Luxardo Maraschino is one of the world’s great spirits — and one of the very few liqueurs produced by true distillation rather than simple maceration. The recipe traces its origins to the apothecaries of the Dominican monastery at Zara (now Zadar, Croatia), where Marasca cherries and honey were first combined into a medicinal elixir. In 1821, Girolamo Luxardo founded the distillery that would bring this recipe to the world, and the family has been making it the same way ever since.
Distilled from Marasca sour cherries — fruit, pits, leaves, and stems — then aged two years in Finnish ash-wood vats before bottling, Luxardo Maraschino is complex, funky, and utterly distinctive. It is the essential bottle for any serious cocktail bar: the backbone of a classic Aviation, Last Word, or Hemingway Daiquiri, and the secret weapon that can kick any cocktail into overdrive. Clear in the glass, with an intensely aromatic nose of bitter cherry, almond, and floral notes — nothing else tastes quite like it.
