When Angelo Gaja — the most celebrated name in Piedmontese wine — decided to plant roots in Bolgheri, he did not do it quietly. After four years of negotiations with a single landowner (the estate’s name, Ca’ Marcanda, means “house of endless negotiations” in local dialect), he acquired the property in 1996 and set about building one of the most ambitious wine estates in all of Tuscany. Promis is Ca’ Marcanda’s entry-level wine — but “entry-level Gaja” is a very different thing from entry-level anything else. A blend of Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese from the estate’s Bolgheri vineyards, the 2023 is a classic, expressive vintage: bright, structured, and unmistakably coastal Tuscan in character.
The color is a vivid, bright ruby-red. The nose is immediately captivating: cinnamon, star anise, and warm spice frame pronounced red fruits — strawberry, black cherry, and a hint of dried violet. On the palate, the tannins are juicy and persistent, building through the mid-palate to a finish defined by a beautiful coastal salinity — the classic hallmark of great Bolgheri vintages.
