Lustau Vermut Rojo — Jerez, Spain NV
Emilio Lustau is one of Jerez’s most celebrated sherry houses, founded in 1896 and long regarded as the benchmark for quality in the region. Their Vermut Rojo brings the same craft and terroir-driven philosophy to vermouth — a red vermouth built on a base of Lustau’s own Jerez wines, infused with a proprietary blend of botanicals that reflects the aromatic complexity of Andalusia. Rich, seductive, and deeply Spanish, this is vermouth with genuine character and a sense of place.
The nose is immediately captivating: orange peel, coriander seeds, and a fragrant whiff of old roses, followed by darker notes of mature red fruit and cinnamon. On the palate, it is very round and velvety — sweet but beautifully balanced, with the bitterness of Cinchona bark kept delicate and refined. Citrus peel, plum, and red grape juice lead to a smooth, bittersweet finish with a touch of toasted oak. Hints of gentian and absinthe emerge with time.

Nose: quite seductive, starting on citrus notes. The orange peel and coriander seeds are in the foreground. A fragrant whiff of old roses. Then darker notes, like mature red fruits. Cinnamon as well. Very round, it’s only after some time that you get hints of gentian or absinth.
Mouth: very velvety again, with a great balance. Definitely on the sweet side – the bitterness of the Cinchona bark is rather delicate here. Citrus peel again, hints of plums and red grape juice. Smooth finish, bittersweet with a touch of toasted oak.
