Winemaker Description
The name “Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare” comes from an ancient settlement at the top of the hill where this winery is now placed. Old farmhouses and a tower mark an ancient Etruscan culture who once worked the land here in the Val d’Orcia facing the town of Montalcino.
The estate now extends over forty hectares, eight of which are vineyards for Sangiovese Grosso and two of which are olive groves surrounding the old farmhouses.
The Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG is fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures to maximize the extraction from the skins. The wines age in humongousSlavonian oak barrels for thirty months followed by twenty months inFrench barriques. The wines are blended and aged in bottle for four more months before release.
The nose is very intense and lingering with hints of cherry fruit and spices. Velvety tannins and aromatic on the finish. Pair with well marbled cuts of steak with olive oil poached potatoes and fresh rosemary, braised shoulder of pork with roasted apples, or crumbly cheeses.
Wine Spectator 91 Points "Plum, cherry and almond flavors are framed by hints of orange peel, blood, earth and tobacco in this complex, firmly-structured red. Compact for now, ending with mouth-coating tannins. Best from 2025 through 2040. 5,000 cases made, 3,500 cases imported."
