Georgina Hindle writes: Mocha, cocoa powder, blackcurrants and black plums on the nose with some sage and thyme. Juicy and plump, this has a nice lifeforce to it with balanced acidity and a sleek texture, just stopping short of being chewy with a vibrant feel overall. There is energy here and it's matched with high acidity and a round structure. Really persistent with lashings of liquorice, aniseed and clove underneath the bright black fruits. Nice charm, confident and playful yet with real punch and bite. Focussed and extremely well made, so approachable, easy to drink and like.  Drinking 2023 - 2028  - Decanter 92

James Suckling writes: Attractive aromas and flavors of currants and walnuts with some chocolate. Medium body, medium round tannins and a savory finish. Just starting to come around now. Drink or hold.  - James Suckling 91

Antonio Galloni writes: The 2016 Duluc de Branaire-Ducru is a soft, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the red/purplish berry fruit and floral notes retain their youthful vibrancy.  Drink 2019 - 2024.  - Vinous

This history began in 1725 when Marie Braneyre, the only daughter of the founder of Branaire-Ducru, married Pierre Du Luc, Councilor of King Louis XV. The family of Pierre Du Luc, second owner, has kept the property for two centuries. When Jean-Baptiste Braneyr acquired the estate in 1680, it was a property of excellence. Duluc is the second wine of the Château Branaire-Ducru, 4th Cru Classé since 1855, and was born in the 1990s. Composed mainly of grapes from vines under 15 years old, this wine respects the “house signature” and aimas at being as accessible as possible. Duluc is the Second Wine of the estate.

Terroir & Vinificationdu

The vineyard is located on an historical terroir, on the most beautiful gravelly ridges of the municipality of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. The balance of the parcels of each grape variety is preserved because the property, which maintains the age of its vines at 35 years, strives to renew the generations quietly, at a rate of two or three hectares per year. From Médoc above all, Duluc de Branaire-Ducru draws the deep character of its aromas in its blend: 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

At Branaire-Ducru, the requirement and the expression of a “house style” apply to both labels, Branaire-Ducru for the great wine and Duluc de Branaire-Ducru for the second wine. The grapes with the highest potential are generally found in the great wine. Others, especially those from the youngest vineyards of the estate, form the backbone of Duluc de Branaire-Ducru. In both cases the grapes come from the vineyard located in the Saint-Julien appellation. Vines are conducted in the same way and the grapes are vinified according to the same criteria. It is only after repeated tastings of all the vats and appreciation of their deep character that the final selection is decided.

Tasting

This second wine reveals itself as a true competitor to many first wines, thanks to its impressive structure and aromatic balance. A supple wine full of freshness, that can be drunk as of now.
