Monica Larner writes:  The G.D. Vajra 2022 Barbera d'Alba is a nicely concentrated effort with dark cherry fruit, blackberry and cinnamon-like sensations from the grape skins. With that extra density comes extra fruit weight and a powerful 15% alcohol content. The wine does carry muscle for sure, but the results are firm and tight.

The most interesting portfolio of wines from Piedmont, in my onion, is the one thoughtfully put together by G.D. Vajra. Given the variety of flavors and the many local grapes used, my annual tasting at this estate is always one of my favorites. This year I tasted with Isidoro Vaira, one of three siblings that runs the winery with sister Francesca and brother Giuseppe. Parents Milena and Aldo Vaira are also busily involved at the winery, making this a dynamic, family-run reality.

Tank-fermented. 15 days’ maceration. Malo in tank. Maybe just a little oak. The Vajras say that the beauty of global warming is that Barbera’s high acid is being reduced. Final blend is of various different vineyards from Serralunga, Novello and Barolo.
