Expert Rating
93 Points James Suckling: I love the black nose - licorice, violet and elderberry - of this impressive Nuits-Saint-Georges. Impressive ripeness and substance for the challenging vintage. The ample fine tannins are already very well integrated. Bold licorice finish. Drink or hold.
About the Winery
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's most distinguished family-owned wine estates.
For seven generations, the Faiveley family has cultivated an extraordinary collection of vineyards throughout Burgundy, building a reputation for wines that faithfully express the unique character of the region's finest terroirs.
Today, seventh-generation Erwan Faiveley guides the estate alongside Technical Director and winemaker Jérôme Flous. Together, they combine traditional Burgundian craftsmanship with meticulous vineyard management and modern winemaking precision.
Nuits-Saint-Georges holds a particularly important place in the Faiveley family's history, as it remains the estate's historic home and the foundation of its nearly two centuries of winemaking heritage.
The Vineyard & Terroir – Les Montroziers
Les Montroziers is a distinctive Nuits-Saint-Georges cuvée produced from approximately 4.84 hectares of vineyard parcels distributed throughout the appellation, from northern to southern sites and from lower slopes to hillside vineyards.
This carefully composed blend captures the diversity of Nuits-Saint-Georges terroir, combining the aromatic refinement of stony soils with the concentration and structure of limestone-rich vineyard sites.
Among the important contributing parcels are Les Argillats, where exceptionally pebbly soils encourage delicate aromatics, and Les Lavières, characterized by marl, silt and hard limestone that contribute depth and concentration.
The vines were planted at different times between 1928 and 2012, allowing mature-vine complexity to complement the freshness and vibrancy of younger plantings.
The cuvée takes its name from Maurice Colrat de Montrozier, a French statesman and great-uncle who witnessed the June 1945 wedding of Guy and Yvonne Faiveley. Their marriage united two important family traditions: Burgundian winemaking and the French railway industry.
This historic connection gives Les Montroziers a particularly meaningful place in the Faiveley portfolio, celebrating both family heritage and the exceptional diversity of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
The 2021 Vintage
The 2021 vintage was particularly demanding for Burgundy's winegrowers, with severe spring frosts, cool temperatures and periods of unsettled weather significantly reducing yields.
Careful vineyard management, rigorous fruit selection and precise harvest decisions were essential to achieving quality.
Despite these challenges, Domaine Faiveley produced a beautifully balanced Les Montroziers, distinguished by impressive fruit ripeness, delicate aromatics and finely integrated tannins.
The 2021 vintage emphasizes freshness, aromatic precision and traditional Burgundian elegance, delivering a wine with impressive depth without excessive weight.
Winemaking & Aging
Domaine Faiveley employs traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques designed to preserve the purity of Pinot Noir and express the distinctive character of its vineyard parcels.
Carefully selected grapes undergo fermentation and controlled maceration to develop the wine's aromatic complexity, color and refined tannic structure.
Maturation in French oak barrels contributes subtle spice, texture and additional complexity while preserving the wine's expressive fruit and delicate balance.
The result is a harmonious Nuits-Saint-Georges with a beautifully rounded palate, silky tannins and a graceful finish.
Food Pairings
This elegant Burgundy pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast, beef tenderloin, grilled lamb, roasted guinea fowl, veal, venison, wild mushroom risotto, coq au vin and aged French cheeses.
Its rich fruit character, balanced acidity and polished tannins make it particularly appealing alongside roasted meats, game and traditional Burgundian cuisine.
Suggested Serving Temperature: 57–61°F (14–16°C).
