Winemaker's Notes
An exceptional expression of Premier Cru Burgundy from an exclusive, family-owned vineyard, Domaine Faiveley Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Écu Monopole 2024 combines richness, precision and remarkable elegance.
Deep ruby-red in color, this beautifully crafted Pinot Noir reveals captivating aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries and blackberries, accented by delicate spice and a refreshing hint of mint. The palate is lively yet generous, offering concentrated red and black fruit, silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle notes of sweet spice and menthol add complexity, leading to a long, refined and beautifully balanced finish.
Expressive and inviting in its youth, this Premier Cru also possesses the structure and concentration to develop gracefully with bottle age.
About the Winery
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's most historic and prestigious family-owned wine estates. Today, seventh-generation Erwan Faiveley continues the family's nearly two-century legacy, working alongside Technical Director and winemaker Jérôme Flous to produce wines of exceptional purity, character and terroir expression.
The estate owns an impressive collection of vineyards across Burgundy, including numerous Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites. Clos de l'Écu holds a particularly special place within the Faiveley portfolio, reflecting the family's commitment to preserving Burgundy's most distinctive vineyard sites.
The Vineyard & Terroir – An Exclusive Monopole
Clos de l'Écu is a historic, 2.37-hectare (5.86-acre) Premier Cru vineyard in Beaune, acquired by François Faiveley in 2003. The vineyard is a monopole, meaning the entire classified vineyard is under the exclusive ownership of Domaine Faiveley.
Its history reaches back to the Middle Ages, when the vineyard's name was associated with payments owed to the Dukes of Burgundy.
Facing directly south, Clos de l'Écu benefits from excellent sunlight and naturally well-drained, gravelly and stony soils with relatively little clay. Its warm, early-ripening conditions have earned it the affectionate nickname "Côte-Rôtie" within the Faiveley estate.
This exceptional terroir produces a distinctive Pinot Noir combining ripe fruit, impressive concentration, finely textured tannins and the unmistakable elegance of Beaune Premier Cru.
The 2024 Vintage
The 2024 growing season in Burgundy presented significant challenges, including unusually wet weather and disease pressure. Careful vineyard management and rigorous fruit selection were essential to producing high-quality wines.
Clos de l'Écu's naturally well-drained soils and sunny southern exposure provided important advantages, allowing Domaine Faiveley to craft a wine that balances expressive fruit with the freshness, precision and refinement characteristic of the vintage.
Winemaking & Aging
Grapes are harvested and carefully sorted by hand. Traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques, including controlled extraction during fermentation, preserve the purity of Pinot Noir while developing its color, aromatic complexity and tannic structure.
The wine is matured for approximately 14 months in fine-grained French oak barrels, with around one-third new oak. This measured approach enhances texture and complexity while allowing the vineyard's distinctive fruit and mineral character to remain at the forefront.
Food Pairings
A sophisticated and versatile Burgundy, beautifully paired with duck breast, roasted chicken, filet mignon, slow-roasted lamb, veal with caramelized vegetables, wild mushroom risotto and aged cheeses.
Why We Love It
