In a constant quest for excellence, these vines have been for several years now replanted, grafted and their soils ploughed mechanically in order to obtain grapes of the utmost quality. A fresh climated, combined with the natural ventilation brought by the nearby ocean, allow for the creation of lively and generous wines, born out of a blend of a majority of Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon.
The vineyard, situated in the northern Médoc, saw more extreme weather conditions and less rain than Cos d’Estournel. Fortunately, it was able to compensate for climatic conditions thanks to the age of its vines and their roots, which forever dig deeper from one year to the next, light ploughing efforts—carried out more intensely than usual—and the fresh air brought by the nearby Gironde Estuary.
The 2019 vintage of G d’Estournel delivers vivacity and balance; it is at once fresh and rich, vigorous and discreet. Vibrant and highly spirited, with unmistakable notes of pepper, it is a long, silky wine, whose nose of blackcurrant and violet is highlighted by aromas of eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary.
Jane Anson writes: Well judged, carefully-extracted and balanced, with blackcurrant fruit and a silky, easy-going texture. It's an easy value recommendation, and a great job in a vintage that was not a slam dunk at all levels. - Jane Anson 92
Jeb Dunnuck writes: Coming from the Médoc, the 2019 G D'Estournel is a rock-solid effort that has lots to love. Giving up pure, ripe black cherry fruit as well as tobacco and scorched earth notes, it's medium-bodied, has a round, nicely balanced mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. It's beautifully done and well worth drinking any time over the coming 10-12 years. Jeb Dunnuck
Lisa Perrotti-Brown writes:A blend of of 86% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc, aging in 20% new barriques, the 2019 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel (13.53% alcohol) has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and leaps from the glass with vivacious scents of ripe red and black plums, black cherries and mulberries with touches of spice cake, violets and star anise. Medium-bodied, the palate has bags of energetic black berry flavors with a rugged frame of chewy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing with an herbal lift. Robert Parker Wine Advocate
James Lawther MW writes: Full, round and fleshy. A little sweetness on attack then a juicy flow. Perhaps a little light on the mid palate but fresh, fruity and accessible. - Jancis Robinson 16
James Molesworth writes: Fresh and open-knit, showing breezy damson plum and cherry notes laced with a sanguine hint. Streamlined and unadorned finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. - Wine Spectator
Jane Anson writes: High Merlot levels that clearly reached full ripeness in the summer heat, just about avoiding the tip over into fig character. Accessible already, but should drink well for a good decade. Ripe blueberry and blackberry fruits, touches of vanilla bean, the freshness from its location close to the Gironde estuary is clear and necessary, and this is an enjoyable Goulée.
