Zeller family and one of the early merchants connected with the export of Port wine from Portugal to England. The Maynard’s collection celebrates this centuries-old Port tradition, with particular emphasis on aged Tawnies, Colheitas, Vintage Ports and other rare releases.
A remarkable survivor from the 1940 harvest, this extraordinarily mature White Colheita offers both a piece of Port history and a rare opportunity to experience the remarkable longevity of the Douro’s traditional white varieties.
