Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva — Sardinia, Italy 2021
Sella & Mosca is Sardinia's most storied and important winery, founded in 1899 near Alghero in the northwest of the island. With over 500 hectares under vine, it is one of Europe's largest single-estate wineries — and its Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva is the benchmark expression of the island's most celebrated indigenous red grape. Cannonau — known on the mainland and in France as Grenache — has been grown in Sardinia for centuries and thrives in the island's sun-drenched, wind-swept terrain. The Riserva designation requires extended aging, adding structure and complexity to the grape's naturally generous fruit character.
The 2021 pours a ruby red with garnet hues, translucent and brilliant. The nose is bright and refined — fresh violet, red berries, plum, blackcurrant, sun-dried tomatoes, and oriental spices with a savory, lightly smoky character. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, solid, and well-structured, with fine tannins, fresh bursts of balsam and medicinal herbs, and a long finish that moves through toasted hints before returning to the spice route. Warm, balanced, and unmistakably Sardinian.
"Red berries, herbs, smoke and sun-dried tomatoes on the nose. Lightly peppery and spicy on the palate, medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a tasty finish." — James Suckling, 92 Points

Choose when time is of the essence
The ruby red color with garnet hues, translucent and brilliant, announces bright, mature and refined aromas. The fresh scent of violet is perfectly integrated by notes of jam, plums, blackcurrants and oriental spices. The palate is solid, wellstructured and warm in its embrace, but always well-balanced, thanks also to fresh bursts of balsam and medicinal herbs and berries. The aftertaste presents toasted hints before returning to the spice route.
Expert Reviews - Prior Vintage 2020
James Suckling writes: Clean and focused with blackberry and dark-bark aromas and flavors. Medium to full body and firm, creamy tannins with length and focus. Lavender and berries with chocolate undertones. Very polished and flavorful. Drink or hold. - James Suckling 94
Eric Guido writes: Dried violets give way to lavender, dusty blackberry and sage as the 2020 Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva blossoms in the glass. It’s silky in texture yet cool-toned and crisp with ripe wild berries that cascade across a core of vibrant acidity. A subtle coating of fine tannin lingers as the 2020 finishes pleasantly chewy and long, leaving a licorice tinge. Drinking 2024 to 2028. - Vinous 90
Walter Speller writes: Mid-to-deep ruby. Appealing raspberry, damson and violet nose with some complexity to it; a kind of new-generation Cannonau focusing on fruit and freshness rather than concentration and richness. Finesse and succulence on the palate. Looking for a red to go with grilled or pan-fried fish? This is your wine. Drinking 2023 to 2028. - Jancis Robinson 17
