Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga — Tuscany, Italy 2021
Felsina is not simply one of Chianti Classico's great estates — it is the benchmark for what Castelnuovo Berardenga Sangiovese can be. Situated at the southernmost tip of the Chianti Classico zone, the estate's galestro-rich soils and warmer microclimate produce a wine of singular boldness, depth, and wild Tuscan character. The 2021 Berardenga is a super-classic expression of the house style: pure, terroir-driven, and built with the kind of sophistication that only comes from decades of meticulous winemaking. Antonio Galloni of Vinous awarded it 92 points and called it "a wine to consider buying by the case." In half bottle format, it is the perfect pour for a great weeknight Tuscan dinner.
The nose is boisterous and expressive from the first pour: dark cherry, dried earth, leather, warm spice, and tobacco — all the hallmarks of Castelnuovo Berardenga in a single glass. On the palate, it keeps getting better with air, revealing layers of dark fruit, mineral grip, and a long, structured finish with an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable. Decant briefly or simply let it open in the glass.
Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 92 — "Boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. A super-classic example of the house style with an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable. A wine to consider buying by the case."

Ruby red with deep intensity and hue. Fruity, fine and elegant aromas dominated by wild berries, along with array of spicy notes. Fruity on the palate with good tannins and a lingering finish.
(Vintage 2020) James Suckling 92 Points: Plums, cherry stones, button mushrooms, white pepper and bark on the nose. Lemon and cardamom too. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Savory.
(Vintage 2020) Wine Spectator 91 Points: A charming, harmonious Chianti Classico, this exudes cherry, plum and thyme flavors, with elements of earth and mineral. Delivers dense tannins that exert influence on the finish, yet this remains balanced.
(Vintage 2020) Jeb Dunnuck 91 Points: A pure and open wine out of the gate, the 2020 Chianti Classico Berardenga is fresh with aromas of pine sap, anise, and cherry lozenge. Medium bodied with fine tannin and a modest but refreshing finish, this is a fantastic entry point for the Felsina range, for casual drinking with braised meats or Bolognese.
(Vintage 2020) Decanter 90 Points: In the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, Fèlsina’s expansive vineyards are at the luminous southeastern tip of Chianti Classico. The Berardenga label represents a plentiful annual production of 250,000 bottles. On first impression, the 2020 is overtly ripe, yet with time prune cake and vanilla notes subside, allowing wild herb and savoury nuances to step in. The chewy tannins are long and supple, with ample fruit density to balance.
