Feudo Montoni Vigna del Core Perricone — Sicilia, Italy 2022
Feudo Montoni is one of Sicily's most important organic estates, farming ancient indigenous varieties in the rugged interior highlands near Cammarata — far from the coast, at elevations that bring cool nights and dramatic diurnal swings. Their Vigna del Core is dedicated to Perricone, one of Sicily's rarest and most historically significant red grapes, nearly extinct until producers like Montoni championed its revival. Grown organically and harvested from old vines, this is a wine of genuine character and place.
The 2022 pours a ruby red with light violet reflections. The nose is earthy and complex — grilled herbs, blackberries, dried flowers, warm spice, and exotic notes of cocoa and licorice. On the palate, it's silky-smooth and deeply textural, with ripe red and black fruit driven by vibrant acidity and a coating of fine, dusty tannins. The finish is long, fresh, and beautifully polished — a total pleasure to taste.

Core is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. The name has its origins in a vineyard that has always been called, “core,” by the farmers of Montoni. In Sicilian, “core” means heart. In fact, seen from above, the vineyard is the shape of a heart.
Ruby red in color with light violet reflections. Notes of plum, blueberry, and black pepper, intermingle with those of cocoa and licorice. Fresh, soft and round on the palate with bold tannins that are typical of this variety, well-polished.
Food parings: Red meat, minestrone soup, medium aged cheeses.
Prior Vintages 2021, 2020, & 2019
Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate writes 91 Points | There is a lot of buzz surrounding the Perricone grape. The Feudo Montoni 2021 Sicilia Perricone Core opens to a medium dark color with spice, fresh-cut cedarwood and untreated tobacco. There is a lot of dark primary fruit and some sour berry nuances, but the wine feels quite smooth in texture and is ready to drink now. (Vintage 2021)
Eric Guido of Vinous writes 91 Points | The 2021 Perricone Core seduces with a perfumed blend of lavender and violets accentuating crushed blackberries. Soft, round and soothing, this impresses further with its ripe wild berry fruits and inner florals, all guided by juicy acidity. Wild blueberries and a sweet herbal flourish define the finale, as the Perricone Core tapers off long and potent yet remarkably fresh. This is a total pleasure to taste. (Vintage 2021).
Wine Advocate 92 Points: The Perricone grape (also known locally as Guarnaccia Nera) offers rich concentration and ample power, but it also shows a rustic side with hints of bramble and bitterness that are part of its DNA. The certified organic Feudo Montoni 2019 Sicilia Perricone Core is very true to the varietal with a noticeable richness, a smoky or spicy character and plenty of sweet cherry and blackberry. The mouthfeel is not too powerful, and the tannins are moderate, but this release of 26,000 bottles remains your proverbial steak wine nonetheless. (Vintage 2019)
Wine Enthusiast 91 Points | Hints of firewood and camphor light up behind black cherries, vanilla, cedar and spices on the nose of this red from the Perricone grape. Fresher notes of tomatoes and herbs come out on the palate. An undercurrent of stony brininess and more berries come through at the back, with the tension held by mellowing tannins but vibrant acid. (Vintage 2020).
