Fattoria dei Barbi is one of Montalcino's most historic and respected estates, with a winemaking tradition stretching back centuries. The estate's vineyards are planted on the southeastern slopes of Montalcino, where galestro and clay-limestone soils combine with the area's warm, dry climate to produce Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello) of exceptional concentration and aromatic complexity. The southeastern exposure delivers ripe, structured fruit while preserving the freshness and acidity essential to Brunello's legendary longevity.
Following harvest, the wine undergoes extended maceration and fermentation before aging for a minimum of five years — including at least two years in large Slavonian oak casks — in accordance with Brunello di Montalcino DOCG regulations. The result is a wine of classical structure, with the depth and tannic architecture to evolve gracefully over decades.
The 2019 opens with a clean, bright aromatic profile of plum, dark cherry, blueberry, and orange peel, with notes of cedar, nutmeg, and a mentholated freshness. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with firm, polished, slightly chalky tannins, rich texture, and a long, structured finish with hints of licorice and wild herbs.
