Winemaker's Notes
An exquisite expression of Premier Cru Burgundy, Domaine Faiveley Volnay Frémiets 2023 captures the remarkable finesse, aromatic complexity and velvety texture that distinguish the finest Pinot Noirs of the Côte de Beaune.
Beautiful ruby-red in color, this sophisticated Burgundy reveals an enchanting bouquet of ripe red cherries, wild raspberries and delicate dark berries, accented by subtle spice, gentle floral notes and a refined touch of oak.
On the palate, succulent red and black fruits unfold with elegance and precision. Fine, silky tannins create a luxurious, almost weightless texture, while refreshing acidity lends vibrancy and balance. Gentle spice and delicate earthy nuances add complexity, leading to a beautifully harmonious, lingering finish.
Refined rather than powerful, this exceptional Premier Cru showcases the seductive, graceful personality of Volnay, offering aromatic intensity, beautiful structure and remarkable finesse.
About the Winery
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's most distinguished historic family-owned wine estates.
For seven generations, the Faiveley family has cultivated an extraordinary collection of vineyards throughout the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, establishing an international reputation for wines that authentically express the character of Burgundy's diverse terroirs.
Today, seventh-generation Erwan Faiveley and his sister Eve continue the family's winemaking legacy, working with Technical Director and winemaker Jérôme Flous to produce wines of exceptional purity, balance and elegance.
Among the estate's remarkable Côte de Beaune holdings, Volnay Frémiets stands apart for its distinctive finesse, delicate structure and beautifully expressive Pinot Noir character.
The Vineyard & Terroir – Les Frémiets Premier Cru
Situated on the gently sloping hillsides of Volnay, immediately adjacent to the celebrated appellation of Pommard, Les Frémiets is one of the village's distinguished Premier Cru vineyards.
Domaine Faiveley's small 0.74-hectare parcel occupies a privileged mid-slope position, benefiting from eastern and southeastern exposure that captures the morning sunlight and encourages balanced grape ripening.
The vineyard features well-drained clay-limestone soils enriched with particularly fine clay, contributing to the wine's remarkable aromatic delicacy and silky, refined tannins.
The estate's oldest vines were planted in 1950, lending depth, concentration and complexity, while additional plantings from 2014 contribute vitality and fresh fruit expression.
The vineyard is affectionately known as "the Chambolle of the Côte de Beaune", a tribute to the graceful, velvety character of its wines.
Although Les Frémiets borders Pommard, an appellation often associated with powerful and structured Pinot Noir, this exceptional vineyard expresses a notably different personality, emphasizing elegance, softness and finesse.
Domaine Faiveley harvests this parcel relatively early to preserve its delicate aromatics, natural freshness and characteristic refinement.
The 2023 Vintage
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy produced generous, expressive Pinot Noir, with favorable periods of warmth and sunshine allowing the grapes to achieve excellent maturity.
Careful vineyard management and precise harvest timing were essential to maintaining the balance between ripe fruit and natural acidity.
In Volnay, the vintage produced appealing wines combining bright aromatics, supple tannins and elegant structure.
Domaine Faiveley's 2023 Frémiets reflects these qualities, offering expressive berry fruit, delicate spice and beautifully polished tannins while preserving the finesse associated with this exceptional Premier Cru vineyard.
Winemaking & Aging
Domaine Faiveley approaches its Volnay Frémiets with meticulous attention to preserving the delicate character of Pinot Noir and the exceptional finesse of the vineyard.
Careful fruit selection, thoughtful fermentation and controlled extraction help develop aromatic complexity and elegant structure without overwhelming the wine's natural delicacy.
Traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques and carefully managed maturation emphasize the wine's vibrant fruit, refined tannins and distinctive terroir expression.
The result is a beautifully harmonious Premier Cru with a silky texture, elegant aromatics and excellent aging potential.
Food Pairings
This elegant Premier Cru Burgundy pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast, veal tenderloin, herb-roasted chicken, roasted guinea fowl, pork medallions, mushroom risotto, rabbit with mustard sauce and delicate game dishes.
Its supple tannins and refreshing acidity make it particularly appealing alongside poultry, earthy mushroom preparations, truffle dishes and refined French cheeses.
Suggested Serving Temperature: 57–61°F (14–16°C).
