94 Vinous: The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with a pretty blend of citrus-tinged blackberries, violets and sweet spice. Textures of pure silk and cooling acidity beautifully complement racy red and black fruits. I love the momentum and purity here. It leaves a steely mineral concentration to mingle with fine tannins and inner rose tones. Year after year, Pian delle Vigne continues to improve through its graceful lift.
92 Jeb Dunnuck: The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a bright red color and offers a generous, lifted bouquet of polished leather, ripe red cherries, toasted cedar, and crushed flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it has an earthy, iron-tinged edge on the palate, with ripe tannins, brisk acidity, and salty accents that frame the finish. Drink 2026-2038.
Winemaker Notes
Pian delle Vigne Rosso di Montalcino is ruby red. The nose expresses notes of citrus fruit and fresh red fruit especially cherries and strawberries, together with pleasant hints of lavender and tobacco. The palate is fresh and fruity with vibrant tannins that accompany a long, savory finish, closing with a floral aftertaste.
Description: Crafted at the historic Pian delle Vigne estate owned by the renowned Antinori family, this Brunello is a classic expression of 100% Sangiovese grown in the prestigious vineyards surrounding Montalcino in southern Tuscany. The estate takes its name from a 19th-century railway station once located on the property, reflecting Antinori’s long-standing connection to the region.
The 2021 vintage offers an elegant and structured profile, opening with complex aromas of ripe cherry, red currant, and plum, layered with notes of dried rose, tobacco, leather, and sweet baking spice. On the palate, the wine is refined and beautifully balanced, with firm yet polished tannins supporting flavors of dark cherry, wild berries, earthy minerals, and subtle oak. A long, savory finish highlights the depth and aging potential that define great Brunello.
Aged traditionally in large oak casks, Pian delle Vigne Brunello captures the purity, structure, and longevity that have made the wines of Montalcino among Italy’s most celebrated. Enjoy with braised meats, grilled steak, wild game, truffle dishes, or aged Pecorino cheeses, or cellar for additional complexity over the coming decade.
